I am a single parent.  I have three kids, two which are away in college and one 17 year old boy that is in High School.  I work all day and NEVER HOME and when he is home, he is in his room in the dark playing xbox LIVE.  I understand it being cold outside and can understand the electric bill getting a little higher, which was ALREADY high for a 2 bedroom apartment on the 3rd floor.  We have a total of 3 windows and a patio sliding door in the apartment.  Not even 30 days in moving into this apartment I receive a bill and it is $205.  I could not BELIEVE that this bill would be so high.  I review this bill and there is a charge for a RIDER RE  that is HIGHER than what I pay for in Electric.    Mind you, I am coming from a 4 bedroom house with upstairs, basement, and garage, which my bill would be around $220 a month and I also had 2 more kids and a dog living with me.

I call the electric company, and speak with them regarding this issue and they "so called" explained this rider fee and then put me on a Budget Billing and I would pay $152 a month.  Which is still high I think for a little 960sq ft apartment.  But hey, it was better than $205 so I jumped on it.

I get my most recent bill and I get this note on it:

IMPORTANT: A quarterly review of your account indicates that your current Budget Billing amount is out of line, when compared to your past 12 month's usage. Beginning next month, your Budget Billing amount will be adjusted to $209.

So now, my set billing jumped up to $209 a month for a 2 bedroom 960sqft apartment with only me and my son reside in and hardly there because I have to work until 8pm every day, so when im home im up for a good 2 hours and then turn everything for bed.

I get online, review my bill and here is my RIDER charge being HIGHER than my cost.  What is this Rider RE.. I reviewed my parents bill who live in a 5 bedroom house whose Rider charge is LESSOR than mines.

Somebody please explain how did my usage go from 1809 kwh to 2434 kwh in 30 days???  Calling Duke is like reading your bill and trying to make sense out of it.  NO matter what... they are going to feed you some bull and then charge you.    SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME TO UNDERSTAND.  I honestly can't believe that this is for real.

exact same thing happened to me the difference is I am a union electrician so I can use evidence based procedures to prove they are wrong.

On my 800-900 square foot cottage that has no stove,no laundry machine, a very small water heater, 5 bulbs, and a 5000 btu water heater.

My bill $260 dollars

I have used a power hub and plugged each device in and calculated what each device used in a typical 24 hour period--and did this for every single piece of equipment. I also used an amp meter to check amperage on the service at various hours on various days.

Duke says i use 2400KWH a month

The truth is I used 670kwh

They are liars and theifs. The only good thing is the higher ups know they are theifs so let them rot in guilt.

I am working on a Non-Profit Group to take on Duke like they did down south tp get justice. You have to fight these big corporations. Agitate Agitate Agitate.
