Kevin and Sandy McCabe (Heartland Labradors, Heartland Havanese), located in Clare, Iowa are NOW breeding Havanese,
but they are guilty of wrong doings in the Labrador Retriever breed.

Im writing to alert you of their unscrupulous business practices.

It has been over 7 years since I entered an oral contract with the McCabes, and they have not maintained their end of the agreement.  Please be cautious, I was taken for $1000.  If you have any questions, or ideas of how I may recoup my losses please dont hesitate to contact me.  I also have every email correspondence, receipt, delivery confirmation, certified mail receipt, etc. pertaining to the case.

In February 2004, I purchased a yellow lab b***h from the McCabes for $1000.  I was on a wait list for several months, and
spoke with Kevin numerous times regarding the multi-purpose labrador my lifestyle required (obedience, hunt tests, conformation showing).  I flew from South Carolina to pick up the puppy in Clare, Iowa, in addition to  meeting Kevin and touring his kennel.  I specifically requested a contract on the day I picked up the puppy, but Kevin assured me he would take care of me if the puppy didnt turn out.  He also said a contract is only as good as the people who sign it.

In April 2005 it was obvious the b***h was not was not developing into a conformation specimen.  I sent numerous pictures every month, and discussed my concerns about the lack of pigment on her nose, thin coat and tail and legginess.  I spoke with Kevin over the phone, and he said he did not want me to show the b***h.  He explained that their Hearland kennel name was on her, and they did not want her in the ring due to her faults.  Kevin asked if I would be willing to return the b***h for a replacement puppy who would be better suited for the conformation ring.  I agreed, and the b***h was returned.  I invested thousands of dollars in the b***h due to the 4 mos. of professional field training she received.  She was ready to compete in Junior level
hunt tests and earn her Companion Dog obedience title (I have receipts for the 4 mos. of field training).

In December 2005 I received the replacement puppy.  She was extremely intelligent and trainable, and with my training, earned the first leg of her Companion Dog title at 6 mos. old.  Unfortunately, she also began showing signs of Exercise Induced Collapse at this time.  Every time she was exposed to 20 minutes of exercise (retrieving, playing with other dogs, running on the beach,
etc.) she would loose coordination in her rear end, collapse, and drag herself around by her front legs.  She was not painful or unconscious during the episodes.  It was impossible to take her swimming due to the concern she would have an episode and drown.  Her episodes were observed by two field trainers and three veterinarians.  I also had her hips radiographed, which ruled out hip problems.  Exercise induced collapse is a GENETIC disorder predominately seen in labradors (there are videos
of it on the internet).  This meant I would not be able to use her for hunting, hunt tests, conformation showing or breeding.  She was returned to the McCabes in the summer of 2006.

I have NUMEROUS emails from the McCabes.  A May 30, 2006 email states they will give me an 8 week old puppy or $300.  I elected for a puppy replacement, and was told they would contact me in the fall.  On August 14, 2007 Sandy sent me an
email saying she will refund $500.  When I write back explaining I paid $1000, raised and TRAINED 2 puppies, and will not accept $500, she replies on August 20, 2007 with:
We are now going to give you a replacement with no guarantees we are no longer offering the $500.  Contact AKC we already have...Contact the Parent club we already have that is most of the breeders that I contacted.  Do you think that
breeders havent spent thousands of dollars with dogs that didnt turn out?  This doesnt come easy.  I can give you a list when we first started of dogs that didnt turn out and we never got more than 1 dog for replacement.
I called the McCabes and sent them numerous emails and certified letters (I have all emails & certified letter
receipts) between 2007 and present.  It takes me numerous emails, letters, and phone calls in order to receive a response.  They refuse to call me, and their emails are nasty.  A December 20, 2010 email states:
...since there is no contract its not good for us or for you.  Talking with lab breeders who are still showing most are giving no guarantees.  Everyone who has shown dogs for a few years all have, dogs that are not replaced, stud services never took or replaced, semen that was never shipped.  I cant tell you the thousand of thousands of dollars we are out of and
the years with dogs that didnt turn out.
My most recent correspondence with the McCabes was earlier this week.  I kindly reminded Sandy I am still waiting for my replacement puppy, confronted her about the fact Ive been told by 6 different sources that they are no longer breeding labs, and asked her if this could be handled in a timely manner.  Her reply on August 8, 2011:
I thought I had explained this to you, you need to go and read your contract.  ....when we have another litter and that I cannot tell you when (one year, two year, three years or five) ...I will not go over the breeders, who we got a puppy from that werent replaced because of eyes, or hips second dog health issues...a few breeders stopped breeding because of one reason or another....we still have stud services own to us we will never be able to get.  THIS IS THE DOG SHOW WORLD.
I reminded Sandy I do not have a contract, and I dont think its fair to ask a buyer to wait 7, 10 or 15 years for a replacement puppy!  She replied, Im sorry you dont have any kind of contract with us.  Sandy

I am currently a third year veterinary student.  I have a 12 and 13 year old lab, both whom are in excellent health.  I put all the titles on my dogs, and they have their CD, CDX, JH, CGC, TDI.  I did sent one of my girls to a trainer for her SH.

They are super nice people prior to your purchase, but if things don't work out they get nasty. I have several emails from them demonstrating their unprofessional behavior and nastiness. Kevin also made it obvious during my initial meeting with
him in Feb. 2004 that "a contract is only as good as the people who sign it." He went on to explain that even if we signed a contract, nothing can make them follow it, thus I was just as well off to "take his word." Looking back I wish I had a contract. It would stand up better in court and the statue of limitations is twice as long as they are for a verbal contract.
I've tallied up almost $5000 in losses from the 2 labs whom I raised, trained, and sent to field trainers, not to mention
flights back and forth from SC to IA. It's an expensive mistake.

Every time I attempt to contact them it takes a min. of 1 week and several emails to get in touch with them. However, if you are prior to purchase I assume they are quick to reply to you! I have also had to email their friends, acquaintances in order to get a reply from the McCabes. When they finally reply it's the same story; they love telling me about how much money they lost in the dog show world & how many people "did them wrong." They are attempting to justify their behavior towards me. I explained to them that just because people treated them this way, it's not proper for them to treat others unethically.

It's frustrating, but at this point I'm writing it off as a loss and learning experience. I hope to help others, I would hate for anyone to go through what I've gone through.

I know they have a big name in the Havanese breed, but it's time people are made aware of the McCabes  true colors. It's an ethical and moral injustice to the labrador and havanese breed, not to mention the dog show world.

I dont  appreciate the lack of respect, morals, values, and ethics the McCabes have demonstrated.  The dog show world has a less than perfect reputation due to unethical, money hungry breeders.  My goal is to enlighten future prospective buyers so they \ont endure the same fiasco, and I will NOT stop until the McCabes have satisfied their
original agreement.

Please let me know if you have any  suggestions of how I may proceed to ensure this situation is rectified  in a timely manner.  $1000 is a lot of money to give someone, but have
nothing in return.

Thank you for your time.

Experience with Heartland

AUTHOR: Meyerc76 - ()

POSTED: Sunday, July 21, 2013

All,

i have read this report and have to tmake a moment to give some feedback to others who may read this.

first, I have a Heartland Lab, Ike was purchase from a Charlie/Winnie litter in 2002, in fact, Ike turns 11 on Saturdy july 27th.

i was put in touch with Sandy and Kevin by another local family (we live in Wisconsin, about 6 hours from Heartland.  They gave Sandy and Kevin glowing reviews and even had an experience where a puppy was moot a good fit and had training lesson assistance from the McCabes, followed by a replacement puppy when it was clear the first would do better in an adult home.  We felt very positive about the Kennelly.  Winnie, the mother of my dog, was adopted by the family that put us in touch with the McCabes.

Communication was fantastic.  The pickup of the puppy was great and the quality of the dog is phenomenal.

as I read this complaint, I couldn't help but shake my head.  This kennel seems to have gone out of the way to rectify a non-problem.

i found this report because we are considering a second Lab, with Ike getting up there in years, we felt it was time to start the process as we would like Ike to be able to be a Big Brother to a new dog and teach him or her all of the ins and outs of being part of our crazy family.

kevin and Sandy, I'm sure you don't remember me, but if you do...I want another of your labs!

Sandy McCabe of Heartland Havanese Continues to Hide Behind Lies!

AUTHOR: Anonymous - (United States of America)

POSTED: Tuesday, December 27, 2011

The McCabes continue to hide behind lies.  It's a "he said, she said" story, and there are two sides, however, I have ALL of their emails to prove they are lying!  They ASKED me to return the 1st pup bc they did NOT want her to be in the show ring!  The replacement pup was showing signs of exercise induced collapse within 6 mos. of living with me!  The McCabes are ignorant on the GENETIC disease Exercise Induced Collapse, which is a shame considering they were actively breeding labrador retrievers.  I have several NASTY emails from them which say they will return 1/2 my money (this is after they RESOLD the 1st dog who had 3 mos. of field training & was ready to compete at Junior Hunter level).  The second pup already had her 1st AKC Companion Dog Pass (several mos. of obedience training).  The McCabes "cashed in" big time on my hard work and training.

Since the word has gotten out about their unscrupulous behavior they have released a series of idle threats in an attempt to hush me.  Most recently they threatened to sue me for $500,000 if I continued to tell people about what they did to me!

Bottom line, I paid $1000 for a pup and I will not stop spreading the word about what the McCabes have done to me until I receive a replacement pup or 100% of my monies refunded.  The sooner the McCabes provide what they have promised (in numerous emails), the sooner I will stop telling everyone how they do business!

I'm still trying to figure out how Kevin McCabe and Sandy McCabe of Heartland Labradors and Heartland Havanese think I'm going to "go away & hush" after they scammed me out of $1000!?  Seriously?!  TAKE RESPONSIBILITY.

Kelly McDanial Johnson is harrasing now the dog show world

AUTHOR: Sandy - (USA)

POSTED: Friday, November 04, 2011

This women has been served by our lawyer many times and has moved and changed her address or refuses to take the letter which is is now in the hands of the court. She has slander us and has mis information.  If you read her letter that is telling we stole $1000 from her you can see we has breeders of 26 years have done everything and more than any breeder would do.

We replaced a dog that did not have any health issues, she returned the dog and we replaced the dog and offered her money back to even keep the dog.  The deal was over than she got a replacement for a d dog that should not have been replaced.  Even offering her 1/2 money back and she could keep the dog.  The second dog was never diagnois with any problem.  It wasn't until 2 years after she returned the dog that a test from the DDC that would have confurmed if the dog had this.  But no test was around and the dog was never diagnoised as having anything.  We also offered her 1/2 money back and she could keep the dog pr place it with a friend.  She shipped the dog back.

At this time she has email over 500 dog show people, no dog show people relatives.  Even a liver transplant forum ( where parents talk about their children waiting for a liver transplant)  this letter.  I have recieved everyone of them people have forward them to me.  They have asked her to not contact them again and some are on their third letter from her.  She is a vet student and has now had been in contact with about 5000 dog show people.  Unfortunately her career as a vet may be short lived.

And we sold her the first dog 7 years ago, read her letter and you can understand how she really doesn't understand to much.

If this women contacts you send me the email and then block her she loves or has nothing better to do than fight over the internet.

Don't expect to steal $1000 & get away with it!

AUTHOR: Anonymous - (United States of America)

POSTED: Tuesday, August 16, 2011
BOTTOM LINE:  I paid $1000 for a pup that Heartland Labradors, Heartland Havanese (Kevin McCabe & Sandy McCabe) promised me.

I am out $1000 & have NO PUP FROM THEM.

They use every excuse in the book of why they haven't provided a pup.  Sickness, friend's illness, etc. but they have NO problems breeding & selling Havanese left & right!

The funniest statement is "Right now we have our lawyer involved & will be taking care of this matter."  For the amount of money you are spending on a lawyer you could just provide me with a pup- as you promised.

When it comes to someone stealing money from me, I guess you can say I have "nothing else to do but go crazy"-  I don't know very many people who would pay $1000 for a dog, but then on top of that the breeder doesn't stand by their agreement.  Yep, I'm totally crazy for wanting what I paid for.

doesn't understand what she is doing

AUTHOR: Sandy - (United States of America)

POSTED: Tuesday, August 16, 2011

I am writing this letter inreference to a letter sent in about Heartland Labradors.  This women did buy a dog from and didn't like her first dog and we replaced that.  That is why happens one replace we even offered her some money back.  She has taken names off my facebook ( she is not a friend on facebook) sent this letter to everyone.  They have all sent me the letter and what they responde to.

All breeders and some pet buyers ( who I don't even know)  because she signed up for havanese forum under false pretence)  They have all said the same thing.  As a breeder McCabe's did exactly what a breeder would do and more.  The first dog should not have been replaced.  As a breeder all we can do is guarantee that a puppy when it leaves our home has no disquality faults.  But we  can not guarantee they will win in the show ring because there are to many factors involved.  We were good enought to replace the first dog even though we did not have to.  You get one replace.  We can not keep sending her dog after dog until she gets what she thinks is the perfect dog.

After she did not get any positive respond to hundreds of people she sent this email to so got even more angry.  She even went as far as sending the email to a forum I belong to "liver transplant forum"  What would that forum want to hear about a dog problem when they dying children waiting for a liver.

Right now we have our lawyer involved and will be taking care of this matter.

I am so sorry this women had nothing else in her life more depending them go crazy over a dog she bought and wasn't to her liking and the next wasn't either.
