My name is Betsy Colin and I am a dissatisfied customer.  I am highly upset.  Back in February of this year, I went to one of their offices in Tucson (Grant and Country Club) to have my taxes file.  The lady who prepared my taxes was new and very inexperienced.
The interview process took  over an hour long for a simple 1040A filing of federal and state income tax.  She had to stop several times and ask for assistance from other staff who were helping other customers.  Finally, when she finally completed my tax preparations, she showed me what my refunds would be from the fed and state.  Then she explained the fees that would be taken from my refunds.  After it was all said and done, I signed several papers and left the office.  As I
was leaving, I had a bad feeling in my guts about my experience with them.  Sure enough, a few days later I received a call from the office manager telling me that they received a letter from IRS stating that based on my name and ss#, my tax information was filed, earlier.  I immediately went down to their office to speak to the office manager and she showed me the message from IRS.  Then she proceeded to tell me that she cannot release my W2 and state to me unless I paid their fees of over $300.  I asked her what was my next option and she told me that I would have to "paper" file my taxes on my own.  I left the office so "pissed" because not only did I feel that they committed errors in preparing my taxes but the office manager was rude and short with me when I asked her questions.

Later that evening, I was able to print some 1040A forms along with the state's and filed it myself.  I mailed all the paperwork off to IRS.  Yesterday, I got a letter from AZ Dept of Revenue stating that based on their calculations, I owe them $103.00 in state taxes.  What???  According to Liberty Tax representatives, I was eligible to get a refund from the state.  I still have not received anything from IRS.
This whole thing has turned into a nightmare and I believe the fault lies with your staff who prepared my taxes.  Never in all my years have I encountered such a problem like this before when filing my taxes with other tax offices like H and R Block.  The only reason I chose to file my taxes with Liberty Tax because of the coupon I received in the mail.
I am not rich. I make well below $25,000 a year.  Yet, I'm supposed to pay them $300 in tax preparation fees for their mistakes?  After all the "leg work" I had to put in myself to try and resolve this problem on my own?

Somebody from their offices need to get to the bottom of this and figure out why I owe the state money when I was told by their office that I would be getting a refund.

I am over it

AUTHOR: Ms. B - (United States of America)

POSTED: Sunday, May 27, 2012

Update:  I finally received my IRS refund in the mail, yesterday.  Thanks, to my own hard work.  And all it cost me was my time and patience.  As for my State refund, I have someone else who is assisting me with that.

I still stand by my previous complaints about my experience with Liberty Tax and all the "drama" they've put me through.  Apparently, I am not the only dissatisfied customer they had based on the numerous complaints on this website.  Well, anyway, I've said my piece and I will put this nightmare behind me.

Although Ms. Colin's filed her own taxes, we are disappointed in Ms. Colin's decision to decline help in correcting her error.  Shoud she change her mind, our office will be happy to file an amendment on her behalf.

Lesson Learned

AUTHOR: Ms. B - (United States of America)

POSTED: Thursday, May 24, 2012

In all my 23 years of filing my taxes with H & R Block, IRS has never rejected my filing.  Nor have I heard that IRS has done this to other people because if that was the case, they would have a phone number on their website explaining what can be done about this matter and what other options to try.

In the beginning, Liberty Tax tried to suggest that I must have been a victim of identity fraud. But after further investigation on my part through the Social Security offices and my credit reports from all three credit bureaus, That was not the case.

In any case, I will "chalked" this nightmare up as a bad experience.  Was it worth the free $50?  No.  I have learned a very expensive lesson.  In the future, I will file my own taxes through TurboTax just like everyone else instead of putting my trust in places like LIberty Tax who over charge their customers for preparing their taxes on the same software you can purchase yourself at OfficeMax for less than what you are being charged.

Wake up, consumers!  Don't be a victim like, me.

Update

AUTHOR: Liberty Tax Grant Office - (United States of America)

POSTED: Thursday, May 24, 2012

It is unfortunate that Ms. Colins experience in January was not satisfactory to her.  It is never pleasant to receive a notice from the IRS that your tax return was not accepted because the IRS has already an accepted return on file for the primary SSN. It is also not unusual for the IRS to require a paper file while they work with the taxpayer to resolve the situation.

It further appears there was a miscommunication regarding payment and paper filing.  Because Liberty

Tax policy recommends that we do not release paper tax returns without payment, we offered to reduce her fee to $100.00 and complete the paper return.  She declined and left with the paperwork she had provided us.  To date, we have not received any monies from Ms. Colin for the services we did provide. Additionally, Ms. Colins received her $50 Cash Now  promotion for preparing her taxes for electronic filing which was rejected by the IRS.

We have reviewed the information in Ms. Colins file and did not find any error based on the information previously provided by her to us.  We met with Ms. Colin and reviewed her correspondence from the State of Arizona. From the information on the correspondence it appears that the return that was self-prepared by Ms. Colins was missing information.  However, she did not provide copies of her actual return.  We did recommend filing an amendment to correct. Our office would be happy to file an amendment for Ms. Colin should she decide to bring in copies of her original filings.
