On May 17, 2014, a hail storm hit Columbia, South Carolina. I knew this because of my hail tracker software that I paid for through my business. I knew the opportunity was nil for me due to the fact I am not and don't choose to be a deceiving individual. So, I talked to my brother-in-law,  Warren McGrew IV, about going to South Carolina to work.

Warren McGrew IV, owner of Sparrow Exteriors, had just had triplets. 5 kids in total and had just applied for food stamps. His wife was forced to go back to work full time at the hospital. Andrea, Warren McGrew IV, owner of Sparrow Exteriors wife, got very little to no help from Warren. I, own my own business. In the Atlanta market with little to no storm activity in the first part of the year, I had given up hope on a likely storm. I approached Warren as an opportunity to have him as the office and me as the sales manager.

One of my sales guys and I along with Warren McGrew IV, owner of Sparrow Exteriors in Woodstock, Ga., decided to make a road trip. We hopped in Warren's truck and rode from Woodstock stopping through Spartanburg then onto Greenville and then out to Columbia. Might you know this was about a 7 hour trip. 3 people in a truck, 14 hours later and listening to my brother-in-law tell the same ridiculously fabricated stories I've heard him say the same exact way for the past 7 miserable years I've known him. 

We decided, we are going to Columbia, South Carolina. That would be the first of only 2 trips that Warren McGrew IV, Sparrow Exteriors  lone employee and President in Woodstock, Towne Lake, Georgia, would make. He would do everything else through emails and telephone calls, at least so I thought.

You see, in roofing sales, the salesperson are at the mercy of the roofing company owner. Warren McGrew's system is much like his father's system at Academy Roofing. It starts off with the initial sale, but wait, let's back up and go in order:

  • 1.Find the area.   2. Knock the area.   3. Call the area  4. Flyer the area and then your stamp was on that area but you work for somebody else. It's not yours, it's the company's, even though you are offered no kinds of benefits, no draw, no vehicle just the owner's word that he is going to pay you in my case 60/40 split.
  • Once you start signing people up, that is just the beginning. There is no "written in stone", that you've got the job. If a neighbor has a bad experience with the company, gets their deductible paid by somebody else, just decides to go with someone else and just never returns your phone call, any of these things could lead to a dead contract. So you sign them up and WAIT for them to call you back about the insurance company.
  • Then 3rd trip, you meet with their adjuster and if they are nice enough to engage you in the meeting and don't think they can do it without you, then it won't be your last, not nearly. The roof gets denied? You are coming back for a 2nd adjustment (4th trip) -or- roof gets totaled and you move it to production.

This is when it becomes the Roofing Company Owner's job, and the ball is in his court. Now, me being a seasoned roofing salesperson, knowing that my brother-in-law has a job taking care of his kids and making phone calls, I go to depend on him, oops. Mr. McGrew  found it necessary to keep Sparrow going full speed ahead locally and let me work out of state.

Normally, that wouldn't be a problem. But, when you have a deal with the roofing company owner and you go as far as you can go and it is up to the owner to do his job and he screws every facet up about it. We've got a problem.

Now, over the years, Warren has had about 4 people work for him. All of them have been somewhat of disasters. Joel, one guy in his 40's, slept on Warren's couch for months and finally quit because he couldn't make it anymore. Warren's excuse? He was lazy. Another guy Warren claims stole $20,000 from him by having the customer sign the check over to him. What happened there? Warren claims a guy that was nearly destitute after selling 6 cedar roofs (the grand-slam in roofing) was paid in full, cashed out. I never could figure out why a guy that was trying to get married, lost his car, was evicted from his apartment and lived in Gwinnett would travel all the way to Marietta Country Club, 60+ miles away in a friend's car to pick up a check he was owed no money on, when Warren McGrew IV, owner of Sparrow Exteriors lived 15 miles North and could've picked it up and deposited no questions asked. 1 word: Lazy or liar.

Back to South Carolina, good old Columbia. Warren actually sent his web designer up there and he knew that place stunk and that working for a man with a purple company and a slogan that says, "trust your nest to the very best", is sort of questionable. Nothing against gay people, because Sparrow Exteriors makes homosexuality a favor of God,  but his company spews gayness. He was gone by the end of the weekend. The other 2 guys left as well and it was me, the brother-in-law, the only one left to help him feed his food stamp children. Admittedly, after finding out Warren had put his family on the WIC program through my mother-in-law, I was a bit uneasy about continuing to work for a man that could not feed his own family. That's why the other 2 guys left. I could not hold something back from them like that. It showed obvious signs of neglect.

We are in July now, I'm done selling for Warren. I have lost confidence in him already. I had not made any money in 2 months except for his 7% draw. Let me explain to you how this beautiful little figure works.

You come in to start selling. You are not paid a dime until your first roof is totaled and the first check is released. The first check comes through and it is let's say an easy number and a fairly common one, $4,000. The total job cost is $10,000. The roofing company (Warren McGrew IV, owner, Sparrow Exteriors) is responsible for gathering the figures and getting them over to the insurance company, ordering the materials and dumpster and releasing depreciation and supplement. If any one of those don't get done, your payment doesn't come through.

Back to the 7%. 7% of $4,000 is $280. Get ready, this is what I will get paid on every roof. You see, the roof is a $10,000 job that he is supposed to supplement. Remember the 60/40 split, he makes 60, I make 40? You can't pay a guy what you don't close out. His idea? The owner does the roofs and never call the customers. Especially considering he's got a salesperson that refuses to sell anymore because he has seen Warren won't do what he's supposed to do. The salesperson finally gives up and goes away and the roofing company owner proceeds to make his full 96% profit for literally doing, nothing.

Some might say that I have gone just a little overboard. I really don't care. My family has been broken apart by this guy. He has caused strife and financial turmoil in other's families. His manipulation with his wife and  of course having 5 of the 7 grandkids and Warren being married to the oldest in her family, (((REDACTED))) are the obvious choice. Mother in law constantly taking care of the kids while Warren sits at his home at (((REDACTED))). I do this because he even has a deceptive address on whitepages.com for angry customers and salespeople he's pissed off.

Let's go through the customers now. The one's that actually stayed because most who as I explained before vacated because of all the mess in the process.

1.Carolyn Price- Signed her up, got roof totaled. Sweet lady, she was on a breathing apparatus and was terrified at me at first. Being in that hideous purple shirt, I would've been to. She allowed me to do the roof but not after 12 meetings and 42 phone calls, these are no exaggeration. Carolyn was very concerned about us doing the work, as she should've been. To this day, Warren never worked 1 minute or should I say gotten $1 out of the insurance company over what they initially agreed. Usually Warren get's about a 40-60% increase. This one zero. She knew the situation with me and Warren McGrew, owner of Sparrow Exteriors in Woodstock, Ga. She knew about his no desire to pay me. So she wrote a check out to Sparrow Exteriors and Preston Carter. I never signed it and gave it to him, in which he never paid me a dime off of the 8 hours it took to get that check, it was cashed. Now he says that he did not forge that check. Either it was a bank error or Warren McGrew found some way of signing the back of that check Preston Carter and just ran it on through. I wouldn't put it past a guy that would put his children and his wife but drive $60,000-$80,000 in vehicles, on  W.I.C. Food stamps. To this day 7 months after signing her up, I've made a total of $286 on her.  $23/meeting, $6.82/phone call. Truly, there should have been about $4,000+/- in commission. Not when the roofing company owner drops the ball.

2. George Geriner-  This gentleman is 80, a veteran of 4 wars. Fought in the Air Force for 34 years. He is an outstanding man. Warren just screws it all up. Materials not delivered on schedule, dumpster left on site 7 days after the job was complete while homeowner with bad knees has to get up and down his driveway. He calls the office, not thinking to call me. The office (Warren's answering service that he pays $75 month for), gives the message to Warren by email and Warren ignores it. How does he ignore it? By sending an 80 year old man an email. Let's be honest here, a senior citizen, most likely, does not accept email as a form of communication. Warren McGrew IV on the other hand accepts this as his ONLY form of communication. You could write him but he doesn't get up to the UPS Store to check his mailbox but maybe once a week, more if he knows he's got money coming. If you decide to ONLY email a senior citizen after you've received a call? That means you are being a downright coward or a Warren McGrew. Last but not least, Warren refuses to work on the claim. Mr. Geriner's insurance company called him 16 times in 2 months. He says they never call, just like he tells me he's got a meeting but his truck never leaves his driveway. He is a compulsive, pathological liar who you have to question his very name. He will quote bible scripture at you all day long though, just like his father. His motto is: Talk the talk, and let somebody else do the walking. Again made  $289 on a deal that was supposed to bring about $4,000. Not to mention this is the 1st of several liens on properties from this guy not paying his bills. Warren likes profit margins and when you don't work on claims, don't pay suppliers and don't pay your salespeople; you retain one hell of a profit margin.

3. George Poulan- George was a difficult man from moment one. He was a hard man that had a dying relative. He had a 2 year old roof that was barely touched by a bad storm. I was able to get it passed, along with doors, screens, sheds, fascia, gutters. It was a homerun, for Warren. Mr. Poulan on the other hand was delayed 2 weeks getting roof on, had 3 tons of debris  sitting in his driveway days after his roof was complete forcing him and his wife to park their cars on a busy street. His gutter guy would never show up to do the gutters so we used my gutter guy, Rick, who refuses to ever do work for Warren again, a week later after upon taking a check after discussion with Warren, they'd be done within 48 hours. Warren's only prerogative  is to get the money and legally meander his way around and do whatever he wants to do on his own contractual terms. This is a guy who gets his mail out of a UPS Store, has fictitious offices in other states  and operates out his Master Bedroom and calls himself, "WE", "The Company" etc. He clearly has so much pride he can't see the forest through the trees. By the way, Mr. Poulan is also another fine recipient of a future lien notice. Mr. McGrew hasn't paid his roofing supply bill because he is using it as "leverage" or collecting profit on the front end, so I will go away and he can work on it a year later. Long after the salesperson is gone. Mr. Poulan signed up in June, got his roof done in July and still has no word from the insurance company from any supplements ever being approved. Why? Neglect.

4. Deborah Henning- Deborah was my favorite. She is 58. She is a sweetheart. She has a younger husband who hated me, mainly because of the purple shirts. After she met Warren on his 2nd and last trip to South Carolina, she wanted to back out. She did not feel right about him, I wouldn't have either. I talked her into staying with Sparrow Exteriors, long story short, she paid $3850 to get the work started and it never got done. What happened? Warren, will blame it on everything, weather, shingle color, roofing crews, material suppliers, lack of dumpster companies, a solar eclipse (joke).  Fact is he promised her a refund and 60 days later she hasn't even gotten a phone call. Yes, Sparrow Exteriors ripped off a senior citizen. As a compulsive, pathological liar that's what they do, they make sense out of their beliefs and state it so many times until they finally believe it. Let him talk to you about his drinking days, how he used to drink vodka straight but now he drinks his wife's Texas frozen Orange margarita and his cheeks get all rosy and he starts to slur his words.

5. Jamison Price- Wow. What a disaster. Such a sweet lady and Warren just DESTROYED such an easy opportunity. Jamison has 4 kids is  a hardworking mom with a hardworking long hour working husband.  Warren orders 700sf, 7 square, 21 bundles of shingles too many on a house that only needed 63 bundles. Yes, he ordered 1/3 too many shingles. Why? Well in a roofing company, cost get confused and bogged down. A roofing companies mistake can easily be a benefit. You order way too many shingles, profit goes WAY down, the return never gets credited to the salesperson, a dollar uncredited is a dollar earned. But then again when you have no desire to pay a salesperson anyway, this might've been a just a mistake, I know he susceptible.  So, 3 months, 7SQ of shingles, a 12'x24'x6' dumpster sits in their single car driveway in front of their only garage. The holdup? Warren couldn't get his siding crew and coordinate his siding to come in at the same time. He said that builder grade siding had to be special ordered for a customer that has Allstate and has no matching policy. At the end of the day, it was the customer's fault. They didn't call him enough, but truthfully and you can ask Joseph, they'd given up. I'd given up on telling them when it was going to get installed. It was an act of God for it to fall in place. I just can't get over this one, a dumpster sitting in your driveway for three months, the only reason it got moved is because in August I went up there and threatened the dumpster company that it would be taken and they would lose a can if they didn't get it. Warren says he made the calls, just like he said he called the insurance companies to supplement the claims so we could get them closed out and move on with our lives.

6.Rebecca Lee: Sweet lady, actually prayed with her a few times. Amazing black woman. Again, Warren murders my reputation and "the companies". See, in some company's world a guy that pays his bills on time, pays his contractors on time, his salespeople on time, you have a pretty smooth running machine. But if one or all of those is plundered. It's quite a wrench in the wheel. Rebecca was very patient and had been approached by over 100 salespeople. She'd heard it all. Weeks to get the roof on, months to get the siding on, parts of her siding ripped off for weeks to get a color match, 4sq material left in her front yard for months. Salesman, you say? If you're not going to work for me I am d**n sure not working for you. That was the first time back in over a month.

7.  Mrs. Lee- Next door neighbor to Mrs. Young and also her cousin, same story, different customer except the dumpster company dug up a foot of her yard trying to get the dumpster out.

There were 21 in total. People that were willing to work with Sparrow. Roofs not going on, dumpsters sitting in driveways for months, siding falling off of houses (Yari Daiquang) and installed improperly. An excuse to back up every. single. incident..  

5. Warren's father, Warren McGrew III, who solely owned Academy Roofing, Inc., who solely performed over 10,000 roofs in a year. Warren Sr., did a great job of training his eldest on how to deceive customers, salespeople, and even his vendors, and the deception has carried over. Now Mr. McGrew Sr. who claims to have done $70 million in 2008, works as a lowly roofing salesman for his 2nd son, Stephen McGrew, who seems to be an honest guy.  I don't hate this guy, Warren McGrew IV. He is a prideful, when he's got no reason to be and he is dangerous because of his laziness. But, I don't hate him.

Warren is the father on my only nieces and nephew. They are one of the reasons I went to go to work for him. I had no confidence in Warren. I'd worked for him at Academy and he is lazier now than he was when his Dad was blowing $250k on his worthless services. I love my nieces and nephews and only wanted the best for them, and I figured that if I could sell, he could supplement and we could help each other out. You see how that works out.

I am posting this for 2 reasons. My customers and future salespeople that work with/for Warren McGrew. I doubt if I will ever see another dime from Warren Ray McGrew IV of (((REDACTED))), no salesperson should be a victim to this guy. Don't believe his lies, he has been saying these stories over and over in the same tone for years. There is no telling what he has actually done, just speculation. I speculate that he's only worked for his father. He has no formal education. He reads a lot. plays more video games than your 12 year-old son and he is a good writer and a good story-teller. Go figure.  Customers, if he has the ability to treat his family this way, put his family on WIC while she drives a new Odyssey $40k minivan and let his brother in law work out of state for less than minimum wage with no guilt. imagine what he would do to you.
