My Accounts Payable (AP) department contacted me to inquire about a bill they received from a company calling themselves UST.  I did some research and found Rip Off Reports having an extensive history already documented.

So, I thought we would throw our two-cents into the discussion.  Pretty much everything being said about these guys is right on target.  However, I was able to get one of them on the phone.  Describing the conversation as vague and or ambiguous is under reporting it.

You get the feeling right off the bat that these guys are used car salesman.  The representative was reading it all off a screen.  Furthermore, you could tell it was one of those dingy call-centers.  You can hear all the laughing and loud talking in the back ground.

The representative would only tell me that the invoice was a Maintenance Agreement for my T1 lines and all phone equipment.  When I indicated that I have a $50,000 phone system and their number seems extremely low the rep. only kept repeating they will cover that.

I asked if I could have some references and he referred me to their website.  The guy was very nice but it was clear he was reading off a screen and had no real information.

My advice:  Stay away from these guys and report them to your State's AG office, I did.

Thanks for the response.  I was able to call them back to get a supervisor and this person was even slicker (if that's possible).  Right off the bat the representative points out specifically where on the invoice it clearly states this is only an attempt to sell a service.  Not that anything is "owed".

When I point out to him how deceptive it is coming in the form of an invoice and that it is clear this was attempt to extort money from a business without demonstrating anything of value he clammed up on me.

On one hand it's slick.   I could imaging that for every 100 of these bogus invoices sent out that at least 3-5 are paid not even knowing what it is for.  Now the detractors would say "well your Accounts Payable (AP) department should catch this" explaining that it's marketing and business's  should wise up.

I agree that a good AP department would catch something like this but what ever happened to integrity, honesty or just honor?

My final comment to this representative at UST was that I hope that none of his family members or friends get hosed by some deceptive ploy down the road.  That one of these days someone or group is going to scam one of his family members out of a sum of money and he is going to know what it feels like to to get scammed.

My employer, a church, received the SAME scam. The check for payment was written and about to be sent before I intercepted. As it turns out we are in the midst of changing telecom providers so I wonder if this contributed to their attempt to scam us
