My husband and I were engaged and had started talking about having a baby together.  We knew it wouldnt be able to happen the natural way and that we were going to have to seek the professional help of an IVF specialist because my tubes were tied.  We decided that if we were going to do it that we were going to do it the month we got married.

We researched several locations and decided on ARMS - Arizona Reproductive Medicine specialists, only because they had a location closer to our home and we knew we would have to make several trips.  We went to our consultation on April 3, 2012 that cost $280.00 that would be applied to our account if we decided to go with their process.  I asked them many questions about my concerns about weather I would be able to conceive or not with my tubes being tied and already having had a tummy tuck, and my age.  Though I had no reason to believe that I would not be able to conceive because I have 3 beautiful children at home from a previous marriage.

After the meeting and exam Dr Johnson had no reason to believe that there would be any reason for concern or worry that it wasnt possible, but of course tests would have to be run, and he said the only thing against you really is your age of (37).

After all testing was completed Dr Moffit, and Dr Johnson believed there should be no issues with all the testing and examinations that were performed on blood work, ultrasounds of uterus & ovaries, mock ultrasounds, checking for pullyps, scar tissue or any problem with lining or that would cause concern for implantation, everything that needed to be looked at including, but not limited to Sperm analysis, and myself, that as long as they got 5+ follicles that we should be able to conceive.  So therefore after already spending $1760 on office visits, $656.13 on lab work, totalling($2,416.13) to see if My husband and I were good positive candidates for IVF, they said yes you are great candidates for this.  Apparently everone is a great candidate to be SCAMMED!!!!Now comes the expensive part!

All the excitement we were feeling and ready to move forward with the process, thinking and preparing that in approxamately 30 -45 days we were going to be implanted with an embryo, a baby to call ours.  We pushed forward and used every cent of our savings, and every bit of my credit cards to fund this IVF process that had to be paid for before anything else was to begin.

We had our appointment with the paperwork guru, Shayna, went through all the legalities, and even had some difficult decisions to make, and she briefly commented on a program that if we were not able to conceive would give us half our money back, however it was $24,180 vs $18,000 and being we had no reason to think there was any problem with us having a high success because of the professional testing and words of our Doctors, Dr. Johnson and Dr. Moffit, and we didn't have the extra monies to give to that program, didn't opt for that option.

Now the cost of medications comes in and spending $3,120.83 on hormones and injections, and sticking yourself several times, and appointments, and measuring and counting follicles, and being sure everything was done correctly and at the exact times, and still so excited knowing that after all this is going to be a beautiful baby. Counting all the follicles, mine 12 to be exact, that were growing together, there were a few more that popped up, but couldn't be used or counted because they were not at the same maturity or growth level that the other 12 were.

We were so hopeful and happy and excited that this was really happening, and my body is starting to feel like it was supposed to.  Now preparing for egg retrieval day was exciting, and scary to be put under, but always thinking and focusing on the end result.  A beautiful healthy baby!

On retrieval day, I wake up from anesthesia and they state there was only 9 eggs, now I am confused and frustrated, but than it gets worse they mix them with the sperm and only 7 are mature and only 5 fertilize. Now they schedule Transfer on day three, than when comes day 3 they are scheduled to Implant my embryo.  We get a call from office staff, and only 3 are left and not ready to Transfer. They have no idea why they are not ready to transfer, "just not".  Now we have to wait untill day 5, Now we are upset and terrified.  Day 5 comes and we get a phone call in the morning from office staff stating, "sorry, nothing to transfer, you need to contact the nurse and see what to do, but I'm sure you need to stop taking the medications now."  No answers, No compassion!   No remorse, complete disrespect and disregard for the fact that we spent thousands of dollars and now have NOTHING to show for it!  Now I am supposed to receive a refund for services not rendered, such as the transfer, ultrasound, the freezing of embryos, the storage, etc, and I have left probably 100 messages of which NOT one has been returned, and I wait on hold for hours until I get to physically talk to people, specifically KAT in billing and Tracy, the next step, and they say they will return calls, or look into it, but they dont.  I was supposed to receive my refund mid July, and now here it is September 17th, 2012.  Once they have your money they do not care one more bit about you or weather you received the services you paid for. Nor do they press getting you the money back you are entitled to.

I would not ever recommend them.  They need to be shut down so people stop getting Scammed and taken advantage of.  They should never be able to have their doors open nor be able to work in any facility in the USA!!! I am not the first to have been ripped off by them, and until they are shut down I am sure I wont be the last.  I want all my money back and more for the unjust emotional deress, the disrespectfulness of the staff and being lied to by a medical professional from the start.  They obviously do not have the medical knowledge to tell people information to make rational, and very expensive, and important decisions that effect many peoples lives.  This isn't some $100 rip off, this is thousands of dollars, financial and emotional distress, and hardship they are causing!!!!

Do not use any Arizona Reproductive Medicine Specialist facility or the Dr's Mark Johnson and Barbara Moffitt, they have horrible knowledge and bedside manner, and the staff they have chosen for their facility is disrespectful and have ZERO compassion.

Rebuttal to ARMS

AUTHOR: TMB - (United States of America)

POSTED: Thursday, October 04, 2012

Linda McCaskill, Exec. Director, ARMS,

I understand that it is now your job there at ARMS to be the one to send this Generic response, however, I believe you are New to the facility, and were not even the Exec. Director when I was a patient there.  As a matter fact the facility was going through several staff changes when we went in to Dr. Johnson's office for our follow up, to complain to him about how we were treated on the very day we were told there was not going to be a transfer. We asked what happened and what went wrong.  You had not even started your first day yet.

I thank you for your apology, but it doesn't change what went on at this facility or the fact that still months later we have no answers, and are still empty handed with no pregnancy.

Though I appreciate you respecting my medical privacy, because you are required to by law, there was nothing out of the ordinary to cause concern, and According to the experience and expertice of the Doctors there, and the thousands of dollars in pre treatment testing that we went through there was nothing in my or my husband's personal information or health history that showed any concern or reason for this outcome.  As a matter fact at our follow up meeting, Dr. Johnson even suggested we just pay to have the tubes untied and let it all happen naturally.  When during our first consultation I told him my OB/GYN told me they would not be able to be reversed and if I was going to want to have children in the future it was going to have to be IVF.

I have that phone number you gave, and have left about 25 messages on the voicemail with no return calls.  I finally had to start being transferred from the billing department out of state to your local phoenix office, in order to get someone to talk to me, and they continued to tell me things were being looked into and we will take care of it, and call you back the next day.  This happened over and over and over. With no returned calls.  I have had to wait on hold for hours to talk to someone and still heard the same thing over and over.

Now here it is 4 months later and your facility billing specialist that has been dealing with this is no longer there, and I had to start over with a new one. She is now telling me only $1980 is what is being returned for the Embryo transfer, storage, embryo freezing, etc.  The second part of the process. How can that be? Guess it just shows how much this process really only should have cost about $4,000 not $18,000.  Also, the fact we were told that the refund would take 2-4 weeks to be processed and received and here it is 4 months later to receive a $1980 check, after months of waiting and hours on hold, and people just giving us the run around.

I would love to talk with you, and see how you are planning to fix this.  We are so upset about this experience, if your facility was going to give us a second try for free, I would not trust any of your staff to handle any of this delicate, very special process that you failed to care for the first time.  My husband and I were treated unfairly, unkindly and unprofessionally the first time around, and now I can imagine how we would be treated walking in to your facility again.

Thank you

TMB
