I am (was) purchasing a used 1995 Saturn from Bastrop Auto Exchange in Bastrop, Texas. When we signed the contract the owner told us that if we ever needed repairs, that we should come to him because he also runs a Goodyear auto shop on the lot. He said he would be glad to work with us on the finances of any such repairs. This was in October of 1999. On December 15th, 2000, my car starts knocking. My husband said it was the rods. Not wanted to destroy my motor if it could have been avoided, I called Jack Nelson, Sr., the owner of Bastrop Auto Exchange, and explained the situation to him. He said to have the car towed to him and he would have his shop repair the vehicle and he would refinance the car, adding the cost of repairs. I immediately had the car towed to the lot and waited for 2 weeks while they replaced the motor and the clutch and repaired the motor fan. The total cost of the repairs was $1633. They told us to come and sign the new contract. When we arrived at the dealership, I greeted everyone and we proceeded to Jack's office. He stated that our payments would now be $300 for 33 months. When I brought the car in, my payments were $285 and I only had 18 payments left. I was ready to sign the contract anyway, just to have my car back. I asked Jack to explain the total costs involved and he said to come back tomorrow and we would discuss the contract in depth. I said Okay, can I get the keys for the car? He said I could not have my car. I asked him why not and he said that I was being difficult and asking to many questions. He stated again that I could not have the car and that the more he thought about it, he did not "feel like" refinancing my car. My husband stated, "Even though you know how bad she needs the car?" (We have 4 children and live in a rural community.) He stood up and told my husband, "Oh you wanna get in on this?" Needless to say, my husband would have loved to have punched him, but we swallowed our pride and did not erupt into violence. Jack came around his desk and said to me, "Get out of my way!" I followed him to the next office and was still trying to get a grasp of the situtation. Meanwhile everyone in the establishment had stopped what they were doing and were witnessing the whole incident. Jack asked me if I ever shut up and that the more that I talk, the less he wanted to sell me my car. Another salesman, Devan Adams, who had witnessed this, asked me to come back tomorrow and they would see if something could be worked out. The next day I called back and asked Devan if could come and sign the contract and get my car. He said I could if I brought them another $800 down payment. I explained to him that this was not the agreement that was made prior to my bringing the car to them for repairs. I told him that I had already paid on $800 down payment and had paid over $3000 in payments on the car. He ignored this and stated that I could only have my car if I brought them $800. I asked him if his boss always blew up at customers like that and he said, "Mam don't start." I hung up the phone. I called the BBB and had them send me a paper to file a report and I found out that the person who would handle the complaints for Bastrop Auto Exchange and would find a solution for such complaints is none other than Devan Adams. How is he gonna resolve a complaint against the man who signs his paycheck?! I now have no transportation and live in area where the closest grocery store is 20 miles away. We just purchased a new home and still haven't recovered from being Santa, so needless to say we have no money to put down on another vehicle. I have never been so disrespected as a customer in my life! I hope Jack Nelson, Sr. can sleep at night. No. I take that back. I hope he can't sleep at night, just like I can't for worrying how to cope with this. I wish I had let my husband punch him that night, just to have had a little compensation. I should have run the car into a tree after it started knocking just so that the insurance would have paid for it.
