My wife recently made a purchase, online. The invoice, that came in the box, showed the cost of the merchandise, the shipping and handling cost, and the taxes. When my wife checked her bank account, they had taken out too much money for the order. I emailed the company, asking why there was a difference. This is their response:

"I have researched your order and found that if you include the extended zip code on your address when placing an order it will allow us to be more precise with the tax rate in your area.
The extended zip code should have an additional 4 digits and if this is included on future orders we should be able to avoid this from happening again. I want to refund you for this tax difference."

We have placed many, many, online orders, with this, and other, companies. This is the first time that adding the extended zip code was an issue. (FYI: the S&H charges did not reflect what we were charged either).
Even though the extra cost was minimal, multiply it by all the customers, those that do not address this (stating that it is such a small amount), it can amount to a large sum of money for this company. How many others have had this issue?

- You are talking about Sales Tax.  This is not money the company gets to keep, it goes to the State.  So unless you are going to claim that they somehow are keeping this money that they identify as Sales Tax then I suggest you immediately contact the Agency in your state that handles Sales Tax and report them.

Sales Tax is a very complicated issue when you are talking about trying to figure out the Sales Tax for every single area in the US.  It is possible that your zip code extends over two different Sales Tax rates.  If that is the case either this tax is new(perhaps it started 1/1/2012?) or the other companies are just ignoring this tax difference.
