I signed a moving contract with Budget Van Lines, was never told, by the sales associate, during the process that they would sub out the move to another company. Initially, I had know problem with that. I was assured by Ben Ilan, that Southern Movers would handle my move with complete professionalism. I set up a delivery date for 1/8/08 with Southern and was told that they needed to schedule for Sat. the 12th and was also told that I'd be contacted with the final invoice amount. I had to hound Southern every day for a week to receive my moving quote. On Saturday, I hadn't heard from Southern, called them again, and was told that they had a schedule problem and would deliver Monday(14th) in the afternoon. On Monday, still no contact from Southern, call them yet again. The move has been pushed back to Tuesday, the 15th. At this point I call Budget, and leave several messages before I'm contacted by Melissa from Dispach/Customer service. I'm told they'll look into it and contact within the next few minutes. I never hear back from Anyone again until I call people on Tuesday. I contact Southern, who tells me that they can't get in touch with their drivers and think they're sleeping(10:30am) and will conact me shortly. I immediately contact Budget, they tell me that while my property was in Southerns posession, Southern went bankrupt and was bought out...that they don't know who to get in touch with. I'm then contacted by Transamazon movers, who tell me that they are picking up my property from Southern, and will "100%" deliver my proptery on Wed. The driver is in ATL getting my stuff. I was never contacted by Southern again, they never told me that they were subbing the move to someone else. After the call with Trans, I contacted Budget, to inform Them of the changes. They had know clue, but assured me that they get to the bottom of it and call me back with a delivery time. Guess what, I didn't hear from them. Recognize a pattern of behavior here.... I called Budget Wed. morning and they had know answers and would call me back. Nope. I did hear from Trans, telling me that they were "doing me a favor" and going to pick up my property Today. What?!!!! I was told it would be picked up on Tues. now I'm told on Wed. that it'll be picked up on Wed?!!! I then made several calls again to Budget which were not returned. Trans called around 4pm, after my wife starting calling people...turns out that Trans would deliver my property at 10pm and that my rate had increased! Go figure, They take my furniture, can't locate companies, people, furniture, etc. Can't deliver, can't honor Their quote. You can get your furniture, Only for More Money!!!!!!

Glad You Have Your Items Back....But

The District Attorney will not be able to do anything as state DA's do not have jurisdiction over moving companies performing interstate moves - if the move was within your state, then yes - you might have a case. But there is something else you should know:

Budget is a broker and the broker's responsibility for the move ENDS as soon as the movers arrive - their responsibility is to FIND a mover, and that is what you paid them for - not for the actual move itself. What they then do is bid your move out to some mover so bad, that they couldn't exist without the broker or the internet. Legally, that is their responsibility and anything outside of that responsibility would not stand up in a court.

I would lodge complaints with the BBB - just for the additional complaint they'll have; that additional complaint might dissuade someone else from using them. I would also lodge a complaint with the Federal Department of Transportation, or the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FDOT and FMCSA respectively) as they have jurisdiction over interstate moves. Don't expect much action from them though in the short-term, as they are hugely understaffed.

BTW - I don't know how long you had to wait without your stuff, but many have waited as long as 30 days past the promised delivery date to receive their items. It doesn't sound like you did - not saying you were lucky; no one is using a scam mover. I'm just saying it could be worse. File your claims for damages (assuming there are any) and best of luck to you.

Property arrived-Finally

AUTHOR: Jwm - (U.S.A.)

My furniture finally arrived, after I inconvenience the moving company to deliver @ 11pm. Was told 3 guys would show, unload, and set up. 2 guys and I had to rangle them into assembling my furniture. Was also told we'd be contacted prior to arrival, were not. Was told by supervisior that he'd be available for calls "all night long", wasn't. Straight to voice mail at 9pm.

Driver contacted my wife @ 1030 to say they'd be arriving in 20 mins, then dispatch called and made it an hour, citing traffic as an excuse. Traffic doesn't happen around here at 1030. Driver then harrassed my wife on the phone, making the comment "you are inconveniencing us with this late delivery". Then the company lost the screws and assembly instructions to my daughters crib. I was also charged MORE money upon delivery. I've complained to budget. They don't care, they feel that they are absolved of any responsiblility. Don't use Budget. My next step will be contacting the State DA.
