We pulled into an Exxon station on 2nd avenue between 1st and 2nd streets in Manhattan to fill up with premium gas. The price above the pump for premium was $1.59. The attendant came out, took my credit card, and pumped the gas. I had a partial view of the digital read out on the pump and I saw what looked like $1.89 as the cost per gallon. Somewhat suspicious but in a rush to get home I signed the receipt without thinking to check what I paid. I was stunned to see that it cost me thirty dollars to fill my tank which wasn't even close to empty; an amount I hadn't seen in several months. I was more shocked to discover that I had been charged $2.00 a gallon. I drove right back to the gas station to compare the price on the receipt with the price above the pump. Sure enough the price for premium gas was $1.59 per gallon but only on my side of the pump. The other side of the same pump read $1.99. There was a lesser grade gas for $1.89. I went immediately to the manager who said that the prices which were on the pump were only for self-service between the hours of four and five. When I pointed out that it was now 8:30 p.m. and the prices were still on the pump he shrugged, smirked, and said "I guess someone forgot to change it".

As if this were not egregious enough I also suspect that I was given the lesser grade gas while paying for the premium. My suspicion is not only based upon the $1.89 that I originally saw on the digital readout as the attendant was pumping the gas but on that same attendant's response when I drove back into the station. He became flustered when he saw us and began blurting out "What kind of gas did you want? I gave you regular, that's what it says right?" I payed him no mind since my beef was with the discrepancy in price. It now however raises concerns that what you pay for here is not necessarily what gets put in your tank.

Thank you in advance for your time and attention. Please feel free to contact me as this matter is very unsettling and I would like to see it pursued further.
