Scams are everywhere! Everybody's new year motto should be "Consumer beware!"....

Scams come in many forms. Here is one that landed in my mail box:

I received an authentic looking corporate paper check in the mail made out to me, with a check number, date, bank name, payer and payee name, bank routing number, endorsement line (on the back) and signature for the amount of $4,700 USD. I receive many checks, and this one looks no different from any.

It was from Winston Incorporated, drawn on Newbridge Bank, 38 W. First Ave. Lexington, NC bank.

The letter that came with it states:

"We are pleased to inform you that you are one of the lucky winners of Shoppers Lottery held on Oct 20th, 2008... (blah, blah, blah) ... You are therefore entitled to the sum of $120,000 USD... (blah, blah, blah) ... Please note that all the participants were selected through random computer ballot .... from selected stores in North America like Wal-Mart, Sears, K-Mart, etc. ... (blah, blah, blah) ...

... (blah, blah, blah) ...

... the enclosed check is to pay the applicable Government/bond fees of $2,980 USD. To expedite the processing and release of your funds, you must contact your claim agent immediately at the number indicated below.

Please do NOT attempt to use this check until you call your claim agent for proper directions. The bond fees are payable at any Western Union or Money Gram ... (blah, blah, blah) ... We will give you the necessary information you need

... (blah, blah, blah) ...

Your second check will be $115,300 USD.
