Hello
I went on medical leave of absence=(MLOA)on 2/20/05 and was enrolled at the time at AIUONLINE. The beginning of my leave of absence was during a break between quarters and was to be until 10/05. The college received additional funds from my student loans and kept the funds even though they knew I was on MLOA. They stated I did not notify them so they kept the funds I was too late for them to be returned. But they did have the documentation I was on a Medical LOA. I was charged for classes I did not attend. This total amount is $4417.00 and I have been on SSI now and Disability they knew this at the time of the withdrawal that I was very ill.
I had hoped to return to my classes and continue my edcuation. But in the June of 2005 I was withdrawn by AIU on no longer was a student. My medical leave was until Oct. 2005. To bad this has happen to me I am hoping this will not happen to anyone else.

I am very sorry to hear that this is happening to you. I had the unfortunate experience of taking this job as my first post-college career move. One that taught me a lot about the sad realities of the kind of businesses there are in this world. I say business because AIU is FIRST a business and at a very distant second it is a school. I have a suggestion; I worked at aiu for 8 LONG months and this is my best advice. Look up SACS.ORG on the internet. That is the insituation which provides AIU with accredidation and the only thing that poses a threat to this money sucking conglamerate. Tell them your sitation and ask for advice and better yet if they have anyone that would help you through this mess. AIU is as dishonest as they get. Every word that comes to you form an
"adviser" is scripted and fed to them by their managers and NOTHING is in the best interest of the student. They are trained to make you feel bad for not attending there school and in reality it's about the worst school that you could go to. It's a useless degree about to become even more useless when the accredidation gets taken away next year. STAY AWAY FROM AIU. I hope you get you money back and I'm very sorry.

What has happened is blatantly illegal under the Americans With Disabiity Act. I would draft a letter, including all documentation, state your case and send it to the president and all deans. I would also state that you have a second appointment with your attorney on December 20 to decide which option you chose to persue. Request a written response and do not take any phone calls. This should clear things up quickly if that is your goal. You could easily find an attorney who would gladly litigate for a percentage. Best wishes.
