I have a contract with World Gym that I thought expired two years from my sign up date, which was in January 2004. I was under the impression that after the contract expired I would have fulfilled my obligations to World Gym.

However, because I was not paying attention to my credit card charges, I later found that I was getting charged still, though my two year membership expired. My contract didn't say anything about automatic renewal, but that's what they did, and in my opinion they did it illegally.

Feeling hopeless, and not knowing what to do, I thought I would try to stick out the second round of "forced" illegal membership. The times that I tried to speak to someone by phone at World Gym. I was told that this person wasn't available. My not following up cause me to just try and deal with it by forcing myself to go. But, like times before my schedule made it impossible for me to workout.

So, I was trying to wait out this second round and cancel right before they renewal my contract again. But, enough is enough!!! I got wise and did a Google search with the information provided on my credit card statment. Came up with the web address for ASF International.

The website's home page was just info about making payments and a section where one could log in using their World Gym account number. After I logged in I was shocked to see that I'm signed up as a member of World Gym until December 31, 2039.

I understand this is what happens when your passive and don't actively pay attention to important things. But, I'm done with being taking advantage of!!!
Something got to give, because ASF International got to go!!!!

I wrote this to back up the other claims about ASF International and World Gym.

Thank you, great idea!

I appreciate your posting about how to make a cancellation with ASF International. As of right now I've been waiting over 6 weeks for ASF to "process" acceptance my proof of cancellation (I faxed 4 different documents demonstrating exactly what their customer service rep said I needed-I recorded the phone call). You have just saved me more hassle than you can know. I will be alerting a friend that signed a Kudos!

How to cancel your membership with ASF

AUTHOR: Riley Epson - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, March 04, 2009

ASF International is well known for their deceptive and ethically questionable billing practices. Normally, I would recommend simply trying over and over again to speak to someone at the company that would be willing to help you. Unfortunately, ASF gets paid based upon the number of people it PREVENTS from cancelling.

Here are the steps I took to get my membership cancelled.
Please keep in mind, these steps were only taken because I felt that the information I was provided when I signed up, and the information that ASF provided me with did not match up. When I originally signed up, I was told that one way I could cancell my account would be to provide a 30 day notice and pay the $50 cancellation fee. This was obviously not what ASF said, so the following steps were taken.

1) Write in requesting to cancell your account. You could also call in, but if you email or fax you will atleast have some documentation.
-ASF will undoubtedly direct you to their website to download their cancellation "request" form

Immediately switch over whatever kind of billing you have on file to manual invoicing. This will prevent ASF from taking further payments directly from your bank account/credit card, but this will also incur a $5-10 manual billing fee. Your call if you want to do this.

2) Draft a "lease" agreement for a property owned by friends or family that are located more than 25 miles from one of their gym's locations.
-Example lease agreements can be found online, and you can just fill in the blanks where needed.

Because ASF requires 2 forms of proof that you have moved (something that is unheard of in any other industry btw) you have a couple of options for the second proof. The second form that I found easiest to provide was a bank statement that was addressed to a location more than 25 miles from a gym. I was lucky as I had relatives that lived in another state, so I just used their address. Even if your gym (and your bank) are located in state X, you can still go to the bank and request that they change your address of record to a location in state Y.

After an account statement has been generated, you can couple that with the lease document and those will count as valid proof of residency.

It is a shame that ASF continues to do business in this manner, as it creates a situation where otherwise honest people need to resort to deception to escape these unethical contract.

Obviously, the best way to avoid these kind of situations is to stay away from gyms that use ASF international. I would highly recommend that you speak with a club owner when looking at potential gyms and ask them who they use to do their billing. Also, as much as I hate having to really dig deep into these contracts, make sure that you review the terms and conditions for cancellation and that it matches what the sales rep is telling you.

So, in summations.
1) Draft a lease agreement that says you are moving (and paying rent) to a location outside of their service area
2) Have you bank change the address of record and get a statement showing your new address.

Then say F*k off to ASF.

#4 UPDATE Employee

ASF International

AUTHOR: Chris - (U.S.A.)

Tawanda is somewhat confused about her renewal. Typically with health clubs, nationwide, have a clause in their agreements that states once the original term of the contract expires, the membership will automatically renew to a month-to-month membership. Once the membership renews, it can be cancelled by simply providing a 30-day written notiice to cancel.

The year 2039 date that Tawanda mentions in her complaint is actually a faux date on the account that allows the membership to continue on a month-to-month basis until she chooses to cancel. By no means would she be obligated to pay on a health club membership until 2039. First, that is rediculous and second, that would be illegal. Tawanda could have received an explantion regarding her renewal if she would have called our customer service center and asked.
