My wife who likes to chat, listen to her music took ages to fill her drive. The operating system got so curropted with installing and deleting it became time to do a backup. This is where things got fishy. During the backup phase, several times the software aborted with an error I have not seen in so long since I was a technician called "Data Buffer Underrun". This error I use to pull my hair out back in the days when writable CDR drives first came out. It happens when the computer couldnt keep up with the drive in sending data, casuing blanks on the CD making the backup completely useless. Drives of now, have protection to stop that.
Anyways, back to the backup. After wasting 30 cds, I decided it be much easier and faster to pull her drive and use my computer to back it up. Worked like a charm too I might add. It was when I did this, decided to clean the system of dust built into the fans and cables I noticed the drive. Not only was the drive from early 90s, it wasnt even the speed it was suppose to be.
CompUSA took an old drive from who knows where, put it in my wifes computer, saw it worked and gave it back thinking no one would be the wiser. Probably would have gotten away with it too except for me finding it.
It all boils down to this now. Anyone buying a computer from CompUSA, especially with service contract stands to get ripped off. Its like Buying system with 48x CD drive, 160 Gig HD, sending it in to be fixed and them replacing the drives with 30x, 120 GIG. Many people are not computer literate, so might not even catch it.
By the way, the computer also had a 80 GIG HD which got downgraded to 60 without any permission. They cant deny they didnt do this, the serial numbers they wrote on the repair slip mach the equipment they put in. Statute Of limitations are not up, close but arent. PLannign to fix that this week -)

Comp USA new management takes responsibility

POSTED: Wednesday, August 24, 2005Anyways, I spoke with the new manager, and brought coppies of the last repair records where the components had been switched with outdated parts which as I said before funny enough the technicians recorded the serial numbers. The manger now running the store saw that the past manager was in fact at fault and took the computer back and not only undid the damage, but put better parts new off the shelf.
I have run tests on the system and it is now running better then when it was new.
