I decided to better market myself to potential employers, an advanced degree in accounting along with the CPA credential would help launch my career. I chose the Master of Accounting and Financial Management program at Keller Graduate School of Management of Devry University. The typical pre-req's required of other accountancy programs are built into the MAFM program at Devry. Furthermore, Devry owns the Becker CPA Review, which is required for program completion should a student choose the CPA emphasis option.
I began my first class at Keller last month. Because I already have a master's degree in management from DePaul, I can honestly say that my one class has been challenging. Of course I am only halfway though the course, but it functions no differently from any other school I've been to thus far.
Unfortunately, I did not get onto the Internet and do my research on the school's reputation until a few days ago and after contacting major CPA firms with no reponse to my inquiries as to whether or not this degree with mean much. Since nobody has gotten back to me, I can only believe that the degree is not well-sought, nor is it taken seriously. I honestly feel that it is annoying advertising and ease of program entrance that gives it a bad name.
As much as I feel the education might be great at Keller, I have no choice but to take my money (student loans) elsewhere. I could get a great education for $30k, but I can't bear to go into more debt and have people question me because of a school name. Therefore, I will attend a smaller traditional school, hopefully this summer, to complete my Master's in Accounting.
It is a shame because I think the education could be very good---but I just don't think our society is ready to accept the annoying advertising and lack of standards as a serious university---in spite of accreditation.

While I appreciate Kristens analysis, I do find some of it faulty to say the least. I hold a BS in Business Administration- Summa Cum Laude from a regionally accredited university and elected to pursue my Master of Human Resource Management at Keller.
Kristen contacted several potential employers to determine the voracity and reputability of the institution. No one contacted her back, so she contends there is a correlation between her question and the silence she received as a result that this was affirmation that the Keller degree is not highly regarded. Using scientific methodology, she did not 1) propose a similar question regarding her degree at DePaul to determine if that degree is well regarded, and 2) does not take into account that perhaps, they were not interested in responding to her question.
The conclusion that just because she receives no response to her question makes the Keller degree any less desirable than another is pure sophistry. Her argument would have more legitimacy if she had for example, contacted employers to determine the reputability of both degrees. If she received responses stating the DePaul degree is well regarded, but the Keller degree is not, then her argument holds water. She did not do this. With too many other variables in play, it is unfair to make such a conclusion, especially when over 90% of DeVry and Keller graduates find employment within six months of graduation. How does her observation and conclusion account for that 90%? It does not. One cannot make a conclusion such as this unless she is willing to make a viable comparison, take into account other variables and overcome hard data, and she did none of these in her example.
