I lost my career out west and moved to Gulf Breeze, FL where I was trying to move on with my life. I ran 3-5 miles a day, I felt great, a new life beginning in a beautiful place, a peninsula in NW Florida called Gulf Breeze, surrounded by the ocean, the sea air was very good to my lungs as I ran, then one evening tragedy struck, but the kind that never should of happened. I stopped at one of the local city parks, there are about five in a 3 square mile radius as this is Gulf Breeze, a small community, a good community if you look at the outside, but underneath there where dangers and corruption that no one would ever suspect, dangers that the city knew about but did not care to fix. That night I was swinging on a commercial grade swing set, one that according to the manufacturer was designed to hold 500lbs. A link in the chain broke as I was swinging really high and fast like I was a kid again. I left the park screaming in an ambulance. I hit the ground with extreme force in the sitting position and felt as though my spine had went through the top of my head. The last 11 months of my life have been extremely painful, I can not run anymore and usually limp. The city of Gulf Breeze never once apologized or offered to pay for my medical care so desperately needed. My life has been turned upside down. I became homeless, limping around our city with no where to go and even thought of suicide as a way out of the pain and misery. It seems 10 months following my accident, there were still and still are swings about to fall apart in the parks of Gulf Breeze, FL as if the city is immune from all liability and actually wishes others to get hurt in their parks. The very same park only has one swing hanging from a set that used to have 4, I must have been victim number three and victim four should be along sometime soon as the links are worn on that swing too. I don't think this is ethically right, its simply a city setting human traps as though we are rats instead of tax payers. The city has known of the problem now for 11 months and they choose not to fix anything nor close the parks nor post danger signs. It seems in Florida, there are laws in place that say cities do not have to inspect or maintain their parks for safety, these are complex real estate laws from long ago. Governor Charlie Christ of Florida has also known about the problem in Gulf Breeze now for 8 months as well as Senator Bill Nelson and Senator Don Gaetz of Florida, yet nothing is done. I have been keeping an eye on those parks but no changes have been made to this day. Everyone I have written to ignores it as if it will just go away. Our local paper and TV stations are afraid of doing a story on it as Gulf Breeze is a small community full of attorney's that all work in nearby Pensacola, FL . I do not think that any attorney,city, or politician is immune from bad publicity where it is due, and this is way past due. Please help me open eyes to the fact that this type of thing is happening all across the nation and cities are hiding behind complex real estate laws so they are not concerned. An alarming number of kids are being injured annually from this negligence. I urge you to go out to your local parks and look around for dangers that exist, film them and post them online in as many video sites as possible. The city of Gulf Breeze should be ashamed of themselves and those responsible for ignoring these issues need to be relieved of their position with the city. Why should they be allowed to continue managing the city of Gulf Breeze, FL.
