I have had a Household Bank Master Card for about a year and a half. Interestingly, I didn't seem to encounter any problems until the balance grew close to the limit.

I have always made payments on time -- more often the minimum payment, but sometimes more -- but always on time. There has been an incident or two where I went over the limit (a pathetic $750), but I paid the fee, knowing it was my own doing. But several times over the past few months, I have been charged a $35!!! overlimit fee for reasons I cannot understand.

This week, I received an email that my Household Bank MC balance was over the limit. This was a shock, as I had paid my balance down in September, had made NO purchases, and all I expected for the next billing period was a new statement listing the minimum payment due.

Now my account is $60 over the limit, part of which is their outrageously criminal overlimit fee ..... an over-limit balance built in part by overlimit fees!!!

I can appreciate and sympathize with everyone who has posted here, and I offer my condolences. But after nearly 200 postings, I'm wondering -- how far will situations like this go, before an outfit like Household Bank is dragged before a big-time court and brought to justice???

Overlimit

AUTHOR: Jim - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, October 23, 2007

Dave - one of the things you probably need to check is whether the overlimit fee is based on the average balance on the card, not the ending balance at month's end. For example, if you happen to be $100 over the limit for the 1st 17 days of the month, and then $50 under for the remainder of the month (after you made a payment of $150), your average balance on the card will be over the limit and subject to the overlimit fee, even if you made no other charges on the card.

Insofar as whether they will ever be dragged into court - the answer is close to never. I understand - it stinks. However, the laws allow the practice to continue.
