I was 100 % retired as of February 1, 2008. I had contacted Idearc in October of 2007 by phone to cancel my advertising and was told everything would be taken care of. I sold my business and the new owner took over February 1, 2008. I am 100% retired and am still receiving bills for advertising in which they renewed in March 2008. I have been threatened and harassed by the customer service representatives at Idearc, as well as collection agencies they have turned me over to. I was told by Idearc that I would pay for this the rest of my life.

Talking to them is like talking to a stone wall. They are so rude! I even had the new owner contact them and they told her that it wasn't her problem and they couldn't discuss it with her. HOW DO I PROVE TO THEM THAT I AM 100% retired, out of business, and that they had no right to authorize advertising in March when I was already OUT OF BUSINESS!!?

I too am a victim of Idearc Media. They are vicious, ruthless and desperate as they have recently filed for bankruptcy. I have read many of the consumer complaints regarding them and it's the same old story time and time again. I unfortunately signed a contract for my business with them and there were problems from the beginning. I now have Allied Interstate hounding me but they are barking up the wrong tree. I learned a lot from the consumer complaints on this site and they have helped me tremendously. I am glad to see that you are not allowing these people to railroad you and I like you am willing to see them in court because in my opinion they are in breach of contract for failing to do what I paid them to do. Yes, I tried calling as others have and was given the runaround, lied to, ignored, etc. So, I decided to cancel any future "auto renewals" in writing (certified, return receipt mail). Ha, ha! I have the green card that they received the letter. I also sent a letter of complaint which they never acknowledged, however, I have the green card for that letter as well. I will not allow them to intimidate me in any way and I wish others would write letters of complaint (certified, return receipt) and letters of cancellation to prevent "auto renewals". Unfortunately, the auto renewal clause is in the contract in very fine print (you need to put your eyeballs on the paper to see it).
In closing, Idearc Media victims, stand up for your rights and fight them to the end!
We all should be encouraged that they have reaped what they have sown and are now bankrupt. Their stock holders are suing them, 2 lawyers in WV sued them and won....
They have all kinds of problems so let's kick them while they are down!
Show them no mercy.

I have a similar situation, and have a couple of ideas for you. You should not pay these people a penny until you have a firm agreement that the amount to be paid is full and final payment AND that they will not trash your credit reports. Then, pay with a money order so that you will not have further problems. If you have already sent in a payment, be sure you immediately send in a letter, by certified mail, that you want the ad canceled or Idearc will renew it AGAIN and charge you a higher price, to boot.

There is absolutely no use to call Idearc or any of the collection agencies. It is, however, imperative that you respond to any written demands for payment within thirty days. I have always responded in writing to the effect that the alleged debt is not valid and will not be paid without more written information with my signature. So far I am on my fourth collection agency and I have not called any of them or received any written feedback. I have received a few collection calls, but I always say the same thing as I send in writing: "this is not a valid debt, and do not call again." The person who called from Idearc was actually quite nice, but she has not sent further proof that the debt is valid either. I am waiting and I am willing to send payment if they can prove validity. I am also willing to go to court if it comes to that. One has to be very tough, similar to Stonewall Jackson, but they don't really have much of a legal leg to rely on, in my opinion.
