Movie Gallery should be prosecuted and shut down for good.

First: store managers are told they are paid on salary, but if you are sick, your "salary" suddenly becomes hourly, and though you are REQUIRED to work AT LEAST 45 hours per week, you only make about $8/hr. This with being in charge of all the sales, money, hiring, firing, safety, etc for the ENTIRE store.

You are required to handle customer complaints with no backup from any manager, as the district manager is required to push sales only. The practice of eliminating salaried pay for special circumstances is not on paper anywhere in their official practices, but apparently that's how it's done.

Second: Movie Gallery requires NO EMPLOYEE besides the "salaried" store manager to work overtime. This means that NO overtime may be reached by ANY employee but the manager, or you face penalties in reduced pay. In order to avoid this, I was trained to go into the individual employee files EVERY WEEK to lop off any overtime any employee had worked, NO MATTER WHAT HOURS THEY HAD ACTUALLY WORKED. Though this, also, is not in their official policies, it is how I was trained. WE WERE INSTRUCTED TO CHANGE EMPLOYEES TIMES regularly to make a favorable profit outlook, without any questions asked and WITHOUT EMPLOYEES' KNOWLEDGE. They were only told we could change their times if they forgot to clock in or out, but that IS A PATENTED LIE.

BOYCOTT MOVIE GALLERY for this practice! The customers at my old store did, and that location closed. Though the employees undoubtedly lost their jobs, at least they aren't being treated like vulnerable profit fodder any more!

#10 UPDATE EX-employee responds

CRAZY COMPANY

AUTHOR: A - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, June 05, 2006

I am an ex-employee of the company who was "let go".I have to be honest and say that this has been the best week of my life! My stress level has gone down instantly! My store was a high revenue store, yet they dont allow enough hours to have 2 people there at one time!

Therefore,we were expected to do our managers job, plus make 5o-60 phone calls a day, walk around and check for hundreds of movies on the shelf, empty dropboxes and put up hundreds of movies, all while managing payroll, revenue, stupid voicemail call ins, hiring, training etc!It is impossible to get everything done in 8 or 9 hours!

And dont dare call your district manager and ask for help, because you will not get it.And not to mention the money you have to fork out for buying stuff like balloons or streamers or postage up front, and then you get "paid back" 2 months after! Gee thanks!

You dont know the feeling of waking up in the morning and not having to go to Movie Gallery...they are definitely the WORST company I have ever worked for.I want to thank them for letting me go...i now have the summer off with my kids and am making the same thing from unemployment that i was when i was working for them! Whos laughing now? See ya!

pay & hours are bad, & this is for people who are adults, trying to afford a living.

AUTHOR: L - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, March 25, 2005

And this is a hard job to have. I am not sure if the pay is same for every movie gallery. But at mine, it seems as though the manager works more & makes less than the assistant. Because the manager has salary & works 55 to 60 hrs a week. The assistant makes hourly & works 40hrs or so a week. However, even still, the manager & assistant has been very loyal. And the manager has had to travel & train often, new managers at other movie gallerys as they often leave or are replaced. Probably due to this curcumstance of poor pay & therefore less quality workers or inexperienced.

To add, the workers make minimum starting out. The raises are nothing, literally. Maybe 20cents a year. Also, the most hours they give regular workers is 15 to 20 a week. It is not often that they will give more than that. They will not hire 18 or younger. So pay & hours are bad, & this is for people who are adults, trying to afford a living. Not just in highschool, paying for a car.

Therefore, I work two jobs, while going to college. But I stay with them because I get free movies & the staff at my job are like laid back comedians. They are alot of fun.

A better Way of Life

I am currently an employee of Movie Gallery, and I too was given a store with no notice...I received training and my district manager is always at my disposal for ANY type of question.

I do understand your frustration, as I get frustrated also, but Movie has made all the difference in my life. I was a single mother of two children, and Movie Gallery has given me a means to no only live, but SUPPORT me and my two children, we live very nicely, and only on what Movie Gallery pays me...

I am very sorry that your district manager made you alter time, but I ASSURE you that person is no longer with the company,(as that is against the law)if you were trained to alter time in any manner!!Movie Gallery IS NOT THE ENEMY!!

We now have over 2000 stores and the managers in my district as well as others that I know have great jobs and we are given GREAT benefits...we all get frustrated at times and we all want to quit at some time or another, and I am very sorry that you feel that Movie Gallery is not a great place to work. I am going to have to disagree because it has created a BETTER WAY OF LIFE for me and my children...

#2 UPDATE Employee

so sorry you are discontented

AUTHOR: Lawrence - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, August 07, 2004

Without wanting to make this a "religious" thing,my preacher has a response for people who ask him"why should I visit YOUR churchwhen I see
some of your members doing all sorts of things that aren't exactly what church people should be doing?" His response is that he "can't guarentee
the members, but he CAN guarentee the word of God"
He further says that what he preaches is the word of God, NOT that "all church-goers are perfect"
What I'm getting at here is that as an employee
of Movie-Gallery for the past 6 years, I'm dismayed by your strong discontentment and I take issue with most of it.Though I know some of the stores are probaballynot run to company standards, I also know that the company polocies are SOUND and will not tolerate unabidance if known by the proper authority.

1)Job descriptions, job responsibilities, job requirements and job salaries are all discussed
theroughly prior to giving-over a store to a MANAGER. "Manager"means managing the store.
2)All the district managers and regional I know are readily available for support and advice on all issues regarding customers and anything else.
They operate from the notion of what is best to ensure a satisfied customer.
3)controlling the cost of labor is part of all
"Management", not only at Movie Gallery, but at All corporations.A properly "Managed" store does not necessitate "part-time"employees to ever get
"over-time"
4)Editing,fixing or altering an employees
actual time worked is so against the law and so against company policy. how could you let yourself be talked into doing such a thing without calling the Movie-Gallery hotline(which
is set aside for just such a thing-the number is posted on the wall in the employee area of all stores)? 5)Direct-deposit is an option offerred free to anyone who doesn't want to use the card-
comdata also offers one free withdrawal per pay period-so you can get all your money at one time if you want to
Hope you find something that brings you more satisfaction, but please- know all the story before telling a bad-experience as if it is the norm. Movie Gallery has been, and continues to be one of the more positive experiences in my many
facetted life. Thank you!!!

Comdata pay cards. How cute.

AUTHOR: John - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, April 05, 2004

Let's not forget about the lovely way they pay people, with that stupid Comdata pay card. Oh it works just like an ATM, except it's got a 1.75 fee if you want to withdraw any sort of money on it. And you can write checks out of the account..with a fee. Of course. How cute.
