I was told that the 2003 Kia Sorento was a safe and reliable car. After a few months, the coolant resevoir cracked and leaked all out, no lights in dashboard came on. Temp gauge is always a little below normal. Warrantee took care of it. It was then that I investigated problems with this model and year car on the internet.

WOW... all the consumer complaints have been happening to me!! the latest, last week, was the bolt on the crankshaft broke, I lost steering and it stalled. I was just getting on the highway, but thank God it happened on the ramp and I was able to pull over off ramp. Had I been going 70 on the hiway-I would've been killed. This particular defect is happening and/or has happened and to some, more than once!

I am now afraid to drive it. I just got it back from the dealer on Friday, July 13 2007. It was there for 3 1/2 days. Brought it home and it is again making the same noises as it did when it died. What do I do? I'm not wanting to pay for a car that is so dangerous! I don't want to drive it either, but I have to. I don't feel right about selling it to anyone, either. The salesman at the dealershipt assured me that this was safe and reliable. I have only had it 1 year--bought it with 33,000 miles on it.

The salesman is another story. I am working on that with the dealership. Pricewise, I got totally ripped off. No one "forced" me to sign anything, but I guess I was just too trusting and I have learned my lesson. This car definitly needs a class action. And I also have absolutely no respect for the sales people at Ragsdale Kia in Shrewsbury, MA. They compromised my safety and well-being for me and my passengers!

What do I do now?

Would like to joint on class action suit

AUTHOR: Jim - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, May 24, 2009

My 2003 Kia Sorrento has the same issue with the coolant reservoir cracking and empty. Engineers tell me this is not actually a unit that provides cooling and did not cause the engine to overheat. At not far past the 65,000 mile time, the engine, with no warning, became so hot it stopped. Required over $3,000.00 in repairs. Siimilar situation at 80,000 miles. Only $1,400.00 this time.

Have been told by the dealer in Austin, TX and by Kia motors USA that although we have complete maintenance records showing compliance with their requirements, since the unit was past 65,0000 miles, the warranty is not in force. Yet, their sales person says it is!

If any one wants to form, are is already in, a class action suit please let me know .

#2 UPDATE EX-employee responds

lemon kia sorento

AUTHOR: Miked - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, October 24, 2008

i am just responding to your comments on the safety of the sorento, I used to work at the spencer store, I will agree that you probably paid to much for the vehicle but, in the terms of it being unsafe, the coolant tank leak is common on the early model sorentos, kia redesigned the tank cause they had problems with it. secondly the crankshaft bolt failure was a recalled part, had you been driving on the highway going 70 when it broke you would hardly been killed, power steering is not needed at highway speed and the brake booster stores enough vacuum for three safe stops without the engine running. the car was in the shop for so long because that is not an easy repair especially if the threads in the crankshaft were comprimised, every car maker has recalls, kia does do a good job warrantying claims of known problems.

You might want to see if your state has a Used Car Lemon Law and see if you qualify. I have had similar problems.
