On Monday September 27th, at about 4pm, I went into The Mattress Company store on Main st. in Norwalk, Ohio to purchase a full size mattress set for an apartment that I was going to sign a lease on that evening.  I paid $378.78 cash for my purchase.  The salesman, 'Richard' told me that because they had the set in stock it could be delivered on Friday, 10/01.

When I went to the apartment on 9/27 to meet with the manager, the lady that drives and assists me noticed that the apartment had bugs crawling everywhere.  I did not notice the bugs the first time I looked at it because I have vision problems.  I asked for my security deposit check back.  It was returned immediately to me.

 I called The Mattress Company immediately, but they were already closed.  We even drove by the store but it was empty.  I left a phone message for 'Richard' the evening of 9/27 informing him that I was not accepting the apartment and that I would not be needing the mattress set.

The next morning at 10am when the store opened, I called Richard again.  He told me to come in and he would have a check ready.  I told him that I lived in a town over 30 miles away and could he please mail the check to me.  He said he would mail it out that very day which was 9/28.  Today is Saturday, Oct. 2nd and it was not in the mail.  At 1pm today I called The Mattress Company to inquire about the refund and I was told that it was 'to soon for a refund.'  I think it is strange that when 'Richard' assumed that I lived in Norwalk he was going to refund my money right away.  When he found out I was living in another city, all of a sudden it is 'too soon for a refund'.  I am filing this report on this site because the young man I spoke with today at about 1pm, 10/2 cursed at me over the phone.  That's right Molly and Richard Barcus, sr. owners of this establishment, your son David cursed at a 62 year-old lady.  What kind of crooks are you anyway?

On Thursday, Sept.30th, I received a call from someone at your warehouse regarding delivery of the mattress set.  At that point I realized that I was not going to get my refund so I went to the Better Business Bureau for assistance.  I filed a complaint against this company, but in doing so I found out they have a poor rating.

On Monday Oct. 4th, I intend to file a complaint with the Ohio Attorney General's office.  These people think that because I live in another city than Norwalk, that they are going to cheat me out of my money.  I have a lot of resources available to me.
I will file a small claims court case if the money is not returned.  I have a reputable witness and all receipts and phone records.

Stay away from the mattress company.

The Mattress Company would like to say, "In our 19 year history of selling quality mattress sets to thousands of customers in numerous counties in northern Ohio, we have our first complaint."

There are a couple of truths in the complaint.  The customer did buy a mattress and the customer did get a refund.  All other sentences between are misleading and inaccurate. We feel the customer complaint is from a professional complainer.  The customer appears to have a game plan ready due to having done this to other businesses.

The Mattress Company has provided quality, service and trust for 19 years.  We have helped many people lead healthier lives due to better sleep.  Our highly trained professional and knowledgeable sales associates have helped customer choose from our large selection of name brand mattress sets.  Our repeat business is phenomenal.

The Mattress Company Superstore is on Route 250 in Sandusky, Ohio. In Fremont we are located on Route 53 next to Staples and in Norwalk we are downtown next to Hill's Interiors.

got my money back

I finally received a refund from this company. After numerous calls and a certified letter concerning legal action against them, I received a refund.  On 10/04, I was told by Richard Barcus, that I needed to blame the USPS for their delivery problems.  I called my local post office and was told that a letter from this city to mine (30 miles) would take only one day.  The mail delivery in my area (cleveland and suburbs is very fast).  It should not have taken 8 days.  I really think without all of the help I received from consumer websites etc., I would not have gotten my money back. 
Anyway, the BBB has given this company a "C" rating.
