I am a former branch manager for United American and Liberty National. If you are a United American or a Liberty National agent let me speak to you first. Get out now. You can still have a great insurance job somewhere else and be able to sleep well knowing you are helping people and not hurting them. You may be to new to UA or LNL and have not seen the claims that will get filed with the policies you are selling but they will start to come in and you will not sleep once you find out what you have done to hard working families.

I worked for UA for 3 years. Started off as an agent, then unit manager, and then finally Branch manager. UA use to be a very respectable Insurance company. I use to because they now see themselves as a recruiting company. I once heard in a managers meeting a very high up say we are a recruiting company not an insurance company.

As managers we were taught to lie in our presentations. Say anything to get anyone hired that ususally meant say one we are hiring managers and not agents. Tell them truthful yet unattainable possibilities about income potential while leaving out any possible negative. The point was to hire at all cost and then see what sticks. Once sometimes twice a month we would have "cattle calls" or recruiting seminars where the goal was always to have 100 "butts" in seats that usually meant getting about a 1000 confirmations. Once we had the poor saps in the room we would start get them to fill out all their personal information before they knew what it was for. We would then take that information and start typing up a contract with it on laptops in the back.

Once the event was over we would call them to the back one by one and get them to sign an e-pad to get them hired many times without them knowing what they were signing. We would often tell them it was for a background check to see if we can get you a writing number. If we did get them a writing number that meant we hired them and charged them a $15 appointment fee.

I feel sorry for the directors that had to do this day in and day out from city to city living as just shells of humans. Their job didn't use to be like that and there are two people to blame I they are the only two people I feel like calling out personally.

United American has never been a Major Medical insurance company. They use to be the best at what they did in defined benefit medical plans. However, this changed with the introduction of a plan called the Flex or FlexPlus. This made them the worst at what they do. They say they aren't supposed to replace major medicals with it but they do all the time. I saw a $42,000 hospital claim only payed $11,000 with a Flex. And they were paying over $300 a month for the policy. That should be criminal. Agents will come on here and say they knew what they were getting they signed the papers. The papers are meant to be confusing and misleading and unless the person as a insurance or law background they will more than liking go by what the agent tells them. This should be criminal.

I too was with the company for years, nine to be exact. I fell for the same line of "You'll make hundreds of thousands a year in your second full year if you put in the effort". Well, my first full year I was ranked in the top 20 agents company wide and achieved that 3 times during my tenure. I also qualified for 6 yearly conventions for "top producers". I worked every day and put in more effort than most. My last full year with the company, I made $93,000. Not bad, but far from the income they told me I would make.  I made most of my money selling medicare supplements. However, the prices went through the roof and I began to lose many clients that I had worked hard to get. They would always call and say "You have always been very good to us, but we have no choice to go elswhere because of the rapidly increasing premiums". I lost these clients because of something I had no control of. I was promoted to Unit Manager and learned about the recruiting and training tactics. I refused to lie to people about what they would make and used my own personal experience as an example. Now, that wasnt something most people could relate to as I had come to United American with years of experience in sales. I wasnt about to tell somebody that they could make mid six figures with no experience  and I was told I wasnt "buying" into the philosphy. I then decided to research other companies before making up my mind wether to stay or go. I began at this website and IMMEDIATELY, decided it was time after reading pages and pages of these types of stories. Most other companies had very few, if any, complaints. The good news is that the new company I represent has shown me what a good company does for its agents and clients. It provided excellent training and support, great leads and a very professional approach to the business. The only bad thing, I wish I had left years ago as I would have been completely vested already. I was 12 years away from being vested with United American. Hind sight really is 20/20.

I too was an agent and Unit Manager for United American. I am witness to the same negative experiences that so many have written about. I was a victim of the brainwashing that took place as well. Not to toot my own horn, but I was good enough to stay over 4 years and sell that crap at the inflated rates only to see cancellation rates reach above 50% and rates nearly double. I left with a 0.00 debit balance. My renewals after over 4 years were almost $1,000 a month. Pathetic for any company.After leaving I miraculously ended up with a debit balance several months later.To the employee that said the ex branch manager was a loser. Why are over 90% of the agents gone from over 4 years ago? Why are 80% of the branch managers from over 5 years ago gone. Why did so many agents and branch mangers leave with tens of thousands of dollars in debit balances each? Get your head out of the sand or is it out of your ass, before you will be writing a reponse like this in the future. Why is United American changing it's name to Liberty National as of August? Is it because the name is synonomous with the phrase "rip off"? Those are questions I would like you or anyone else to answer with a straight face. Facts are facts. By the way, you said you are on track to make 120-150 K. They said the same to me. You haven't made that money. Thats just what they told you. My renewals after 3 years of leaving them were 5 times what they were when I left. The grass is flourescent green on the other side. Don't waste your time. I did. Heed my warning!

i work for the company, have been working for 2 years and in those 2 years have gone from a cotton mill worker to being on track to make over 120 to 150 k this year. this company has given me all of the tools, resources and training i need to be where i am today. i am a unit manager and have seen many agents fail at this, and every time they blaim the company. but i know why they fail. they're lazy! they won't work! i know this because early in my career i did the same things they did. but i decided to pick my lazy butt up and become productive and make a living for myself. andy king is not the reason people fail at this, you are.

Boiler Room-Model for success?

If you want to see how the "interview" process works, how your first day will be, what to expect after that or other company practices, watch the movie "Boiler Room". I caught it last night and was amazed at how similar some of the practices were. I know this from recent experience.
The movie deals with shady stock broker practices, but many of the recruiting and so-called training experiences were almost exactly the same.

Either way it is a scam. New recruits do all the dirty work, leg work, cold calling etc. at their own expense (such as paying for all copies of material that they are expected to hand out), while the unit managers and branch managers get the real leads and make the money. The pressure the managers put on the "agents" (business cards say "Field Representative") to make as many calls/contacts as possible, is very much the same as in the movie. Take the time to watch this movie before you even consider getting involved with any Torchmark Company.

On another note, I recently left the company-literally just walked out. Yesterday, I received a form letter from United American saying I owe them an "unrecoverable debit balance". I have no idea what this is! I never even wrote a policy for them. I wrote some for their sister company, Liberty National, but never for United American. Isn't this just another way for them to bleed even more of MY money from me? Especially considering they got over $400 from me in less than 30 days. What kind of reputible company expects you to pay them, and offers NO compensation for work you did for them? I have no intention of paying them another dime.

My mission now is to do any thing within my power to see that no one else gets taken in and burned by any of the Torchmark companies.
