I attended the orientatation yesterday at the Marietta office in Atlanta, GA on 1100 75 Cirle Pkwy. I don't like the hiring process. I had to sit and watch a tape for 2 HOURS only to be told "Well call you" from the black woman, but she said "it depends on what she says."

She was talking about the white woman standing next to her. Not only did I waste time watching a tape for 2 hours that didn't start on time, but I also had to waste time and take the test afterwards! Why not interview FIRST then have the new hirees watch a two hour tape and take a test. The two receptionist had nasty attitudes as well! It looks like they were offended because I finished the test first over the guys. Well I do have experience in security. Those two women are fat and gave nasty looks to all the thin females.

I just wanted to put forth my two cents.  I am a Wackenhut employee, hence why I have so much time on my hands too, lol.  Well I needed a job, so I took what I could get.  I figured these guys seem like a legit and pretty sound company.  Well after my week and a half of "in class" training that I only got paid minium wage for, and my pants that they expect me to pay to get fitted, and my on the job training in which my "trainer" put forth VERY minimal effort, I find myself sitting at a computer for long hours literally wasting my life.  I will of course be the first to admit that I could have a much worse job, but this company will work you to the full extent of the law.  C.O. law allows an employer to work an employee 12 hrs. straight without overtime, and believe me, they get every bit of their 12 hrs. too.  So here I sit at a computer evey Saturdat AND Sunday from 7am to 7pm by myself with no scheduled breaks.  I am 29, and wasting my life away for this company.  I get no exercise, I do not use any skills and I have no motivation what so ever to exceed in expectations.  I am not part of "them" so I see no future here....if you seem like a "push over" they will capitolize on that in a heart beat, and if you don't do what the "big dogs" want thay can make your life terrible.  I work with someone who got a "new" graveyard schedule that tears up her family seemingly after Mr. Big man didn't get what he wanted-he seems absolutly unwilling to work with her on this.  Hopefully when I leave she can have my schedule(the one he wouldn't give her, but gave me....the new guy) I hope thats why God wants me here.  Well in the mean time I am simply a body taking up a space in time.  So here I sit...wasting my time and theirs...producing minimal effort at a minimal wage.  I wore my new "fun" socks today.  This is what my life has become.  However I do have a pretty sweet setup for ski season!

After I left security, I went and learned to drive a truck.

Make more money. Haul a lot of needed merchandise and it is a GREAT life for me!

You need to get out of private security so you can feed your family and give them a better life.

To all,

I use to work for the military-correctional-officer-rejects-ex-crooked-policemen-wanna-be-robot-cops company about 4 years ago. I agree with the people that said you have to watch a long draw out boring tape and then slap you with a drug test and everything. Wackenhut usually have one of the sorriest receptions working at the front desk with an attitude problem. So...word of advise, when you see the receptionist with an attitude problem, then most likely the entire staff, the supervisors, and the site managers and the officers has the same attitude. Then when you work at the post that they assign you to, it'll have the strangest rules and procedures that OSHA would shut it down. Not having a bathroom break, lunch break, the shifts are boring, you can't read on post, can't talk on the phones, but the site supervisor can, long wacky patrols, no good benefits, you can't call-off, the other officers will set you up for you to loose your temper and job, the officers play mind games, ect.

This is the worst security company ever.
Wackenhut is toooo militan and don't want to pay, but minimum wage.

ENFORCEMENT OF LABOR LAWS? IN TEXAS?

Well, I tried calling them for myself ( The Wackenhut Corporation - security guard division --Austin/Round Rock, TX ) last week ( Sept 2004)to see if it is really true that they clear you out of the database -- asking for an employment verification for myself and the woman who answered the phone looked in their former employee database and was unable to find me. To make sure, she at least had the courtesy to transfer me to human resources and the person there told me that I was NOT in their computer base as EVER having worked there.

So who do I report it to? and even if I did, nothing would be done. As usual.Ma'am you are right!

I also worked for Burns in 1993-1994 and for Wells Fargo Guard Service throughout 1994 and Burns and most of Wells Fargo Guard Services outside of San Antonio, TX here were assimulated by Securitas and Securitas has NO record of me EVER having been at Burns.Most personnel records were dumped during the merger. I called the San Antonio, TX office of Wells Fargo Guard Services and they advised that they didn't keep employment records past eight years. I don't see the Feds busting down their door to make sure they are doing their former employees right.

I also know about another security company in Austin,TX (still in business) who was taking payroll deductions for social security and all the rest of it but did NOT pay ANYTHING to the appropriate governmental agencies --yet the money was still coming out of our checks. I had to call Social Security in person and in THAT case, social security MADE them pay into that fund for me. They had NO choice. They went into bankruptcy twice ( And did NOT tell the employees, I found out by a fortunate accident) because of ALL the money they owed to IRS but at least they got out of paying all the back wages they owed --including mine.

ALL SECURITY COMPANIES HAVE INNUMERABLE WAYS TO CHEAT YOU OUT OF YOUR PAY!

If you insist the security companies give you a fair paycheck, you get a reputation as a troublemaker and attempts will be made to blackball you. And ALL Of them will apparently try. There are so many students and people desparate for work here that they just consider it a bribe and a cost of doing business...Nobody is apparently supposed to loook at their paycheck before they cash it and nobody is supposed to care. Security company employers are extremely suspicious of anybody with a high school diploma and more here -- as a rule.

And, like the other former employees, I WILL give Wackenhut credit for the fact that ONCE YOU CALLED THEIR ATTENTION TO THE SHORT PAYCHECK, THEY HEMMED AND HAWED AND PROCRASTINATED LIKE EVERYTHING --BUT-- you EVENTUALLY got your money. The trick was, YOU had to catch their bookkeeping, er, errors.

Of course, most concerned American workers are also seeing efforts to ELIMINATE Overtime pay and to set the minimum wage to $2.50/hr. anyway... and NO enforcement at ALL here of any EEOC provisions. UNLESS you have a powerful advocacy group like the NAACP or LULAC to speak up for you if you have been unjustly treated.That's the ONLY way these people will listen to you.
I received my last W-2 from The Wackenhut Corporation in 2001. I called them in 2004. I am NOT in their database as a former employee either.And it has been less than 10 years.

Wackenhut also took the money from my check to pay for the mandatory State licensing fee for officers permitted to carry firearms and I called the regulatory board after I left and it never showed up in their online records. Big deal, that's how many security companies do it here. Nothing is ever done even if you report them to their regulatory board but then the "investigators" go and tell the company reported who reported them. You don't do THAT more than once...and you are still out for all the money they toook out of your pay.

Something really needs to be done to reform the private security business in Texas and possibly the USA! Believe it or not, most of it is becoming concentrated in OVERSEAS corporations out of Sweden, Denmark ( where the one that now owns the Wackenhut Corporation is from) and England. Is anybody but me concerned that these foreign-owned companies can license their employees to carry firearms, ANYBODY that is hired by them, and they can circumvent the rules of operation as mandated by the State of Texas as usual?

I have the feeling ANYBODY unfortunate enough to have walked through THAT door would have been treated the same. How can those women treat people with respect when THEY are being DISRESPECTED on the job. As a matter of fact, I would have taken their attitudes into consideration when I applied and then I would have walked out right then and there.

*It doesn't matter what excuse you use Discrimination IS discrimination! What a STUPID excuse to use! This is no better than saying that the reason why minority guests at a restaurant was given a back table in a half empty and clean restaurant is because the host or hostess was in a "bad mood". If those women are stupid enough to stay there then that's their problem, because their mood will change from bad to worse if they ever meet the wrong person who will report them to higher authorities about their attutudes! Quit with the excuses! These women were hateful towards a thin woman! Didn't you read the other posts? It said the women were SMILING at the other overweight women but nasty to the thin ones! So bad mood? I guess so when it comes to jealousy! Deny all you want, but there is jealousy by overweight women to thin women in the work place! And may God have mercy on YOUR soul for worshipping other "deities"!

If that were true, you would not have received a W-2 form at the end of the year. Employers are required by federal and state laws to maintain employment and payroll records for a minimum of ten years following termination of employment.

It could be that when you left, you did not sign a release allowing them to give any information about you. I know that even with a release, most employers will only verify that a former employee worked there, nothing more, out of fear of being sued by the former employee. I know that my employer (a major medical center) will not even verify if someone is eligible for rehire. Because of this, every employee must pass a background check before we begin work.

You mentioned that you have mobility problems. Did you check with your state's Fair Employment division to see if you have any recourse?

Thank you Mary,

I was impressed with your information concerning Wackenhut. I have never, and will never condon discrimination. I just wasn't raised that way.

In my life I have been engaged to a jet engine mechanice and a deisel mechanic while in the USAF. I also have a daughter that I tell to not settle on being a nurse if she wants to be a doctor. I don't mean to put down nurses, I just wanter her to understand that she should make her choice based on her desires, not what society thought.

I am not necessairly a big fan of business. I have been laid off 3 times in 20 years because of downward economies or shipping of jobs over to China.

Evem with a business degree I have given up on the corporate world and am back in school to get my teaching license. My goal? To help children become good citizens. That means not only obeying the law, but to behave in a manner which is supportive and caring. Regardless of race, sex, appearances, religion or anything else.

There aren't too many people my age (45 y.o.) in my classes, also I am usually the only male in my classes. Fortunately I have had lots of kind support from the faculty and the students.

I think from what you are saying that Wackenhut isn't treating any of their employees right. And, that is a RIP-OFF.

I am a really big supporter of ROR because I think that it is the only forum where us little people can in any way match the big guys. Before something like ROR a company could afford to abuse individuals because there wasn't a way for them to get together. Now there is!

I am just concerned that the reports be as accurate as possible for the maximum impact.

It wasn't necessairly my intention to say that you weren't treated unfairly, but that it might not have to do with the reasons you believed.

For me personally, when someone reacts to me I look to myself to see if there is something that I have done which caused the reaction. I can control what I do, I can't control how others react to me.

It is SO obvious that not many persons who responded to my posts are from Texas although one lady from Georgia does know a lot about how good people are used up and thrown away. It happens a lot to people in the South. Even Georgia. Especially Texas.

I posted what happened to my husband for being a good, loyal employee of WACKENHUT to save other people from having to go through the same ordeal. IT'S JUST NOT WORTH IT!

They even wrote an article praising his terrific job performance in the company magazine before they terminated him by setting him up for failure. Ironically, he never got to see it because they wouldn't give a copy of that magazine to him and when I politely e-mailed the editor of that publication requesting a copy of that article, they never responded.

I am NOT prejudiced against thin women,well ANY woman, actually. I was telling her that the women who interviewed her might have been in such a bad mood because WACKENHUT TREATS WOMEN EMPLOYEES UNFAIRLY -- ESPECIALLY WOMEN SECURITY PERSONNEL. The women she talked to were probably none too secure in their work and stressed out daily and were taking it out on anybody and everybody who walked through the door. It might not have even had anything to do with whether or not the job applicant was thin.. or fat... or purple.. or even a space alien.

They promise bright, big, equal opportunity, happy futures at Wackenhut with unlimited advancement potential but you will actually end up like my husband did. In real life.

Now that some International Megaconglomerate Security Corporation from Denmark owns The Wackenhut Corporation, we will watch and we shall see what we shall see but I don't think things will change at all.

Wackenhut only needed me to protect the panic-stricken Corporate high-tech clients during Y2K. Once that was over, they got rid of me. I wish they had been more upfront about it being just a temp gig in the first place because I would have insisted on MORE pay.

My husband got another job the next DAY after he was terminated from Wackenhut.
I was just telling what happened to ME at Wackenhut when I worked THERE.
They almost paid me a living wage.

But they don't like women there either and they like to play one against the other. Especially with the RACE CARD! Big time.

I like to read this site and post the TRUTH about the many security companies I have worked for throughout the years and tell people what happened to me so they won't make the same mistakes I did. Even though at the time there WAS NO other alternative for me. Newspapers went to hell and I had to take the first job I could find outside of the newspaper trade and it happened to be a security guard job at minimum wage.

I have to catch the mobility impaired bus to get to the library and I use the free, public access computer in there. I DO NOT WORK FOR WACKENHUT. I haven't been there in years! I dont think I will EVER work for the one in Austin,TX again after the way they conveniently set me up for failure -- at the hands of a female supervisor, by the way and then they CANNED HER TOO. So she didn't have long to spend the overtime she was after by setting me up. Wackenhut works like that.

And I have NEVER before seen so much PREJUDICE against women in the workplace like I am seeing NOW, regardless of their age, race, religion, etc. The attitude in Austin,TX seems to be:"In these economic hard times, that little woman needs to be at home and give that job to a MAN!"

I hope that the lady who posted the original complaint on Wackenhut will find a much better-paying job SOMEWHERE ELSE. Because it just is NOT worth it.She deserves a lot better and so do the two harried, unhappy ladies who interviewed her.

By the way, Wackenhut in Austin, TX used to erase your name from the former employee database immediately after you were terminated. So if you have to list your places of employent back for 10 years, you are FRIED. That's the sort of thing they LIKE to do. And Allied/Spectraguard is even worse!

Anybody still want to work for THE WACKENHUT CORPORATION? The Austin, Texas office anyway.

May whatever Diety you worship have mercy on your soul.

Darren and Helen it is TOO TOO Obvious that you two WORK for Wackenhut! Your Husband working for Wackenhut Helen? Please! Don't think so! Because it would be your HUSBAND posting a repsonse and not YOU! Especially LONG POSTS! Plus you sound like a COMPLETE BIMBO! Hurt from security? HOW can anyone get hurt from sitting at the DESK!? There is more of a chance that a maid can get hurt quicker! There are women in the police and military that do MUCH MORE and don't get hurt and if they do they are prepared for what comes their way! SO WHAT'S a RENT A COP JOB when all you do is SIT THERE signing people in and not allowed to do police jobs? All you do is observe and report! It's a receptionist in uniform job! As far as weight discrimination goes, it looks like to me that you two are both owverweight comdemning a thin person for speaking out against reverse discrimination! Discrimination is discrimination! You have no idea. First, did you search my name? Of course you did... but it would show that I couldn't be a shill for Wackenhut... but you don't want to address that.

Like I said, you can ignore me, rebut me, but why stay with an attack that is so easy to disprove?

It is possible for people to have differing opinions. I do know that harassment and discrimination is out there. Racial, age, sex... you name it.

I still feel that it is strange that you were discriminated against because you finished your test first and you are skinny.

If that is true however, then wouldn't it be two women discriminating against a woman?

Funny that I again find Darren being accused of someone he's not. He is telling the truth, he is a regular ROR poster and can be found in many different reports doing rebuttals. Sherri from Piedmount is another regular in here. /me waves to you both!

My husband is a retired police officer and he's also worked both private security for individuals and companies thru the years. In this state he was run thru the DOJ, criminal record check and fingerprint check, when he went back to working for a company this past year. Only then could he get his state license to work again in the field. He's told me the same stories about applicants that Sherri's husband told her. Security used to be an 'easy' job to get to hold you over till you could find a better paying one, but that has changed these days. Now they do check everyone out very carefully.

The two women you mentioned that were in the office that day .. if there were only 2 of them, why even bring up that one was black and one was white? Makes no sense to me. Anyway, if you are so slim and trim, could it be they were looking you over and thinking 'she's too little to do security, she could get hurt!'?

Why is it when I question the reporter I am accused of being an employee of the company the report was made on?

Come on... I would assume that if a person is perceptive enough to be a security guard, they would do a quick search of my name and see that I have posted reports over a wide range of topics. Many of them way before this Wackenhut report.

I am not able to look into the future and go... "Gee, I need to post comments on a bunch of reports so I can be a shill incase someone reports on Wackenhut."

Now, I could see if my name was Joe, or John or something common like that. But... mine is unique enough that it is easy to search.

Don't worry about my time. I am pretty good at managing it.

I am more and more convinced that the possible reason the women were rolling their eyes was due to an attitude and had nothing to do with your finishing the test first or being skinny.

You may choose to ignore my comments, or rebut the comments, but please, don't embarass yourself by saying that I am a shill for the company when it is so easy to find the truth about that.

Hi All,
Okay... so now it is prejudice against thin people. When there are postings here we can only go on what is posted by the person reporting. Yes, I read her post and I also read her respones to the people that she fealt were disrespectful to her.

Have you ever heard of those cute little tricks they use in business to get the beautiful people? Like, "FOA" meaning Front Office Appearance (i.e., cuties). So, along with the "race card" we can now play the "thin card"?

They might not have been rolling their eyes at the fact that the reporter was thin... but that because she was rolling her eyes and making comments (verbally or with body language) that said that she was not happy with the way the interview process was set up.

Introspection before looking for outside sources of blame, to me, is a sign of maturity. Believe me, I am known for being impatient when it comes to things not set up the way that I think they should... and I often do speak my mind. But, when people don't appreciate it I understand that it was because I chose to say something and accept the consequences. I didn't look for differences between us to blame.

For a professional, especially in security, I thought that it was unusual to have a report that sounded very "thin skinned" and her descriptive words sounded malicous, not informative.

That is just the nature of the written communication. When each person reads they bring into it their experiences, their thoughts and their beliefs. 2 people can read the same thing and come away with 2 different interpretations.

Pamela - First of all... I am a 45 y.o. white male... so I am not gonna worry about whether I was playing the race card to give an excuse for my not making it in the world, or that people have been down on me. Also, I don't work for the company, I never heard of them until just about the time with this posting. I did read another report about the company. Actually I am going to college to get my teaching license.

When I read descriptions of sex, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion or anything else I stop to see if there is a significant reason for it. Why is it relevant? Does it reveal something about the people being described? Or maybe the person doing the description.

I don't take it out of hand that a person making a description is biased. But, often times, it is irrevelant and it can show the mind set of the person making the report. I try to treat each report here the same... objectively as I can. And, if you read enough of these reports you will see where people do attribute race to many stupid things.

I just wanted to open it up to there might have been more going on then it seemed... and interaction between the reporter and her obvious dislike with the process and maybe the women picking up on it.

I still think that there was a lot of spitefulness in the original report that distracted from the validity of the report. When I hear someone blaming everyone and everything else then I become suspicous (just like you would if you heard that it was race... you would look to see if there was anything other than race that could explain the situation). Right? Be fair.

So you were bored with the stupid training film? I was too.
The guy in there waddling like a duck while that pseudo-military march music blared in the background was laughable but I managed to keep it to myself because I needed a job too much. I hope that they have replaced that stupid tape for something a little more contemporary!
IF you found that tape boring, imagine how much more boring you would find it to be in the lobby of an office building all night, just sitting there, forbidden to use a radio, read any literature, eat at the desk ( even though OSHA says you will get a lunch break for 8 hours of work) YOU are not given a lunch break and would probably be forbidden to use the regular employees' breakroom even if you could get a lunch break! You can't drink anything there either and there is a surveillance camera that is trained upon you to make sure you don't do any of the above. Even your time to use the restroom is timed using the surveillance cameras, which is against OSHA rules and regulations too...
BORING! And rather inhumane...

At least you had female hiring personnel at the Wackenhut where you went. The only Wackenhut female personnel I saw in the Austin, TX were the Black ones in the office --because they have an advocacy organization who would speak up for them if they were fired -- and a series of all other kinds of women just drift on through. ESPECIALLY female security officers --race did NOT matter nor did age...You were going to be history within a year or two.
It's "We HAVE to hire you people BUT we don't have to KEEP you people" unless a specific client requests a particuliar guard and in most cases, this appears to be unlikely.
Wackenhut, like other businesses which were not traditionally female-hiring businesses, HAS to HIRE women or at least INTERVIEW them but then they can justify the discrimination against them by saying " Well, we HIRED them but they just never seem to work out." This can be due to a hostile work environment, sexual harrassment, discrimination, setting women officers up for failure ( E.g., knowingly assigning them to a job that is beyond their capacity to perform either physically or mentally, putting them where they will NOT be welcome on a site where women are NOT wanted or even tolerated and the client has specified "NO women here") and then when the inevitable complaint comes, the woman is FIRED for cause which means NO unemployment benefits.
Of course the client will not publically admit to the "No Women Policy" and her appeal is dead where it stands.
Maybe it was a great thing that you weren't hired at Wackenhut because you may have kept from being blackballed in the future.
If you are physically fit enough now, skip private contract security all together and go to a regular police or sheriff of constable agency. Women corrections officers are always in demand and you will have a lot steadier work than in sorry private contract security as a whole. One company is almost the same as the other, the only difference is in the wages they pay and the color of the uniform that you wear.
Probably te two women who interviewed you had nasty attitudes is the way they were being treated. The ax was going to fall on them and they weren't exactly sure when or where. That does NOT make a happy or congenial work environment in ANY company, by the way, but is ESPECIALLY true of security!

You are right! The interview process was given before the drug and background check! I know I am not on drugs or have a criminal background so I know I wouldn have passed both of those! I heard one of the women tell a guy the procedure and she told me the same. You had to fill out the application, set up a time to see the 2 hour tape, then take a test on what you saw, then the interview, background and drug test.

It's a waste of time because it's backwards! I don't want to waste 2 hours (which didn't start on time) to watch a tape, but won't get considered in the first place. Not even a chance to interview. The test was EASY and even EASIER because I have almost 2 years of security experience. They didn't even check the test at ALL! Only took the application and the test while giving me a nasty look and said "we'll call".Those two women were spitefully rolling their eyes at the thin women and giving them nasty looks while smiling at the overweight women that came to apply.

Not Wackenhut, but for a company specializing in hospital security. You would be surprised how many applicants come in with a criminal record, thinking that the company won't find out. There are also a lot of well-qualified applicants who pass the testing portion, only to fail the drug screen.

My husband read your posts and wondered if you went into the office with the same attitude. He says if you did, he would not have hired you either.

But I also forgot to add that as far as not passing the test, she said she has experience. Plus it;s not like the questions are ROCKET SCIENCE anyway. Are you offended because a WOMAN was the first to finish and possibly pass? You have women in the military so you are a little late to be offended by one in SECURITY! Also, I know someone else that works for Wackenhut and he said right after the applicants thake the test, the immediately set up an interview time the SAME DAY! These women purpose gave her a hard time! Maybe it was because she was thin and they are fat! Either way, she was spitefully treated!

PERHAPS THEY TESTED BEFORE THE INTERVIEW FOR A REASON

It would not make sense to go through the interview process before testing, as they probably wanted to interview applicants afterwards, after they had test scores. Having security experience, you should also know that security companies usually also run DOJ background checks, drug screening and some even run credit checks before hiring, so it isn't an "on-the-spot" process.

Could you help clarify a few things. I sort of got the part about watching the video before the interview.

From there you lost me. Is there a particular reason to describe the race of each person? Is this relevant to the report? Also, was it a beauty school or modeling or something? Otherwise I am not sure what the stature of the women has to do with this report either.

Possibly with your experience in security you are conditioned to observe, classify and report. Which might be great if you were filling out a description for a pair of armed robbers.

Unfortunately, because of your words and the spitefullnes of it, it detracts from the facts and gives it much less impact and validity.

I understand you are upset and maybe even hurt, but if you are going out to present your case to the world, then more objectivity and facts while a bit less "colorful" description would help you.
