I purchased a several hundred dollar pair of progressive reading glasses at Bard Optical's Springfield Illinois branch earlier this year.  Upon my return to evaluate and pick-up the glasses, I found that they were defective.  The location of the progressive viewing fields were very small and in the wrong location on the lenses, requiring that I raise my head to an odd and uncomfortable angle and not move my head in the slightest or objects would get blurry.

Upon reporting these defects to the branch manager I was told that they would ONLY refund my money if I was able to prove that my prescription was incorrect!  I felt that position was unreasonable and that Bard was unwilling to take responsibility for a defective product, particularly since I had already discussed this topic at length with the same store manager upon my initial visit.  So I stated that I would cancel the charge for the glasses on my credit card, picked up my glasses, and started to leave the store.

At this point things got really bizarre.  The store manger loudly stated that if I left the store with my glasses she would call the police to report a theft!  After I left the store, amazed at what had just happened, the store manger actually followed me out onto the sidewalk still yelling that she would be calling the police.  I calmly told her that since I had already paid for the glasses they were my property and that no theft had occurred.  At this point I was a bit concerned about my physical safety.

I had my prescription re-checked and found that it was indeed correct.  I also had the Bard glasses examined by my optometrist and was told that they were defective.  And lastly, I was also told by my optometrist that Bard commonly uses this tactic whenever a customer is unsatisfied with their new glasses.  After several months dealing with my credit card company the charge for the glasses was permanently reversed.

At the time I checked the local Better Business Bureau, and Bard Optical had an "F" rating.  Well deserved in my opinion....
