BEWARE!!! Eastern Eye Associates Inc. has relocated up the street from their previous location at York River Crossing.  Some people in Gloucester are mistaken and think this is a whole new eye doctor in our county.  But they aren't new.  Dr. Carter Murphy took over his fathers practice and sold it a few years ago to the Meadows. The husband and wife that now own and operate it.  Well if you were a patient of Dr. Murphy's you know that he didn't do business the way the Meadow's family does.

First of all they can not keep staff in their office very long. My daughter wears contacts and I go in about every 6 months for a refill.  There has been someone or several new employees every time I had gone in there over the past 3 years.  And the lack of quality of some of the employees is just unbelievable.  They have had a couple of very good employees that were professional and kind, needless to say they were gone even faster than the others.  The staff schedules appointment's, calls and confirms them, and then when you show up they look at you and say that you don't have an appointment that day.  If they ask the doctor if you can be fit in the doctor says NO!  The schedule is full!  Well, I took off work and made arrangements to be there when I was told.  But that doesn't count for anything.  Then the staff makes a comment that this happens often...and joke and say the computer ate the appointment.  I didn't feel like joking.

My mother went there and they billed her medical insurance not her vision insurance.  The doctor said anytime someone is over the age of 55 they can find some reason to file it medically.  Oh, this means the doctor gets more money for the same service.  And Mark Meadows is itching to do cataract surgery on every senior citizen at AVI where he works part time.  Which he really has a case of overconfidence.  My mother bought a new pair of glasses from them they were over $600.  We went back four times, because she couldn't see out of them. They told her over and over again that she needed to get used to them!  My mother has worn glasses for 40 years.  Finally she got so tired of not being able to see that she made an appointment with Dr. Wilcox's office.  At that time we found out that the prescription was totally wrong for her.  She was out of the cost of the lens, no line bi-focal, tint, scratch protection etc.  thank goodness we were able to use the frames.  When I called to try to get her money back, I was transferred from person to person and no one would answer my question.  I went in and all I got was an I'm so sorry you should have came in to us.  Excuse me, we did 4 times.

Let's not forget about the Refraction charge.  In addition to your co-pay when you check out your told about an additional $30 fee for a refraction that no-insurance will pay for.  I asked what a refraction was?  They said it is the actual part of the exam that gives the prescription.  Do what?  Shouldn't that be included in the exam?

Well, if you can get past the unprofessional, under trained, unorganized, over priced and egotistical doctors and staff at Eastern Eye Associates Inc.  Go for it. But for me and my family we will be going else where for our vision care.  I also reported them into my vision insurance.  Consider yourself warned.  BEWARE!

Do not go their took my daughter to Dr. Wilcox and the glasses she got from them have lasted 2 years and she is very hard on glasses .   Stay away from this place waist of time and money

Dr. Gemma Meadows is a rare gem...

AUTHOR: A very happy customer! - (United States of America)

POSTED: Tuesday, February 07, 2012

I had cateract surgery five years ago.  Thinking I was not going to need glasses any more, my vision began to deteriorate recently.  When I went to see Dr. Gemma Meadows, she was not only extremely patient but was able to dial in a perfect prescription for new glasses.  She also pointed out that I had a buildup of lens cells on my IOL lens and may want to have a yag laser done.  She mentioned that if I had the procedure done, she would recheck my eyes after the procedure to see if my prescription had changed.  I decided to wait on glasses until after I saw an opthamalogist regarding the yag laser.

I had the yag laser procedure done, she rechecked my eyes, and to my amazement, my vision had improved.   I am considering whether to have lasik on my left eye to correct the vision in it and during this time Dr. Meadows has never pressured me to purchase glasses from her but suggested an inexpensive magnifying pair as a temporary solution.

Prior to my cateract surgery, I had worn glasses since I was six years old.  I have seen many optometrists in that time and she is the first doctor I have seen that is extremely patient and understanding.  She will not stop until she gets it right!!  I highly recommend her as an optometrist.

Dr. meadows and her staff helped my Autisic Daughter

AUTHOR: Shanigirl - (United States of America)

POSTED: Wednesday, August 10, 2011

My three children have been patients of Dr. Meadows for several years now. She and her employees were the only office that would work with my then 2yr old daughter, who later was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
As with any business, there may be a high volume of turnover as folks leave one job for another, based on proximity to home, higher pay, and various other reasons. I do miss some of the first employees as I had bonded with them. However, everyone in the office, at every time I have ever been there has been both professional and personable to me and my children. They have gone out of their way to meet me at inoppurtune time, including some lunch hours, just so my Autistic daughter could avoid the stress of a crowded waiting room.
I have nothing but praise for Dr. Meadows and her team.

The complaint is wrong!

AUTHOR: Alex - (United States of America)

POSTED: Sunday, June 27, 2010

Mark and Gemma Medows are caring, competent and professional. Considering we live in an area with a lot of military, it is not uncommon to have staff turnover. As for cataract surgery, Dr Meadows is not a physician or surgeon. He is an optometrist who is more than qualified to prescribe glasses and fit contact lenses. He is also a very, very capable diagnostician. I have know Dr Meadows for for quite some time and find him to be nothing short of professional and caring. The writer has an agenda and it is apparent in their complaint. Her complaint about the refraction charge is inaccurate  and uninformed. Medicare and most private insurances DO NOT cover the refraction. It is deemed to be an uncovered service and has not ever been paid for by any insurance. As for "finding a diagnosis" the writer has no clue. All adults over age 40 have some degree of cataract formation and the risk of glaucoma goes up after age 40 as well. It has nothing to do with an insurance.
