We contracted with Empire Today for carpeting throughout our house.  Unfortunately, one of their installers "allegedly" stole my wife's wedding rings, plus another ring, a necklace & a pair of earrings - at least $7,000 worth of jewelry.  The installation took 3 days, and when he was here, this installer used our bathrooms without asking, and now I believe he was checking out the rooms to see where we kept something worth taking.  There is no doubt the items were stolen, my wife has a very clear memory of seeing her jewelry that morning and she always keeps it in the same place in a cabinet upstairs.

We have reported this crime to the police, and have some interesting information on the guy we believe is the thief.  He is an undocumented worker, here in the US illegally, and was recently deported - we believe it was for theft, but Empire is telling us it was for driving without a drivers license.  Either way, Empire must know he is not a trustworthy person, yet they brought him into our home and now refuse to take any responsiblity for his actions.  This guy is known at the pawn shops in his area, and 2 days after my wife's jewelry was stolen he pawned a wedding set and some other jewelry.  It isn't our jewelry, but it's interesting that he just happened to have someone else's jewelry, so I wonder where that came from?

The response we received from Tim Sherwin, the national Customer Service Manager for Empire Today, (after 6 days and numerous attempts to get a manager to call me back) is "maybe you will get lucky and they will turn up in the couch cushions".  Are you kidding??  So, he's saying on the exact same day that his installer is in our home, we happened to misplace 5 pieces of jewelry, all of which were in the same place in a cabinet upstairs, and somehow all of those items were taken downstairs and lost in the couch?  His installer is an illegal alien, who was deported just a few months ago, but is still allowed to come into our home under Empire's direction - but of course, Empire is not responsible for his actions, even though they know he is undocumented and has some kind of rap sheet?  Also, Joe Cartwright, the Loss Prevention Manager, will not even take our phone calls and we were informed he does not speak with customers.

The moral of my story is DO NOT use Empire Today for any flooring job, you may get ripped off and they will not take any responsibility for it.  Find a good, reputable company that will back up their claims of "licensed & bonded" with installers that are "experienced & dependable", instead of a company that hires undocumented workers to come into your home.  It ended up costing us over $7,000 more than we bargained for.

No response from Empire

AUTHOR: Joe - ()

POSTED: Saturday, January 11, 2014

It seems everytime I bring up the fact that Empire allowed an illegal worker into my home, I get no response.  No one from Empire has contacted me for over a week now, not even to let me know how the investigation is going.  I have to assume that Empire refuses to take any responsibility for the worker that they contracted with P&C to allow into my home.

Apparently, I need to take further steps to get any kind of response or satisfaction from Empire.  I intend to report to the BBB, the Labor Board and the local news organizations to shine a light on Empire's hiring practices and the complete lack of accountability shown by the organization so far.

Undocumented Worker

AUTHOR: Joe - ()

POSTED: Monday, January 06, 2014

Jeanette, I appreciate your response, however you have not addressed the fact that your company sent an undocumented worker into my home.  I feel very strongly that Empire Today should be taking responsibility for that, yet no one has even discussed it with me directly.  How is Empire planning to resolve this issue with me?
