@ Joemi....You cannot be a driver. As every driver that is well experienced in this field knows that Rand McNally was and still is "THE AUTHOR" of House Guide Miles or as you say "household mover miles".

This line proves you do not know what you are talking about:

No I do not work for Heartland O/O for the past 29 years. Can't stand those who are clueless in their statements.

This guy is being straight up.  I can tell by the words he uses and things he describes that he actually drove for them.

Heartland is not the top paying carrier.  They don't pay as much as the union trucking jobs.  Do Heartland drivers get paid to sit for all those hours in the inspection lanes? No.  Barr Nunn pays just as much as HE now.  And the company I drive for pays by the hub so I get paid for all miles that I drive, even when I bobtail to get something to eat.

And the home time does too suck.  A lot of times the drivers are under a load when they get to "stop by the house for some home made home time."  And if you are gone for more than 72 hours you have to clean out your truck for someone else to have and if you take off more than 2 weeks they terminate you and you have to hire back on and go through orientation again.

Even though I hate Heartland I will admit that their equipment is excellent, especially their trailers.

When did i realize it was time to leave HE?  When I was on their yard one day talking to another driver and as he walked away from me he could barely move his stiff body and he was only 50, but looked 70.  There's a lot of dudes like that at Heartland.  If you want to be a cripple by the time you are 50, work for HE.

Also,  in my opinion HE will throw you under the bus if you have a bad accident.  They won't bail you out and they will try to pin all the blame on you by getting up in court and admitting your negligence.   It's documented and you can find it if you google it.

And can somebody please explain why if HE consistently makes 50-70 million dollars profit every year and always seems to have several hundred million dollars in cash laying around then how come they can't put some curtains in their trucks so their drivers can enjoy some privacy?  Or how about some ice machines at your terminals?  Or how about some towels and a shower attendant to clean the showers?  Stop making the mechanics clean the toilets and showers and stop making the girl in the mail room be your urine specimen/drug tester.  Give your drivers the dignity of going to a clinic and having their drug test done by a third party.  You people are so cheap it's embarrassing for me to have to let the general public know how your employees are treated.  And could you please pay your  office staff and mechanics more than 9 dollars an hour?  They deserve a raise too.  Some of them are pretty good people.  I can't figure out why they want to stick with users like you though.  I guess the food stamps they get are helping them make it.

It should also be noted too that there are some drivers that seem to do better than others at Heartland, but that was also true of the inmates at Auschwitz, Dachau and Buchenwald.  People find a way to survive in unbearable situations.

I agree with one thing Joemi says: Find a Heartland driver at a fuel stop and ask them their opinion. Then talk to drivers with other companies and do the same. You may find an occasional angry Heartland driver if you look hard enough but you'll find many more angry drivers elsewhere. Heartland pays the best and has the newest equipment. 

Look, being a driver is tough. There is a lot of solitude and the requirements of the job embitter a lot of people. If you pay any attention to the statistics of this industry you know that, across the trucking industry as a whole, turnover averages around 75%. This means three out of four drivers leave during the course of a year. Heartland is at the top of the pay scale. If you don't like Heartland you're problem is with the requirements of being a driver and you should get out and find a desk job. 

Ask Heartland recruiters about the pay scale. As a system or "over the road" driver the pay ranges from 0.45 to 0.48 cents/mile with a four cent/mile bonus if you run on the far east coast. http://www.heartlandexpress.com/content.aspx?id=154

The part about the inverters is true. They aren't allowed. 

No bud... I drive for you people but not for much longer... If anyone has any doubts all you have to do is find a Heartland driver at a fuel stop and ask them about what I have said or better yet call the recruiting office. Ask by what method they are paid, what's home time like, can they have 12v inverters in the truck or any linears and ask about the idle policy.You could also just search the trucking forums but accoring to the Heartland representative of course anyone who has something bad to say must be a recruiter tarnishing their name.

 It's a perfect example of how they completely dismiss driver concerns. Oh but wait it gets better. They want you to bypass pretty much every toll road. Your going to be wasting your time in the North East taking back roads through small towns and if you do decide to take a toll road. They will take the toll out of your check.

I am currently a driver for heartland and although I haven't been forced to stay out 4 weeks it is true you don't pick your home time they do. It is also true you will only average 250-300 miles a day. Your weekly mileage will range between 1800-2100.

You are paid on household mover miles which is worse than randmcnally. My current variance from what I get paid to what I run is 13%. That means I will run 100k and 13K will be for free. The high mileage pay is not truthful.

If you have any 12v inverter or linear such as a 12v fridge in the truck they will fire you. But they will let you have the Road pro food heater which is just incredibly stupid. People put cans of soup in the heater, forget about it, and a few hours later hot soup will explode all over the driver and the cab.

You can't idle the truck if it's between 50-72 degrees. This wouldn't be a big deal but the problem is if you shut down at 9am when it's cool. You will wake up a few hours later sweating when it heats up. 

The main complaints I hear in the terminals are that drivers are largely ignored and dismissed.

Trying to get layover is like pulling teeth.

I have never been to prison but they probably have better shower facilities than this company.

You can be 25 miles from the house, have been out two weeks, and they won't let you go home until they say it's ok.

Heartland only hires experienced drivers with perfect driving records. You would think they would invest as much time with retention as they do with recruiting but they don't. 

I just wish that companies would understand as drivers we sacrifice time away from our families to promote their brand.

 Joining Heartland was a mistake.

First - Who I am:

I've been driving for three years. Before coming to Heartland, I drove for CR England and Schneider. I know the difference between a good and bad company. 

1)
I have NEVER, EVER had a week with Heartland less than 2,000 miles - ever.  My weeks usually average between 2,250 and 2,500 miles. 

2)
The miles that I run, I get paid for well.
At CR England I made .22 cents/mile.
At Schneider I made   .32 cents/mile.
At Heartland I earn    .45 cents/mile.

Saying that Heartland keeps drivers out for five weeks at a time is absurd. Heartland is not a training company. You must have a year of experience before they'll even look at you. What you're describing is the kind of games training companies play with drivers who don't know any better. This isn't that place. 

I've never had hometime that was less than 48 hours. 

Sometimes I even request my "hometime" to be in places other than home. Kind of like getting to travel and see the country for free! I just requested and spent the Memorial Day weekend in Cheyenne, Wy. So beautiful up there this time of year. Think I'll try to see Maine or Boston for my next weekend. 

Honestly though, I don't think you're a driver. I think you're some desk jockey from the competition trying to make yourself look better by tearing other people down. 

Look at the latest CSA score, see where Heartland ranks and you'll know why they resort to this crap.
