I agreed to join Sarah Ward's training/lesson program in August 2014; I left July 2015.  I had four rescue horses that needed to be sold.  I put them in her training program thinking they would sell in a couple of months. I had to give away two of them including one she said was a "money" horse.  A competent trainer later told me this horse had a club foot, turned knee and a capped hock.  It was agreed commission for selling the horses would be 10%.  She asked for 20% on the mare sold in February.  By late May, I was so desperate to sell the final one I offered one half the selling price.  Horse sold in two weeks - ten months to the day I started training.  Any time I brought up how I could no longer afford this, she would become angry and abusive.  She came unglued when I said I had found a buyer for Rose (not a rescue).

Sarah's training skills were inadequate. In addition to the rescue horses, I had other horses in her training program.  I have other trainers who can substantiate these horses received minimal training over the course of the year.  Her teaching ability was also lacking as she could not teach me to ride my own horse, Hilario. I was told I could not ride him because she had to "fix" something everytime I did.  As a result I didn't ride him for much of the ten months with her.  However, she was riding him as though he belonged to her, showing him and using him to enhance her reputation while charging me for his training, showing and other fees.  Now that I've moved away from her I'm riding him almost daily and making great progress.

I never seemed to get my money's worth in lessons.  I paid for each month in advance for myself and my adult daughter.  Sarah would cancel lessons stating they could always be made up.  This never happened.  She was unavailable Sundays and Mondays and she was unwilling to carry over make up lessons into the following month.

The checks I wrote to Sarah were in lump sums with no invoices or back up detail.  She included my vet bills in with the training and lessons.  I started asking for a break down and would simply be given a number by email.  I learned she had all my horses under her name at the clinic.

In the end, I believe Sarah's business practices were not above board.  I think she became greedy, evidenced by the length of time it took to sell horses, and her unprofessional responses to my financial predicament.  She has an anger problem in that she has a hard time keeping her temper when things don't go her way.  I came to dread my lessons with her as I became increasingly uncomfortable being in her presence.

The bad egg

AUTHOR: Sarah - (United States)

POSTED: Friday, April 20, 2018

In response to the slander Loretta Sprague has listed here and spoke about ever since this I thought maybe I should explain the entire story. But at the end of the day it's just too much to go though. I started my business based on a few key factors...to bring better business to the horse world, principles I apply in my daily life and to always always always put the horse first. Loretta was extremely duped by her previous trainer. These "rescue" horses were for them to profit extremely and were not what they were supposed to be. They were barely halter broke. So yea to train something that is 8, 9, 10 years old from halter broke to a nice horse

it took a little while. They weren't in full time training either. She's not a victim of anything here. Her horse she stated I wouldnt "let"her ride? She sold it after she left. The nice older show horse that I found for her that took her around at horseshows safely (keep in mind she is an older woman that rode a couple times a week)? It died when she left my barn. Loretta Sprague is no victim. She was given EXTENSIVE discounts and ran my life for what felt like a really long time. She would cancel lessons constantly or show up late and expect everything to stop for her. And yes I was closed on Sundays and Mondays. Thats my choice as a business

owner to make time for my family. Other clients began to complain and would schedule other days she wasn't scheduled. She couldn't follow rules, she couldnt act responsibly and had a number of pretty severe personal issues going on. We all as a team tried to be a friend to her. But at the end of the day I still have a business to run and I'm sure any real friend would understand that. It was causing myself and my business great stress. My reputation as an excellent riding instructor and horse trainer greatly outweighs what bad she has to say about me. I have horses and riders and longtime clientel that would prove otherwise. I'm not in this to be

rich. I'm in this for the horse and those that want to learn. Not the drama. I don't allow it. We are a family facility with lots of children and some of her actions and coherency were not condusive to that. I asked her to leave. When something begins to affect your entire business then it's time for everyone to move on. Her vet bills she still has not paid. She didn't pay on time. I constantly had to ask to be paid despite the discounts she was getting. She was sent breakdowns and invoices on everything. But she couldn't seem to keep things together. So her bills weren't being paid on time. A number of times clients would find her check books and

credit cards laying all over the barn. They would return them to her. It didn't matter what you did to help her it was never enough. She wanted more. I couldn't give her that. I did very well training her horses and placing them in to great homes that still today their owners send me updates. As far as the horses she brought to me and their issues or conformational defects...I didn't buy these horses. I didn't advise for her to buy these horses. She made those decisions. I was in no way apart of that. I was merely handed a mess she asked me to try to fix and I advocated for the horses to get the horses into good homes that gave them the best

chance at life. And thats what I did. She was upset she was taken advantage of by her previous trainer, which she sued and when enough was enough and she was asked to leave by myself, with the property management/owner in aggreance she was upset. As for her trainers since....I've learned anyone will say anything to gain more business and make money. Especially at the expense of a competitors business. Year's later she still has not ceased but to make myself and my clients the topic of discussion. There's so much in her complaint that really speaks for itself. I have an exceptional program that I am very proud of. And look forward to many years of continued business with our clients :)
