#4 UPDATE Employee
If recalled, call consumer safety commission

If this toy was recalled by the Federal Government, and you have the printout from the safety commission, Toys R Us has to take it back by LAW, whether it is used, no box, no receipt or what. While working here, I have been instructed that it is VERY serious not to take it back. Report the store, use the facts you have, time date etc.

With the Mattel recalls, stores are NOT allowed to take back merchandise that has been recalled. This reduces the risk of dangerous toys being put back on the shelves for sale by mistake. If it is a Mattel toy, you can call the recall hotline and be sent a pre-paid mailing label and all the instructions you need to return the toy. You will receive a refund for the retail price of the toy, and with no cost to you.

Consumer recalls

All companies and stores are notified of recalls so that the products can be removed from the shelf and returned to the manufacturer. Although the return was beyond the date when ToysRUs accepted returns, they were surely aware of any recalls. ToysRUs should have given the customer the appropriate information supplied by the company or at recalls.gov on how to return the dangerous toy and receive a refund. ToysRUs should have given appropriate and useful information to the consumer if for no other reason than maintaining good business practices and keeping a customer. On the practical side, the customer should go to recalls.gov. Choose the appropriate link to find the company and product involved. Also the websites of the specific company usually have links to their recall information.
This will provide the customer with instructions on how to return the toy to the company and receive the refund. Frequently, a phone call to the company with the UPC code is all that is needed since companies will instruct consumers to destroy the product, and then send a refund without the customer physically returning the product. This is information that ToysRUs should have given the customer as well since they originally sold the dangerous product. It is just bad business to not assist the customer after a company has taken their money.

This isn't a rip-off

That isnt a rip-off! If you were outside of the amount of days to return the product you need to talk to Mattel (Im guessing that the toy was a Mattel toy since your complaint was simply a rant and Mattel is the most current with a magnet issue). No retail outlet will take back a toy and give you a refund after their return policy has run out regardless of the problem. The toy is now your responsibility. Although it takes longer to return it that way, and is obviously not as easy for you, that is what you have to do. If you care about your child's safety then I dont see what the big deal is. If you are just after the $$$ that you didnt even spend, get over it.
