Jireh Construction and Building Maintenance – Steve Hewlett = Poor workmanship and Fraud! Pleasanton California

Steve Hewlett the owner and operator of Jireh Construction and Building Maintenance is a horrible contractor. My husband and I decided to add a 170 square footage addition by expanding one of our bedrooms to become a master bedroom and include a small bathroom. After having numerous conversations with Steve, we decided to contract with him based on him telling us he will have a full crew to perform the work and able to complete our job within 3 months.

The minute we signed the contract our nightmare began! When the work started, we found out pretty quickly that Steve is a one man show that hires labor from any means possible, even labor workers that have no experience. He brings anyone he can find into your home that have no idea how to do construction. He had people come into our home that refused to wear mask as required by the State/County and also used racist comments about Hispanic day laborers.

He lied on his contract that he had insurance to cover his workers but come to find out he has no liability insurance and no Workman’s Comp insurance. A 3-month job that Steve claimed he could complete, took over 12 months, in which he never completed and abandoned our job. We paid Steve almost the full contract cost and still have close to $30K of damages and unfinished work.

Steve ruined our brand-new tub, vanity, hardwood floors and the list goes on and on. He ruined the whole shower by his poor workmanship installing the tile and we had to rip everything out again to start all over. The pictures below will explain everything!

We reported Steve to the CSLB and the CLSB sent their investigator out. After a long investigation the CSLB agreed with everything we itemized about Steve not finishing our job and the damage he did to our home because of his poor workmanship and his unexperienced day laborers. The report is attached including the pictures of the damage and poor workmanship he did to our home.

Now the CSLB is going after Jireh Construction for poor workmanship, exceeding contractor amount and failure to secure Workman’s Comp for coverage of the laborer he brought into our home. They are also requiring Steve Hewlett to pay $5K in Civil Penalties. Attached is their report.  We are going after Steve’s bond, which we will only receive a max of $15K. We also now need to go after Steve in small claims court to try to obtain the rest of our money to repair the damage he did to our house.

Do not use Steve Hewlett, Jireh Construction and Building Maintenance!! He will con you into believing he is a stand-up skilled professional with his lies, take your money, provide you bad workmanship and never finish the job!! He will tell you lies about his family and claim is wife is always sick, just so he doesn’t have to show up to do any work.

He has no workers, so anyone he brings to your home could risk you as a homeowner if they get injured and they can sue you, since Steve has no insurance. Also, I want to bring to your attention that Jireh Construction license has been suspended numerous times, see below from CSLB site!!

Steve Hewlett and Jireh Construction terrorized us and left us with so many damages and unfinished work. My husband and I are still struggling emotionally and mentally from this. We find it very hard to trust people and bring people into our house.

I don’t wish this on anyone, and I hope if you are thinking of performing any improvements on your home to really know who you are hiring and check all their references, insurance, permits, bonds, etc. before proceeding to protect you and your house.
