My inspection was due and I brought my car in with the check engine light on. They did their initial review, and told me the axles should be changed. They said once the axles are changed, that should fix the problem and I should pass inspection. The problem was that it was going to cost $2,500 and my car is a 2006 Lexus GS.

Very expensive for a car this old. I paid them, and they did the work. The check engine light was no longer on. However, they said it wasn't passing inspection because of emissions. They told me to drive around for about 50 miles and bring it back. I drove it, and a couple of days later, the check engine light came back on. I brought it back to them, and they (1) insisted that the light was not on when I first brought it in and that (2) the check engine light has nothing to do with the axles. 

So they used the opportunity to get my money. Yes, the car needed axles but they didn't tell me what the problem was that was making the check engine light come on. If they had just cleared the code and told me that new axles were needed, I would have had time to get them done instead of the emergency they made it seem like. I was misled and now I'm out $2,500 (plus $500 for the rental car for the few days it took to get around) that I could have saved for.
