Here's another AC company not to use - Southern Coast Services. I saw them listed in the Palm Beach County Best Pics Book. One of 5 that many people voted on. These people don't know when they are getting ripped off. A few weeks ago in July 2023, my AC was not cooling below 82 during the hot afternoons. My AC is 6 years old. The tech came, told me that I had a cheap fan motor that was not supposed to be in there that would affect the cooling. I told him the motor was replaced by another company, Dr. HVAC in September 2022. After inspecting every part of my outside, inside of my unit, and my attic, this phony salesman shows me a list of all the things I needed. Total bill - $4,000. I looked at him like he was crazy. One of the things was a charge for $800 for freon. Another one was over $1,000 to seal my air ducts in the attic. I knew he was full of it and refused the work. He calls his boss to tell him I was not doing any of the work. The boss told him to charge me the service call for $89. Then this character tries to make me feel guilty for his hour and a half of work. I paid him the $89 and got rid of him. A half hour later, his boss calls me and tells me he will give me the freon for free, a $800 value, if I do the rest of the work for $ 3,200. I refused. Then he tells me that the electric on my water heater was not done to code and it's a hazard that can explode. He was now trying to send an electrician to give me a free estimate. I didn't want another person from his company in my house. Now I called some other companies to ask if $800 for freon was a fair price. Now I'm told that an honest AC company could not give me an exact price on freon, because they don't know exactly how much the unit will take until they do it and weigh their tank before and after. So to tell me it will be $800 was a high rip off price. The next day I had Island AC, a company that 2 people on here recommended. The tech came, agreed that I had an inferior fan motor, and needed a pound or two of freon, but he didn't know exactly until he put it in. After he put it in, it was 4 pounds. So the charge for 4 pounds of freon was $360, not the $800 Southern Coast Services wanted to charge me. Don't use that PBC book, get your recommendations from another site.  Don't use Southern Coast Services.

It can be normal for a unit to lose freon over the years without a leak.  I've had several technicains tell me that.
You like to go back and forth arguing to make your self look right, but you are not.  Your own peers have told me what a rip off you are.  You don't come up with $4,000 in charges to fix an AC, with $800 in freon when you don't know how much the system will take.  I'm not a AC technician, but I've recently been educated from an honest company, which you are not.  Save your bs for the rich ignorant people in Boca.  I should have known not to call a company based in Boca.  Contractors in Boca are notorious for ripping people off because they are used to doing it to all the rich people there.  $4,000 might be nothing for the people of Boca, but it's alot more to me, and not knowing anything about the problem at the time, I knew I smelled a rat with you.

If there is no leak, where did the 4 lbs of freon go? That's over half the charge in the system. The first company sounds like a scam, and the second one sounds incompetent. My point is when you fall for gimmicks like cheap service calls, you get s**t service. I can't imagine anyone competent doing a service call and proper diagnostic work for less than $150 or so. You get what you pay for, and $89 is not much in the HVAC world. And no I don't work for either company.

A leak test was done. There is no leak. You know what you did. I’m just calling you out on it. You had no right to come up with $4,000 in charges, and my company said you were a rip off quoting $800 for freon when you don’t know how much the system will take. Tell that BS to someone else who is not educated, You are one of the companies that make their technicians into high pressure salesmen.

You seem to be a master of picking ripoff companies. Here's a hint: honest companies don't do free estimates or cheap service calls. They also don't do gas and go, which is what you got. The only reason a unit might need freon is if it has a leak. I'm guessing this "repair" will last a month at most. The proper way to repair this would be to find the leak and fix it.
