Two years ago, on February 8, 2018, I called Auto Town Insurance for help getting a policy for a new car that I had purchased.  I called this company because I couldn't find anyone that would give me coverage because I had not owned a car in a few years and since I had used this company in the past. I thought I would use them again.

So, the person that I spoke with that evening said that after looking around for me Progressive was the only one that would cover me but it was going to cost me $1805 every six months because I had no prior coverage and my response was how could I have cover when I didn't own a car. Her reply was, I was supposed to have had some type of coverage that protects you when you don't own a car. I had never heard of that either (SR 22).

I was an Owner Operator,  Professional Truck Driver with an impeccable driving record and I had insurance on my truck but yet, I was charged this astronomically high price for my car. I went to the office on the ninth of February to sign the paperwork and an employee named Darcy C. printed out my policy. I signed the page for the Full Coverage,  so I thought and the page for the Uninsured/Under-Insured  Motorist.

I am not a native of Georgia and the State that I came from if you asked for full coverage you got it.  I didn't know that liability was not full coverage and I had no knowledge of Uninsured Motorist Reduced until after June 23, 2019, a young lady run the red light at an intersection a caused a three-car accident.

She didn't have enough coverage to take care of my car and the other vehicle so I had to file through my own and this is when I found out that I didn't have what I thought I had. And I renewed my policy every six months not making any changes because I truly that I had what I asked for.

Now, I am being asked why didn't I make changes but why would I when I thought I had been given Full Coverage and Uninsured /Under-Insured Motorist.

Uninsured Motorist Reduced law was signed by the Governor on May 14, 2008, it is called Senate Bill 276 and I believe that it is a total rip off to consumers. Why would anyone pay for coverage only to have it reduced?  Sonny Perdue was the Governor at this time and it's a scam.

When you ask for coverage companies are not explaining this. I have one of the State Senators working with me to try and get this removed. Also, I have a letter from Auto Town stating that their system is set up to automatically put an x in a box stating that you want this type of coverage but only at the customer's request. Well, I could not have requested it because I had never heard of it.

I want the Georgians to know about this and stand with me to make a change because what has happened to me shouldn't happen to anyone else ever.  And if ATI did this to me you know that there are others.

I believe what was done to me falls under the Federal Law of Uniform Deceptive Trade Practice Act and Georgia Law adheres to this and if not I know my civil rights have been violated because as an Insurance company all of this should have been explained.

And Senate Bill 276 states that a customer has to reject this Add- on in writing and I didn't do that.

Non-Owner Car Insurance Policy

AUTHOR: Barbara - (United States)

POSTED: Tuesday, June 09, 2020

I want to add some new information to my report. I was wrong about the SR-22 this is insurance for High-Risk drivers: such as DUI's.  I have learned the name of the type of insurance that Auto Town and Progressive were saying the I should have had. It is called Non-Owner Care Insurance Policy-provides liability coverage for drivers without cars. Google search states that a typical Non-Owner policy will include Bodily Injury Liability and Property Damage Liability, and some Insurance companies may also offer Medical Payments coverage and Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage. And, it doesn't say anything about Uninsured Motorist Reduced.

So, again how was I supposed to know about this if the agent didn't tell me? This type of coverage is not being conveyed to consumers when you ask for Uninsured Motorist.  It is so confusing because I just show where SR-22 and Non-Owner are hand and hand. When should I have nonowner car insurance? Non-owner car insurance is geared toward those who: Don’t own a car Need an SR-22 filing—learn about our SR22 insurance Don’t have regular access to a car Primarily take public transportation, yet occasionally drive as well
