The AAFES cafeteria in the building where I work is charging ridiculous amounts of money for their food.

When you order a ham and cheese omelet and request extra ham, they charge you .70 cents for (1) one piece of ham! Two slices of toast is also .70 cents, which is absolutely ridiculous considering that's about half the price of a full loaf of bread on the streets. A single chicken strip costs more than $1.50

Considering that AAFES is supposed to be comparing their prices to what the nearest civilian market is charging. I'd like to know where they are getting their price comparison from and how it is that the U.S. government is allowing these thief's to continually rip-off their soldiers, soldier's families, government workers and contractors?

Prices in Greely

AUTHOR: Anonymous - (United States of America)

POSTED: Wednesday, February 09, 2011

Dave, I agree with you that the prices listed here are not that incredible. Let me provide one I found more in line with what everyone is saying:

$10 for a double cheeseburger (yes, JUST the cheeseburger).

One cheeseburger is $2.10, but if you want a double, it's $10. When we complained to Connie, she told my husband, who was in uniform at the time, "If you don't like it you can go away and not come back". She goes on and on about how she is there for the soldiers, but says things like that in response to the prices. After that I sent an e-mail to the "correct" authority, and I received an e-mail stating he would take care of it, that no one should be treated that way. That was over 6 months ago...no change in policy, management, prices, attitude, etc.

Greely Hall Diner

AUTHOR: Pepper - (United States of America)

POSTED: Tuesday, December 14, 2010

To start off, I used to work at the Greely Hall Diner a few years ago.  It was completely unsanitary, and the management was extremely poor. The manager would often scream at us employees in front of customers.

I had called anyone and everyone I could think of to come and investigate the poor food handling and preparation.  I called OSHA, the MP Medics and numerous other resources. All of which told me that Aafes is virtually untouchable.

To go back to the prices, the manager, would increase prices on her own, without prior guidance from the Aafes HQ. And while doing the orders for the food there, I determined that the pricing gave Aafes and the Manager almost a 75% profit rate.

Since some of these posts, the prices have gotten even worse.

$1.00- 1 hard boiled egg
$2.50- French Fries
$3.00- Plain Hamburger
$2.50- Yoplait Yogurt Cup

Not to mention the steam table meals 7.25 for skimpy portions and a small drink?!?!?!

It's a Rip Off, a 100% and you should hear what is said by the manager, about the customers in the kitchen.

The new cooks though are amazing and incredibly tolerant to the abuse they endure day in and day out working there. They are strong and wonderful people and deserve to be treated well!

The Morning Crew

AUTHOR: John - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, August 06, 2009

I would just like to say that Hye (she's the one taking the orders, been there awhile) and Sherri (the one doing the cooking on the grill) are a great team. They make my breakfast experience a pleasure. Sure, I know it gets hectic and we as patrons expect our food, stat. And that's pretty much what we get. They see us regular customers walking into the diner and pretty much have our food prepared for us by the time we get there. That's what teamwork is all about. Cynthia, who doesn't work that much in the mornings, can't hold a candle to Hye and Sherri. She has a hard time keeping up with the toast orders, but she tries very hard. I just want to say, I told the cook and Hye, you are the best, you can't quit until I retire. I get a great breakfast, ordered the way I want it, with friendly chat from Hye and Sherri. They are the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Greely Hall Diner

AUTHOR: John - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, March 09, 2009

As a person who works in Greely Hall, I frequently go there for breakfast and lunch. I have been standing in line and have heard the manager, many times, berating an employee in the back of the kitchen, I was actually embarrassed for whomever she was hollering at, and she does this when she walks the food line, in front of customers. This in my opinion is very unprofessional, I am also sure that she also has a boss. So disgruntled people, you have a choice, if you don't appreciate hearing the embarrassing ruckus in the diner, I personally think the workers work very hard to service the people who work in Greely Hall, and the prices that go up every other day, be like me, I am gonna start packing my lunch.

Get Rid of the Manager

AUTHOR: Peyton - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, February 19, 2009

If you want to resolve your issues with the over pricing at Greely Hall, get rid of the manager. From what I hear, just hear say, see treats her employees badly, and can barely speak passable english. So what do you think the solution should be. Oh, that's right, AAFES doesn't fire anyone, maybe they should re-think they policy. AAFES is here to serve the Armed Forces and civilian employees, not the lady supervising Greely Hall, she should retire, because apparently she cannot run a dinning hall, and the fact that she treats her employees terribly in front of customers is ridiculous, they should all quit and make her run the show everyday, then we would see her fail.

I used to work at Greely

AUTHOR: Mekia - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, January 25, 2009

I worked as a janitor at Greely Hall. I had noticed that the prices were high compared to anywhere else on post and due to high volumes of people all having the same lunch time it is hard to go anywhere else and expect to make it back on time when the break is over. I suggest bringing a meal from home from now on. Sierra Vista is such a small town, there are too many people, and not enough businesses. I'm sorry to say, but bringing your own meals is your best option. I do agree that the price is reasonable, but only when you are willing to spend that amount of money. Over the months that I worked at Greely Hall they upped the prices on food and I wasn't making much per hour so homecooked meals were necessary.

Mismanagement tolerable when you're in a hurry

AUTHOR: Mark - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, November 28, 2008

The cafeteria is very poorly managed, and compared to other establishments in the area (other AAFES establishments on post) it is very expensive. Order fries and a drink with a hamburger and pay about $1.50 extra, order fries and drink with a tuna melt and pay almost $3.00 more... Please bear in mind that this is a relatively low cost of living area and the dinner does not advertise.

It manages to continue turning a profit because it's very convenient to the soldiers and civilians who work at Greely hall and it's overhead is very low. Many people will pay $6-9 for a hot lunch that is right there rather than drive somewhere else, even if it saves them $2-4 a day. I wind up using the Greely Dinner about once a week on average, if they ever get thier act together I might use it 3-4 times a week.

Greely Hall Diner Rip Off

AUTHOR: Don - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, December 28, 2007

I work on Ft Huachuca also and have noticed the prices are absurd. True .70 cents for toast may sound high but it is reasonable as the other people have pointed out. I would like to point out the other rip offs in the Greely Hall Diner. The manager arbitrarily makes up the prices as she goes along. I have noticed if you want extras on your food item such as an omlette or hamburger it will cost you 25 cents for a thin slice of tomato, 70 cents for onions, 70 cents for mushrooms, and 25 cents for lettuce!!! Now THAT is a true rip off. The prices keep going up and up while the number of customers continues to shrink. Personally I gave up eating full meals there many years ago and even today hesitate paying the price it costs for a drink. For less than the cost of a burger and fries alone you can have a full meal including drinks, salad, sides, and anything you want 3 blocks away at the Thunderbird Dining Facility which was opened to civilians a few years ago. While the Greely Hall Diner may be in your building it may be worth the short walk to the dining facility.

If you want a salad hold the chery tomatoes! Salads are charged by the ounce at a rate of 29 cents per ounce! A small salad will end up costing you $5 or $6 if you're not careful.

Oh I also forgot to mention the cost of a cold undercooked hardboiled egg at the Greely Diner is also 70 cents for a Medium egg! The manager nickel and dimes everybody to death, ice alone will cost you a dime if that's all you're getting. I'm sure she'll start charging for extra utensils and condiments later on as well.

The manager acts as though she owns the place with her price gouging. Let's also not forget to mention the quality of help she gets off the streets as well. A few of the workers are as nice and friendly as can be however the guy by the grill must have fallen from a stupid tree and been hit by every single branch coming down, he's as worthless as they come all he does is stand in the way of the busy worker bees and stare off into space.

I have absolutely nothing good to say about the Greely Diner. The food quality is terrible, a quarter of the staff is incompetent, and its being managed by the price n**i!

Someone mentioned the price of wages, advertisement, equipment, etc. The only cost is the employee wages, everything else has been paid for 100x over. the toasters are cheap $10 Sunbeams from Walmart that don't work, they have a large bread toaster that does nothing but take up space, and they never advertise.

pricing

AUTHOR: Harold - (Canada)

POSTED: Wednesday, December 12, 2007

like curt said, the cost of a food item isn't just the purchase price of the item by the reseller it is the cost of electricity, staff that (stocked, prepared, served and checked it at the register),price of equipment(purchases and maintenance) how much energy/wages it takes to wash the plate it is served on.(and if it was a paper plate, the recurring cost of purchasing the paper plates and the cost of disposal of all garbage generated).

(and that little bit of sour cream someone mentioned is factored into the budget),your thin little piece of ham had to be sliced(which is factored into wages or the extra cost of having it purchased and delivered pre-sliced).

the slices of toast (if it they were buttered, has the price of the butter factored into the budget and if the cook or waitress buttered it their wages are factored into it too).

i once worked in a high end restaurant and got a look at the cost sheet for the salad bar lol (they had it figured down to the last olive) (2 1/2 cents).

there are many more costs involved in running a food establishment that one would never think possible but at the end of the day the manager is responsible to the owner for every penny spent(and yes it is EVERY penny).

if we all could do the same cost analysis on our everyday living that a restaurant has to do just to break even, we would be surprised at how much we waste instead of complaining about paying 70 cents for two slices of toast when all you had to do was order it to make it appear lol.

look at it this way, you pay for the convenience of not having to make, transport or worry if someone is going to steal your meal/snack out of the lunchroom fridge at work lol.

that's my 2 1/2 cents lol

The cost of a piece of toast...

AUTHOR: Curt - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, October 03, 2007

... is a lot more than the cost of the piece of bread. The business has to pay for the toaster, gas/electricity for heating/cooking/refrigeration/lights, building, insurance, employees' wages, business license, etc. etc. ad nauseum. Seventy cents for two pieces of toast sounds pretty reasonable to me, as do all the other prices you've cited.

OP response to Dave

AUTHOR: Cagekicker - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, October 03, 2007

I am neither young nor am I blind to the prices of the restaurants around me. You're an idiot, making an assumption based off of absolutely nothing to indicate my age or my "opportunity to go pay for my own meals". Or is this one of those, "Oh, it's the internet. I can say whatever I want to and this guy can't do anything about it" acts? If that's what it is, stop wasting my time.

I kind of find it funny that right after I posted this, I went to lunch and one of the employee's at the cafeteria started telling me, (without provocation, I might add) that a lot of the employee's are tired of working there because the manager is only concerned with money, money, money and got on her case for giving a customer a small thing of sour cream for their meal and if it had gone on the meal instead of on the side there would have been nothing said.

I only gave you a few examples of why I submitted my complaint about them being a rip-off. You want some more?

Apple: 1.00
Donut: 1.00
The ham I spoke about, which is extremely thin: .70
There are plenty of other items that I could add, however, since I am *at work* and have things to do so that I can get paid and go out and pay for my own meals, (Ahem...Dave. That sentence is explicitly for you. Haha).
I am also not the only one to complain about it, I am just the only one to have found this website and posted something about it. So, don't shoot the messenger.

Wow, what planet are you from?

AUTHOR: Dave - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, October 02, 2007

Those prices are in line with ANY restaraunt in any state. You must be VERY young and have not had the opportunity to go out and pay for your own meals. .70 for toast is cheap, Denny's would be about 1 and half times higher.
