Their manager quoted me a particular price as an estimate of the cost to rebuild the manual transmission in my Honda Civic and replace the clutch. When they opened the transmission, the price to fix it doubled, but I would have to pay for the labor if I didn't want them to fix it. Left with no other convenient option, I agreed to pay $1843 so that I could continue making it to full time work and full time classes at school.

They took 6 days to fix the car, 3 more than they told me it would take. As soon as I got it back, I noticed several problems immediatly. The transmission often would grind while attempting to shift, and the clutch made a whirring noise, like a bad bearing, when it was engaged (after finishing the shift). Manager Dan told me to drop it off. They looked at it and said nothing was wrong.

I complained of problems again the next week, they changed the oil and told me nothing was wrong, but their service tech told me that the wrong oil had originally been put into my newly rebuilt tranny by another employee who was no longer working there. This would become a trend, every time there was a problem, they blamed it on a guy who was fired or quit.

After less than three weeks, I was on the freeway and found myself unable to shift out of fifth gear, the shifter was wobbly and no gears were available. I had to coast to a stop on the shoulder and fiddle with it for a few minutes until it "popped" back in and I could shift again. Later that week in a parking lot the transmission made a loud crunching noise and I skidded to a stop with the front wheels locked up. After waiting for several hours to be towed they took almost a week to tell me that the failure was due to my own "abusive" driving and I'd have to pay another $2000 to have my car back in working order. It took hours on the phone, several hundred dollars, and my trusty lawyer to convince them to reconsider. They finally admitted that they installed the clutch wrong and they were responsible for the break.

This time it took almost two weeks to fix my car, and I convinced them to allow me to rent a car under agreement that they would reimburse me for the rental fee. This turned out to be anothe one of their lies- get everything in writing from these crooks! They will not provide paperwork if you ask for it, in fact the manager literally yelled at me using profane language when I asked for an itemized report of each piece that was replaced or repaired during the original repair.

After this trouble, I couldn't believe that the transmission still didn't work right, I noticed it immediatly and turned around right after leaving the parking lot to complain, the owner talked to me and told me to bring it in next week. I did so, after experiencing two more episodes of not being able to shift out of fifth on the freeway (real scary when everyone is going 65 and you need to coast to a stop). Another thing to mention is that every time I got my car back, the alignment was off in a different way. First it pulled left, then right, then right way more, etc. each time they did major work on it. I had receipts for an alignment performed by Meineke next door to their shop a week before they did their first work, but they denied any responsibility and left me hanging on that problem too.

After bringing it in again, they told me they would have to put in a "new" transmission. I dropped the car off, and had to wait another 11 days before I could drive it again. These guys were delaying on purpose, all the while I'm paying for a rental car they promised they would pay for but in the end they refused to do that too.

The final repair was obviously not a new transmission but a rebuilt unit with black spray paint on it, but it seemed to work. Other big problems were immediatly apparent, though. The shifter was now a few inches off, meaning the neutral was now where 5th gear used to be. Every gear was a couple of inches further away from me, now in 5th gear I have to stretch out of the seat and the shift boot has since torn because of it. They claimed that I was imagining things when I complained about that one. The clutch never worked right, I eventually had to put in another one myself during summer vacation, now it works fine.

I recently discovered that they totally mangled my disk brake shields, the vent piece that goes on the hub just inward of the disk. Looks like they pounded them with a hammer for a long time.

They even lost the lock to my lugnuts, and blame the guy who doesn't work there anymore...

These guys will lie to you. They will yell profanities at you right in their office after you are polite with your concerns. The home office will call you back with your concerns but won't help out a bit. They will sabotage other parts of your car (alignment). They will delay repairs just to inconvenience you. They will blatantly not honor their warranty until you threaten legal action. They will screw you so bad that you will lose out on a lot of money, a lot of time, and a lot of piece of mind. I had a hell of a stressful 7 month nightmare with these jerks, and I had to walk away letting them win and paying for more repairs myself.

Don't ever consider doing business with AAMCO Transmissions!

Where have all the owners of aamco gone?

AUTHOR: getting even with aamco - (United States of America)

POSTED: Thursday, February 10, 2011

In response to the two other letters that complained about aamco. I was just curious why
all the bad owners are gone and you two new owners don't know anything about all the
complaints that your new business has before you buy in to this store/ You and twenty different
new owners  say that they were bad people and you new ones are going to do what is right
for the consumers. So your admitting that the previous owners did some bad stuff, but you
are the new name on the block and never would do that .What a complete joke! How stupid do
you think people are. I even talked to a judge that has handled many cases against aamco.
If everyone joins together there would no longer be people you take your car and turn it into
a piece of crap. I had always thought if your good to people they will be good back to you.
I had and im sure everyone else has always thought that the name aamco was someone
who has been around for years and would be the best place to take a car to get fixed. Well
That is not true anymore. Its really sad that there are people who don't care about other
people and how hard it is to get by without people ripping you off and distroying  your cars
and taking your hard earned money and not giving a crap about it at all. Very evil people.
If anyone wants to write back so we can get together to do something about this problem
please do so. Then somehow we can all talk. The more people the better the lawsuit!

Get even with Aamco

AUTHOR: getting even with aamco - (United States of America)

POSTED: Thursday, February 10, 2011

I read that you are from Beaverton Oregon. We are from Salem Oregon. We have went through simular headaches with Aamco . Our son took his nice acura suv in to aamco to get it checked because of one gear slipping just a little bit. We have went to hell and back with this problem, This aamco was in Shoreline Seattle, and Renton Seattle Wash. Back and forth  to aamco getting a problem fixed and coming back out of their shop with ten or fifteen new ones that they created. Actually put the wrong transmission in his car. His car is a 4 wheel drive and they put a two wheel drive transmission in it. No more four wheel drive!I wonder who has got his transmission in their car? I would really like to hear from you as we are getting people together for a law suit against this rip off company. Every time their excuse on the internet is that they just got a new owner and the bad guys are gone now. The new guy is suppose to fix the problem. We went to serve the owner of Renton aamco and guess what?  That owner dosn't own it anymore. He just gets shoved into another store when the problems get too much. The funny thing is that no one knows where he is or anything about him. Someone might have
dealt with him. Steve Hughes is the disappearing store owner. Isnt that a quincidence he disappears when he is getting served for court.? Aamco had to dole out 500.000 to 14 different states because of getting caught ripping off people all over the United States. They also hire  prisoners right out of jail. They supposibly train them in jail so when they get out they have jobs at aamco. The real joke is that they have access to all of our information, like personal credit cards, Id, ect. ect. Great huh? They also do the thing called bate and switch . They do this game all the time. Please write back on this web site, and we can get together to get them stopped. Too many hard working people don't deserve this.

Now the opposite is true

Ever since the current manager, Jeff, took over, this Aamco has earned an excellent reputation!

I am a friend of one of the Tech's there, Rhett, so I hear all the back stories and I can tell you that the current tech's and builders are fantastic! Jeff, the owner for the last good while is also the owner of 2 other Aamcos in the Portland\Vancouver area.

Jeff knows how to run a business well, is very intelligent, great at communicating clearly even to novices like myself, and goes the extra mile to make sure ALL of his shops are leaving customers satisfied.

I gotta talk up my buddy Rhett a little here, he knows his stuff. I'm not just talking ASE certified (if you can study and take a test, you can be that too), he has the knowledge that comes from working on cars for 16+ years. Shops around Vancouver and Portland will call him up when they can't figure something out, to which he can normally provide an answer off the top of his head that solves their 4 days of confusion. He can do everything from diagnostics to rewiring to aluminum welding.

As far as the guy who posted this complaint, obviously it's no longer relevant, but I will say that if you do have trani problems, there's no way to be 100% sure about an internal problem without taking it apart. There's a reason that trani builders make +50K and a good one, +70K. It's a very complicated component, even manuals. Also, this guy didn't even say what he was originally going in for besides a "rebuild". Often times shops will see other things wrong while doing what you came in for... if you'd rather just have the primary problem fixed, don't be surprised when the parts the recommended replacing break and cost you more money.

So with that, this Aamco and the one in Hazel Dell (I don't recall the third) will treat you right.

Complaint is on a previous ownership

AUTHOR: Aamco Tigard Or - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, September 11, 2008

This is a very odd, and horrific complaint. I am not completely sure what to say, except that an employee named Dan hasn't been here in sometime.

The franchise changed hands about 2.5 years ago, a manager by the name of David was here then and worked before sale of the buisness and around a year there after. After that Michael was the manager for about 8 months. Now myself Kevin the current manager, I have been here roughly 5 months. I myself didn't see a date for this complaint, but I do not see anything like this occuring at my location of AAMCO Transmissions here in Tigard Oregon.

Sincerely,
Kevin Smith
Center Manager
