We purchased our furniture at value city furniture in harrisburg. Just like most of the country we had to finance our furniture. We never knew there was a correlation to rent a center until we registered the account online. When we purchased the furniture we were told there was a special and the time to purchase was longer than the normal 90 days. When I called within the 90 days to find out the pay off balance we were told that whomever told us it was extended past the 90 days was false and that we only had about 8 days to pay off the balance. Since we weren't able to do that we just continued to pay 179 dollars since December. I called about 6 weeks ago amd was given a payoff balance of a little over 1100 dollars. I just called and actually spoke to the manager who stated that the payoff amount was almost 1600 dollars. The original amount financed was about 1500 dollars. So we paid around 1000 dollars so far and the amount went up. When I questioned her about it and asked if she could see who accessed my account to know who had given me the information she actually laughed and said oh they probably quit by now. How as a consumer can I protect myself from being scammed. I told her that I would be calling every month to get a balance and that I was very uneasy that the amount is going up not down. She was not able to give me any good answer but I can tell u I will not keep paying on a balance that it going up and not down. If I wanted to goto rent a center at least I would have an idea how long I would have to pay. I won't continue to pay blindly. I would like a print out of the payments that are due and see the amount owed decreasing. I will not make another payment until this is supplied to me. Don't not make the mistake of going to this company you be left paying and paying and havinhaving really no proof of what you actually owe the company.

You can only protect yourself by reading the contract before you sign it

Once you sign the contract, it is too late. You have to read the contract before you sign it to protect yourself. Calling to get a balance each month isn't going to help you because anything they tell you over the phone won't over ride the written contract you signed. This goes for any written contract - you can only over ride the terms you agreed to by signing an addendum. And in that case, all parties (borrower and lender) would have to sign the addendum to amend the contract. That is unlikely in the case of a furniture sale.

Check your remedies in the contract before you stop paying for anything. You don't want to shoot yourself in the foot. Find out the process first for determining your balance owed and go from there.
