I have designed T shirts for many many years and worked with many silk screeners and have never has as horrible an experience as I had with Ace Printwear!

Before I designed the shirt, I called and asked if they can print 4 color process T shirts, and was told YES! I also said, I have CS4, is that ok? Once again, the reply was YES.

I designed the shirt and submitted the art as an illustrator CS4 file, I think a .eps or pdf.. I said "I can send it however you want it, just let me know". They could not open it and had no idea why.. I asked what type of file to send and the man on the other end said "I don't know". I figured they may not have CS4 after all, so I saved it down to CS2, no luck. Version CS, no luck. I sent a jpeg... no luck. I was told they could recreate my art... I said "That is not an option" you should not have to do that! In every email (which it took them days to reply to) I emphasized that this was to be printed as 4 color process, not spot colors and I never specified any spot colors. Finally,I found out that they had Illustrator 8... (gosh, I guess the guy didn't know what CS4 meant, and didn't bother to ask me!) Illustrator 8 is 6 versions old.. time to upgrade guys! (he did actually say that they have CS2, but "didn't load it on the computer because it takes up too much space". (Who cares if it costs their customers days of endless phone calls and emails??) ...and by the way, how about educating your employees on what version you DO have.

This is not all... finally I got an email saying "your art is fine". Whew, they finally figured it out... a sigh of relief. Then I got a proof via email.. it looked good! It looked like my art, with the gradations and modeling that can only be achieved by using the 4 color process technique. I was again relieved!

A few weeks later, the shirts delivered. (I was hired by the company that ordered the shirts from them). My client who ordered the shirts showed them to me... ARGH! UGLY! THEY PRINTED THEM IN SPOT COLORS! (remember, I sent them process art and never specified spot colors!) And the colors were UGLY. Not only that, but my original design was on a slight angle and they straightened it!

I called the owner, Jeff Saxby and he started to yell at me right away.. he said I sent the wrong kind of art! I admit, we were both unprofessional by this time, but I was at the end of my rope! After he hung up on me, I forwarded the email (I have them all filed) to him in which he said "your art is fine". I even titled my artwork with the word "process" in it! Of course, he never replied.

Needless to say, I had no pull, since I was hired by the company that ordered the shirts from them and was not paying for them myself. My client had to send a check in order for the shirts to deliver. I told my client they should not pay, and that Ace should redo the shirts for free. Of course, the event that the shirt was for was in a week, and Ace claimed it could not be done. (obviously, they could have redone it if they cared about their reputation) What a racket.. send a bad shirt with no time to redo it in time for an event!

To add insult to injury, I did not even get a shirt (I did the event) because they didn't send enough shirts to my client!! ARGH!

I have designed the shirt for this particular event for the past 17 years! This is the second year my client used ACE.. (last year they messed up a spot job, and thats why I tried to do process this year, since I knew I could not go to the press check, since I am in another state). I did everything in my power to avoid problems, to no avail! I had so much stress and mental anguish over this, that I told my client that if they go with Ace again next year, i do not want to design the shirt.

They should be OUT of business!

AUTHOR: An unhappy customer - (U.S.A.)

I am the VERY unhappy customer doing a quick rebuttal.

What exactly IS Juvenile Art? I am a quite successful Graphic artist. The fact that you mad that comment shows your rudeness and Immaturity. I know that no matter what I say that you will call me a liar, because thats your personality.(read other bad reports on this company)

The Client I worked with has much lower quality standards than I do, I must say. You probably have problems with the "artists" because they know more about the process and how things should look and how they should be done than a customer that has your company do the design.. and blindly puts their trust in you. You cant "pull the wool over the eyes" of an artist as easily as you can with a customer that doesn't know much about silkscreening.

I did not and do not lie. I have no reason to.
After this mess, I did get ONE shirt printed at another place in 4 color process to see how it would look, and it looked GREAT!!! So, guess what, it would have been possible for you to do it the right way, if you cared enough and wanted to. I wonder if you even are capable of doing 4/c process? I could go on, but it would just be repeating what I said in my first report. I am done with this.

Still unhappy, and moving on to better things.... :^)

#2 UPDATE Employee

Completely False

AUTHOR: Standard Screenprinting - (U.S.A.)

After reading the report made by this "unhappy customer", I feel I must reply. The statements made are false. We are a screen printing company with 7 years experience under our belts. We print for roughly 3,000 events per year, and work with hundreds of artists. Until now, we've not had a problem like this one.

It's true that you asked about 4 color process in the beginning, which we agreed to. After haggling with your artwork files for weeks, you finally sent over something we could use. We do not use Illustrator programs, we use Corel Draw. You were also never told that CS4 was a compatable program for us. Our artist knows exactly what is compatable with our programs, which is why you were told that Illustrator 8 files would work fine, and that's what we ended up using once they were sent. Upon opening the files, they were already vectorized and separated into spot colors. All we did at that point was export the your file into a jpg, send it for approval, printed out the separations and went to production.

Furthermore, the artwork was juvenile. We create art that works perfectly for screen printing, and is easier on the eye, all at no charge to our customer. It's interesting that we didn't receive a call about this "problem" from our actual customer, but from the artist. The customer himself was pleased with the shirts. Issues like this only happen when we are dealing with an artist that creates something that will look great on a computer or a flyer, but won't necessarily work the best on a t-shirt. You really have to know the screen printing process to be able to create complex screen art. Which is precisely why we have artists here that can take care of everything at no charge. We've done two events for the actual customer since this incident took place. We've worked with a different artist that he employs and have had no problems. We've also offered to create the art for his t-shirts next year, to which he seemed happy to be able to save money.

Lastly, it's interesting to hear that the incorrect number of shirts was sent to the customer. Especially because this is the first we're hearing of it. It's interesting to us that the actual customer had no complaints, and the artist can't stop complaining. We listen to the one that makes and pays for the order. Please collect your thoughts before filing complaints. The only reason you complained last year was because we wouldn't print a shirt up and send it to you before printing the entire order. We don't do anything like that for someone that is not a customer. Just because you have a different idea in mind as to what kind of art works for screenprinting, doesn't necessarily make it so. We have 7 years experiences, and you'll only find two complaints against us. I'd say that's a pretty good record.
