Active Periodicals contacted me in late November to "validate" I wasn't receiving two charges on my credit card for the magazines I "already" had with them. They knew the magazines I was currently receiving from "Reader's Service" in Washington, PA and my credit card number.

They said they wanted to make sure no one else charged me because they are the ones providng my magazine service. "Remember we are your magazine service provider and we don't want you to be charged by another company because they are just trying to rip you off." What a joke they kept saying that to me during the call.

I kept repeating to them that I wanted to make sure they were the same company and that I had already paid over a year's worth of the two year agreement I had for the magazines I was getting. The individual said, yes, they knew I had already been a member for awhile and they just needed to confirm my information by having me answer some questions, etc.

They recorded my answers and I also made statements about "this does not mean I want to start a new two year period", that part was deleted from the recording. I made several statements on the recording and to the person who called me, but none of those are on the recording anylonger and of course it is my word against theirs now.

I received a letter that looked a lot like the one from "Reader's Service" in early December and didn't think much about it, but when I reviewed my credit card bill late December, it now had two charges for magazines I was already receiving. One from Reader's Service and one from Active Periodicals or ..Magazine something like that. Anyway, two charges on my credit card now where I originally had one.

Makes me wonder if Reader's Service in Washington PA is related to Active Periodicals in Deerfield Florida, since Active Periodicals had all the information before they contacted me the "validate" I was getting only one $49.98 charge per month.

When I contacted Active Periodicals on December 31st, they played the recording to me and said "you have had the account for 30 days", so you have to keep the contract. I told her I would not be paying anymore to their fraudulant company. I contacted my credit card company and they cancelled my credit card and are going to try to work on a dispute with the company.

I am also going to contact the Better Business Bureau to report this issue. I truly wish I had followed my gut instincts something was wrong when they called me. I should have hung up on them and I will hang up on any "magazine service" company in the future.

I've been through the same sort of thing

I have also been a victim of magazine companies. Your first mistake was getting involved with the first company. Likely, the two companies are related and you'll start getting duplicate magazines or additional different magazines. Your best bet would be to tell your credit card company that you did not authorize the second set of charges and file a fraud report. Also, close that card account and open a new one. Write a letter to the second company (their invoice probably looks just like the other company's except for different names, logos, etc.) and send it return receipt requested saying that you never agreed to pay them for magazines and that all charges they pursue are unauthorized and that you will not pay them any more money. Tell them that they are not to send you anything more or to contact you further. Be careful of other companies that call you about magazines. They'll sucker you into believing that they are the same company you currently deal with and you could end up like I was and paying something like eight companies for magazines I didn't want. These people are scam artists of the worst sort. The reason that the second company had your credit card number is that they are probably a sister company to the original one you gave your card number to.

Check out my rip off report about these bottom-feeders and what I did about it here: http://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/0/223/RipOff0223305.htm

Good luck.
