Dear Consumers,

I recieved microbraiding services from Adam and Eve African Hair Braiding (5722 York Road phone number 410-539-3099) on October 1, 2006. I arrived at their shop at 7 am and was asked what hair style I wanted. I informed the manager (Eve) that I wanted microbraids. There is no sign in the shop that states what services are available and how much each service costs however, I had previously called and spoken with Eve by telephone the previous Tuesday to set up the appointment and to find out the price of microbraiding which was $220.00. She (Eve) told me where to sit and the stylist began working on my hair. I remained seated for the duration of getting my hair done. About an hour into the braiding I was asked to pay in full for the service which I did. After paying I noticed that the mirrors in the shop are elevated above the clients head when they are seated so I was not able to see what the stylist was doing.

Around 3pm the stylist informed me that she was done and put my hair into a ponytail. I examined the front of the ponytail that was visible and was pleased. The stylist even asked me to take her home and I agreed. She asked me if I liked the hair and I told her yes I really did.

When I dropped her off I decided I was going to go to Towson Town Center to have my braids layered and I took my hair out of the ponytail. I began to run my fingers through my hair and realized that all the braids in the center of my head were only braided half an inch down. My hair was sticking out very shabbily and it looked horrible. There was no way I would be able to wear my hair down with this style. I also felt around the center of my head and the braids in the center (which are supposed to be braided closely hence the name 'microbraid') were spaced literally one finger width or more apart in comparison to the ones in the front which were braided very close together. The braids were also very large in comparison to the braids in the front (which were visible to my eye while at the braid shop).

I stopped at the nearest light and phoned the shop and told Eve that I was very displeased with my hair and wanted to come back. She told me that I could not come back and I would not be helped because the stylist was no longer there. She also informed me that to braid my hair completely into the braid was $260.00. I informed her that I was not aware of this. She said I watched the stylist do my hair I should have known what was going on. I told her that I did not see her as the mirrors are ABOVE the customers head when they are seated. I asked her why I was not aware of the price difference and she told me I should have asked. I asked her if someone else could assist me with fixing my hair. She told me no other people were being helped right then and it was a holiday in their culture and they wanted to get home to their children. I informed her that I lived hours away and this was the only free day I had. She told me if I wanted it done I could come on Tuesday and pay the difference. I told her that was not fair and being that I needed my hair fixed I would come the next Sunday (which is my only free day during the week). I called my husband and he told me to tell them that I would wait as long as possible to get the braids fixed today. I called back and she told me it was not possbile.

I than called the Adam and Eve Hair Braiding Shop on Belair Road. The manager there told me that her sister handled the complaints at the York Road Shop and she was busy. I came home and my husband photographed my hair (which I have pictures) and I asked my cousin to help braid the artifical hair down to my real hair so that I would be able to wear my hair to work. We were not able to seal the ends of the hair because we did not know how and the braids will probably unravel in the next day or two.

I am so appalled by there behavior, deception and lack of concern for the customer that I doubt if I go back. I would rather pay someone to complete my hair then give them anymore money. Please be excercise caution when looking for establishments to do your hair!!!! It might be a rip-off!!!!

A Battle of Words

AUTHOR: Kyrstin - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, October 03, 2006

Peter,

I do not intend to get into a battle of words with you. This is the last time that I am responding to any comments that you send in response to the posted message about the braid salon. We both know that nothing I say will be adequate enough for you.

1. I stated in the intial response that I spoke to the manager via phone the Tuesday prior to coming in on October 1, 2006. She informed me that the price for microbraiding was $220.00. That is the price that I paid on October 1 when I was asked to pay. I am not disputing the price as I stated in the rebuttal that I sent. The price was more than fair considering the service that I was recieving. I am disputing the quality of service. I am also disputing charging an additional $40.00 to complete a service that I was told was only $220.00.

2. I did not examine the hair closely because I did not believe that I needed to. And as I stated previously that is the mistake that I made. I believed that the service I paid for would be performed at 100%. I will regret that decision for a long time.

Peter, I am glad that you have taken such an interest in my misfortune. I hope that you have a terrific rest of the week!!!!

Skirting around the issue, are we?

Despite your long reply, you seem to have not answered any of the previously asked questions, particularly why did you not review and confirm the price and service before the stylist began work? And, why did you not take your hair out of the pony tail to examine the braids before concluding that you "really love it!"

My Response

AUTHOR: Kyrstin - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, October 02, 2006

When you recieve microbraids they last for 3-4 months. This is about how much an African American woman would pay for getting her hair done every two weeks (about $25-35 dollars) and between the fourth and sixth week most African American woman who keep their hair straight require a perm which costs between $45 to $65. Upkeep and maintenance on coarse hair is costly.

Also microbraids do require supplies. For example the human hair that gets braided into your hair. That hair alone costs $20.00 a pack. A typical woman will use between 4-5 packs of hair. Of course the stylist needs to be paid. So a portion of that money goes to the stylist who has worked on your hair for 8-9 hours. Another portion of that money has to go to the manager of the shop because they provide the stylist with the space in his/her shop.

At an African braiding salon they strictly braid. They do not cut the hair for you. They do not wash your hair. They strictly braid. When you leave the shop the hair in the ponytail is down to your shoulders. To me long hair like that does not appear natural. It is therefore necessary that if you want anything else done to your hair you have to go to another place to have something done with it. This very common among women with microbraids. I never made it to the other salon. A professional hair stylist can look at the length of the hair and the ends of the hair to know that know scissors ever touched the hair.

I do admit that I should have been smarter and examined the hair more closely. Unfortunately, I learned this the hard way. It should however not be okay for a business to be intentionally deceitful as I found that they were.

Thank you for your comments!!!

I do not understand ...

AUTHOR: Peter - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, October 02, 2006

I do not understand why someone would pay $220+ for a hair-do, and then leave without carefully examining it in a mirror. Looking at your new hair-do while pulled back in a pony-tail barely tells you anything about the quality or precision of the service you requested. Could you please explain your reasoning for this?

As for the debate over the price, isn't it customary to review and confirm the agreed-upon price and service upon first sitting in the stylist's chair? That's what most reasonable people would do, especially if there is no price list anywhere in the store.

Saying that you "really like it!" one minute and then complaining the next that it is "all wrong" sounds kind of fishy to the salon, who knows that you went somewhere else later on to get your braids "layered." You've got a lot to prove to the first salon, and not in the way of photographs as you cannot prove when and under what circumstances they were taken under.
