Moving Day: October 24, 2010

The owner -Jim -called me when the movers were supposed to be arriving at 9:30AM. He told me that there was going to be an 8 hour delay in my move, the movers wouldnt be arriving until 5:30pm. He was rude, cocky, arrogant and condescending, not in the least bit remorseful or apologetic. When I expressed my outrage, he told me, 'well there are plenty of movers, I'll just cancel your move and you can get someone else to do it'. I swear to God, he actually said that!! I told him we would wait. What other choice did I have at this point? Every single thing was packed and taped, all appliances and TVs packed, and I had to be out of the apartment that day. Both of my sons had taken the day off work. We had everything packed and ready to go, having been preparing since 5AM.

The truck showed up at 6pm, claiming to have an extra person, but the extra person never left the truck at either the pick up or the drop off location.  While I was talking with one mover, another one showed me the contract and told me to write .30 per pound on a line on the contract and initial it. When asked what for, he said, very quickly as he turned away from me, in the rare case of damages. Tired and pissed off, I did as he instructed without even thinking. My sons did most of the heavy lifting as the movers were tired and moving really slow. The movers had explained to me that they were assigned my move for 9:30AM, but were pulled from my move and put on a bigger paying job when those movers all called in sick. What should have been a 2 hour move turned into an ordeal that lasted until ten o'clock at night. I lost 8 hours of OT from a job I was supposed to start at 4pm. The 'extra guy' they sent as some sort of consolation never even left the truck - at either location.

When they brought in my $4000.00 white velour and wood couch, it had a three foot long line of MOTOR OIL across the back and huge gouges out of the wood trim. It is ruined.

When they brought in my $2000.00 pub table it was irreparably damaged with thick gouges across the table top and around the edges. The stools were also scratched and chipped.

These morons offered to send me a check for $60.00- $45 for ruining the couch and $15 for destroying my table. This is the amount of damage based on what the moron told me to write on the contract.  Now this is partially my fault for not thinking they would screw me more, but they refused to offer anything above and beyond the $60, even after filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau! I asked for compensation for the waste of 8 hours that I spent waiting for them to arrive, for lost wages for me and my sons and more money toward fixing or replacing my furniture. I received the $60.00 today, August 13, 2011 TEN MONTHS after the move!!!

Please tell me how a company like this is allowed to operate? I have seen numerous online reviews by people complaining about the same treatment. Why cant they be held accountable??

Not too great a rating

For a BBB member company to have only a B+ rating (http://www.bbb.org/chicago/business-reviews/movers/advanced-moving-and-storage-in-glendale-heights-il-37000155) pretty much is like a non member being an F. It means they have more than a fair share of unhappy customers, but respond just enough to keep that BBB sticker on their door and icon on their listing. You couldn't find a better rated company than this? For all anybody knows, maybe they were bought out recently by people looking to cash in quickly on their former reputation. Maybe the current generation owner has a different business plan than the one who started them 97 years ago. Why did you pick them? Why, why, why?

They Can Do It Because It's Legal

AUTHOR: Jim - (U.S.A.)

Not sure where you found these guys but there are a lot of legal legit moving companies you could have and should have contacted; there's even an agency in the state of Illinois that could have helped you avoid this company.

What can you do at this point?  Nothing.  You can't sue them because you signed the contract limiting the liability they pay when they screw up (note:  not "if"...when).  You would have been entitled to arbitration if they decided not to settle with you, but the difference would have been minimal; even if you didn't sign the $0.30 per pound liability, you would have received $0.60 per pound.  As I said, not much of a difference.  Why can't they be held accountable?  Because the law allows them to not be accountable.

Moving is not an inexpensive venture and trusting your valuable belongings to a mover based on price often results in this happening.  Next time, stay off the internet to find a mover and always research on the internet once you are close to selecting one.
