I purchased a Schult Home (Division of Clayton Homes. My 120 day reporting period is almost up. Both the retailer and plant where the home was built has been contacted numerous times, outlining over 200 items requiring attention: everything from frozen water lines due to not wrapping heat tape around water lines, ripping open the vapor barrier to access water lines and leaving them exposed, crooked cabinets, uneven walls and floors, a large gap in the marriage line (exceeding industry standards), misaligned doors, no keys for one of the doors, one of the worst paint jobs I have ever seen both inside and out, just to name a few.
The state office of manufactured housing has received the entire list of problems in writing at least twice, and NOTHING has been done. The factory doesn't care, nor does the state whose job is to protect the consumer. Their contractors stole mortar and lumber and used it to bury conduit, and shore up piers.
This company is so lazy, I still have the nails in the outside of the house from where they attached the transport lights. I was also charged 185.00 for a cleaning fee, and when I moved in, the place was absolutely filthy. The company is so incompetent, that I ordered an extra bank of drawers for the kitchen, and first, they didn't put them in and gave me a cupboard instead, then 6 months later, they ship the bank of drawers up, only it has NO DRAWERS! Then they had the gall to ask if I still wanted it.
I am not only writing the CEO in Maryville, but Warren Buffet who owns the company, the govenor of my state, the media, and am going to be posting signs in my front yard to advertise this issue. Additionally, I am preparing to sue them for the cleaning cost, plumber's bill to replace the water line and apply heat tape, stolen property and anything else I can recover.
If this company is receiving awards for "Manufactured Home Company" of the year, they are paying someone to get this, because from what I have seen, there is no way it could have been earned.

We have had many issues with the quality of our home which was built at CMH mfg. west. We are aware that we have bought a factory built home and not a high end custom site built home. However, we do expect the product to be as promised and to live up to the award winning quality they lie about.
Our issues are numerous and Sam Baird has gone out of his way to make getting any type of warranty work practically impossible. We even had the service manager bold faced lie to the state about our complaints. They do not want to complete warranty work because they cannot stand behind the quality of the product the made. Our money was good and given as promised, we should have been able to expect the same from their product!

Mary stick to your guns!! go for it! I'm dragging them thru court and on to trial here in mesa, they think that all their prospective buyers are just dumb a*s hillbillys and all their smooth sales pitches (lies) and it is true that they can lie misrepresent cheat and anything else that they can get away with they'll do it! and not be held responsible! Things went kinda weird withour situation so we backed out legally, but unfortunatley for us they tore up our property apart and removed the prior home and damaged it and left it on wheels left a horrible mess for us to clean up! the filed an illegal lein for 15,000.00 on our property! for what they called "improvements". I refuse to let them get away with this!! and from what i have been reading about clayton homes I'm absolutley disgusted with how they are destroying lives and getting away with it. And to think that warren Buffet is one the worlds richest men in the world! (makes you wonder how he got that way). hks, mesa az

in response to the complaint and the employee

First , I agree with the complaint about the homes being built with poor quality workmanship and materials. I have a Giles home that I purchased new and it is a piece of garbage. The company does not care and the manufacturerer does not care. Vanderbilt does not care all they want is your money.
Second, the employee is full of crap. You have every right to complain about the quality of the home. You are entitled to get what you pay for. The employee wants to make herself look good to VMF by her comments to you. But, I don't feel like you are being to picky when all you want is what you paid for.
Third, Get an attorney and file a civil suit to get the repairs done that the home needs. Also, Do not let Home First cover your home with their insurance. They will not ever cover a single claim you have. You will through away ever penny you give these people. They too are owned by VMF/Clayton.
Good Luck.

Happy FORMER Employee of CMH

I am an EX-employee of CMH and proud to say I have high enough morals and standards to say I quit my job as salesperson at one of their lots (called "housing consultant" within the company)
I quit because my manager demanded I use highly aggressive sales tactics and tricks to sell a home. When I refused to be less than absolutely honest and above board with my customers I was ridiculed and berated. EVERY time I did make a sale, after I had submitted the loan app's to Vanderbilt and finally gotten approval (which was nearly impossible even for an A rate credit customer!) my manager would insist on handling the deal from there. He changed the $ numbers on everything, tacked on ridiculous amounts of fee's, and fast talked the customers on closing day so they didn't even have a chance to realize it was happening.
There were SO MANY times I caught things like this, and when I questioned managment, was told that if I didn't like it the deal would go to someone else in the office! Needless to say, I didn't get many houses sold, and through the closing. I think my end total was 1....and it was a cash deal worked while managment was gone on vacation!
Don't deal with them, ever. Thanks for listening.

Customer complaints regarding Clayton Homes

As an employee of CMH, I have personal knowledge of the policies regarding customer satisfaction within this company. Each and every store, manager, sales person, and service provider employed by the company is responsible for Customer Satisfaction. It is the #1 priority regarding our customers and is given significant weight when considering compensation, bonuses, and awards provided by the company to the individuals listed above. We all take every complaint seriously.
Regarding this particular complaint, it may be that this buyer should not have purchased a manufactured home to begin with. She sounds as though she is trying to get a high-end, custom-built home for the price of a factory-built. I have seen this many times in my 10 years in the industry. Factory-built housing is designed to provide quality, design, performance, and energy efficiency for an economical price. That said, when you buy a Ford, don't expect a Mercedes Benz or a Rolls Royce. That's not what you paid for and it's not what you're getting.
Factory-built housing, in my opinion, is one of the best values available to consumers today, but that said, comsumers' expectations must be realistic. I cannot tell you how many times I have had to say to a prospective buyer, "I don't think I can help you because I don't think you will be satisfied with my product." If I see that a prospect's expections are so high that they are not realistic, I know I will have nothing but problems if I sell that person a home. And believe me, it's not worth it.
CMH has sold thousands and thousands of homes in its 41 year history. The vast majority of these buyers are satisfied and many are repeat and multiple buyers. It is not unusual to sell several homes to members of the same family. So when you're reading about these few unhappy buyers, think of all the hundreds of thousands who enjoy the dream of homeownership, thanks to CMH.
