My sister and I rented a car from Advantage-Rent-A-Car in Montreal Canada in mid July. We were given the option to waive insurance coverage if we already had insurance back home that extended to Canada, which I do, so we waived it.

A few weeks after our return home my sister's checking account was denited for almost twice the amount we were quoted for the rental causing checks to bounce. We inquired and found we were charged for insurance coverage. We disputed the charge with the bank and the money was credited back to the account.

Last month the account was debited, again, for the same outrageous amount and again more checks bounced. We have gone back and forth with the customer service manager, Namita Khatri, who refuses to credit us the difference.

Namita stated "Thank you for voicing your concern, however, after revising your contract I came to the conclusion that we will not be able to refund your account. In our office it is standard procedure to take a copy of the customer's policy if the customer does furnish it at the time of rental. This practice is a policy at our company. While reviewing your contract I noticed that there was no copy of your policy attached to the contract. I apologize for your inconvenience and thank you for choosing Advantage Rent-A-Car"

Who on God's earth walks around with a copy of their insurance POLICY in their back pocket!!! Give me a break!

First, they could not copy what we COULD NOT furnish on the spot because we were not told to take our policy with us when initial arrangements were made for the rental.

Second, Sharmaine, the representative that "helped" us, requested I fax her a copy of my policy as soon as I returned home. My insurance company faxed a copy of my policy to Sharmaine, per my request.

Next time we will just spend the extra couple of dollars per day and rent from a bigger company. We will still end up paying less!!!

Liability Insurance

AUTHOR: Rose - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, December 06, 2006

I don't understand why people get so uppity about having to prove that they have personal liability insurance when they opt to wave such coverage from a rental car company like Advantage.

Here in the state of Texas, we are required to not only carry a copy of our personal liability insurance in our vehicle(s), but we must also carry it with us in our wallets/purses in case we get pulled over driving someone else's vehicle - including rental vehicles - because it is OUR liability insurance that must pay for any damages to other vehiles caused by us, no matter whose vehicle we were driving at the time.

It is not currently Advantage's policy to bill you for liability insurance if proof of your own insurance is not attached to your contract - at least not here in Texas - so I don't know why this happened to you, but there ARE some people - a lot of them, actually - who DO carry their insurance in their back pocket at all times.
