Below is a letter I sent to AIU's attorneys. AIU has overcharged my tuition for one course and 1 week of attendance on the next course. I am currently paying monthly on the allege $6668 of student loan for the two courses. Plus, they wanted more.

Not only have I gotten a nasty letter from these attorneys, they were also making harrassing phone calls. I have since filed bankruptcy on the $892 because the attorneys would never have let up. I am now a student at the ----- where my loans are up there but you can see how the money is being applied. In addition, you can see how much they are charging per course. Furthermore, you were given the unsubsidized loans for your own expenses, such as money to buy your textbooks.

AIU includes your overpriced textbooks but AIU will not give you the unsubsidized money for incidental expenses such as new computers or whatever you need to be a mobile online student. Not only did I feel cheated, but I was told that I was playing the system. To me, AIU did not have to file unsubsidized loans on your behalf if they had no intentions of giving the money to you. They subsidized loan is supposed to take care of the tuition, not the unsubsidized loan. As far as I am concerned, AIU is an unethical educational institution and should lose their accreditation if the accrediting body or organization they belong to is not itself a farce.

Dear Sir:

This is in reference to your letter dated January 17, 2005. It states that I have a past due account with your client, American Intercontinental University online in the amount of $892.04. I would like to inform you that I only finished one course and dropped out of the program subsequently. Your client would actually be charging more for each course cost than what documentation I have regarding their charge per course because I am now paying loans (subsidized and unsubsidized) for the total amount of $6,668.00 for this purpose.

AIU should have refunded at least two thirds of that loan or for the amount over the cost of the one course. Instead, I am paying for courses I have not taken on a monthly basis. I have asked your client, AIU, to be fair. For this one course, I do not owe them any more money. In the education field, a student does not have to pay for a course never taken or dropped timely.

I have not overlooked this bill. I would, however, want to conclude this matter amiably. I don't know how and why they would charge me this extra tuition for courses not taken. I would like to see all documentation that I owe this bill. I can show you documentation of my monthly payments and AIU's charge per course.

Thank you.
