So my gas dryer had no heat on 6/5/2008 and I called Allen & Sons Appliance Repair in Canoga Park, California and was told they could come look at it for free and if I didn't want them to fix it, the charge would only be $29.99.

Here is the catch, if you decide not to have them fix it, they will not tell you what is wrong with your appliance. So needing my dryer repaired in a hurry I bent over and had them fix it.

Get this, I was charged, $192.89 including labor for a fuse and thermostat that I later looked up on the internet using the part number on the old parts the repairman left behind and the total cost with shipping for both parts combined was $24.

The repairman was here for 15 minutes, so that works out to a labor rate of $771.56 an hour! and get this, included in the $192.89 was a $6 surcharge I didn't catch when I paid the bill.

Do not trust these guys, they will rape you and put you in a position to choose between being charged $30 for them just walking in your door ($45 for certain appliances) and then force an outrageous fee on you if you have them fix your appliance.

I understand you are paying for their labor and knowlege but for parts that cost $24 and a repair that took less than 15 minutes from their arrival to departure, this is fraud.

You have been warned! Call someone else.

AUTHOR: Allen & Sons Appliance Repair Are Cheats - (U.S.A.)

Dear Julia Reyder,

Why would I address your office regarding my concern on my dryer repair? Is there some special , "I got screwed and I'm calling you out on it discount or refund"? You only took the time to research this complaint because I posted my review and you are afraid of the consequences of people knowing the truth about your services.

Yes, you are correct, I did tell your technician that I had Sears repair this unit but I DID NOT tell him they weren't able to properly fix, nor did I tell him that this was why I decideded to hire your company for repair. Sears DID fix my dryer by installing a fuse it merely blew again. Your technition said my new problem was another blown fuse and that I should replace the thermostat as well as a precaution and preventative measure. My review does not say that I was unhappy with the repair itself, I do not doubt that the fuse was blown again, nor do I doubt it was bad professional advice to replace the thermostat.

What I did complain about was the fee for 15 minutes of service, yes, that is right, 15 minutes tops. I already had the dryer pulled out and all he had to do was remove a small panel to get to the fuse and thermostat, Again, I stand by my time keeping of 15 minutes from arrival to departure.

In regards to the charges of $30 that I claimed, it is true. Your $29.99 service fee charge is to diagnose the problem and give a written estimate, which I WOULD HAVE HAD TO pay if I did not decide to get my dryer fixed, so yes, you charge $29.99 just to come to my house and "diagnose" my problem.

Again, you are missing my point, my complaint is not about a repair I did not want done, or a dispute of my authorizing the repair. It's about what I was charged. Of course the invoice has my clear signature stating that I agreed to the repair and the prices set forth by it, again, I needed it repaired that day. It does not mean I should have been charged $192 for 15 minutes of labor and parts worth half of what I paid.

Regarding the cost of parts, the Internet parts I looked up were from an authorized supplier.

Again, regarding 15 minutes for your repair, I don't need to "imagine" it being physically possible for the technicians to arrive at the house, diagnose the problem, write out the invoice, have me look at it and approve it, then go ahead with the repair by disassembling the unit, installing the parts, and putting the unit back together to test that it works, because that's EXACTLY what happened. Its a gas dryer, not a nuclear reactor. It was pulled out and as I said, has a small panel to access the fuse and thermostat.

The $5.99 surcharge I mentioned that you state relates to the cost of doing business is going up rapidly, well that's being felt by everyone and when your Company is getting $186 for 15 minutes of work, it's just a slap in your customer's face to add a $6 surcharge.

Again, I do not doubt or dispute that one of your most educated and experienced technicians came out on the same day as I called to do the repair. Nor did I say he misdiagnosed the problem or that I had additional wait time for parts to be ordered and arrive. My complaint is on the fee for the labor and parts I received and I stand by my rip off report.

Allen and Sons is deeply offended for being pointed out as doing a bad job when we did the job properly and efficiently.

Dear Mr. Thompson from the city of Calabasas, CA,

We would like to say how disappointed we are that you did not address our office regarding your concern on your dryer repair, we would love to have resolved an concerns before you had to address it on a place like ripoffreport.com. We have deeply searched this complaint and found the invoice that matched with it. We took the time to research this complaint because we are committed to excellent service and want to give all of our customers immediate attention.

Regarding your complaint, we wanted to address the issues you stated; first, you told our technician, some time ago, you had Sears repair this unit and they weren't able to properly fix it because you decided to hire our company for repair.

In regards to the charges of $30 that you claimed, it is not true. Our $29.99 service fee charge is not for the technician to come to your home, but rather to diagnose the problem and give a written estimate, but in your case, what clearly states in your invoice we waved this charge. So you did not pay.

If the customer is not happy with an estimate or has a question, they are always welcome to address the issue with our customer service representatives. Not one of our technicians will start any repair without customers approval. On this invoice we do have your clear signature stating that you agreed to the repair and the prices set forth by it.

Regarding the cost of parts, we acquire our parts only from the manufacturers authorized and recommended suppliers. As a professional company we cannot use Internet or other non-authorized suppliers. And we use manufacturer suggested retail prices (MSRP).

Regarding the 15 minutes for our repair, can you imagine it being physically possible for the technicians to arrive at the house, diagnose the problem, write out the invoice, have the customer look at it and approve it, then go ahead with the repair by disassembling the unit, installing the parts, and putting the unit back together to test that it works. Maybe time moves faster for you than it does for us.

Lastly, the $5.99 surcharge that you mentioned is because the cost of doing business is going up rapidly, that is why we do not increase the price of labor, because the time it takes to repair or diagnose the unit is the same. However, because of the increasing costs (which we hope is temporary), the surcharge is added to balance out the rest of the costs of being in business.

Do not forget that one of our most educated and experienced technicians came out on the same day as you called to do the repair. He diagnosed the problem and fixed it without the additional wait time for parts to be ordered and arrive. Along with repair, we also give a 5-year warranty for parts that he installed. Where else can you get such a fast response and quality service?

The bottom line is that we are deeply offended for being pointed out as doing a bad job when we did the job properly and efficiently, and didn't even have the opportunity to fix this problem with you ourselves and resolve the issue. There were no complaints filed on that day regarding such problems or issues, and no such complaint or problem has been found since then, reported by any customer.

Sincerely,
Customer Relations Management
Julia Reyder
