We purchased new bikes and the new Allen bike rack #104DB July 20, 2012. On August 5, 2012, upon our first use, the rack collapsed while we were driving on the highway.

The four bikes dropped down, scraped against each other, and became entangle. This caused a multitude of damage to all four new bikes and our car.

They all need to be repainted and tuned up, as frames are also bent. We were instructed by Allen Racks customer service to hold on to the rack and box until this claim is settled, then return the rack where they specify.

We requested several times that a representative come to the house to weigh our bikes.  Allen Racks refused and did not acknowledge this request.  If they had, it would prove that the rack failed.  They will not pay for our bikes, and said it was customer error. The company has done nothing to help.

We were very particular when researching bike racks as to which one would carry four bikes with a trunk mount (not a trailer hitch configuration)

We weighed our bikes prior to purchasing the racks and traveled with the seats and rack removed to further reduce the weight.

bike1: cliffhanger 34.2#

bike 2: cliffhanger 34.2#

bike 3: schwinn 34.2#

bike 4 ironhorse 34.8#

for a total combined bike weight of 137.4#

The total weight is under your 140# max weight recommendation.

We spoke to several stores seeking advice as to which brand and type to purchase based on the bikes that we have, and the Allen 104DB was the recommended trunk mount rack.  We were assured that the max weight of 140# would be more than adequate to haul the four bikes that we purchased.

If there were any question of that, we would have purchased something different.

Now, we are out four bikes, and have damage to our car as a result. The compnay did not stand behind it’s product as stated in their mission statement.

It has now been over two years and after repeated attempts, Allen sports and Allen Bikes has not responded further, nor compensated me for the loses due to their defective bike rack.

I have requested numerous times for Allen Sports to come weigh my bikes to proove the rack failed, still with no reply.

Allen sports produces inferior products and has substandard customer service.  They do not abide by their own mission statement.
