My friend and I went to get cellular phones at alltel. My friend was under my name. The representative said he would be under my name but it won't effect my phone if he didn't pay his bill. I made that perfectly clear or I wouldn't have done it.

The rep. told me it just saves him a background check. Anyway he didn't pay his bill and they shut my phone off (not his) mine. I payed my bill to the very end. He called alltel and made a payment arrangment. They turned mine back on. then he failed to make a payment and they turned both of ours off. I called them and explained I pay my bill fatefully, they apologized to me and explained they didn't no why my phone was turned off. well this happened alot over the term of the contract. Most of the time they would shut my phone off and not his. It was like they were punishing me because I payed my bill. It was close to the end of the cantract. They turned my phone off again, I got tired of all the argueing and explaining it wasn't me not paying my bill. So I left my phone off and went to another cellular phone company.

After almost a year I recieved a bill in the mail saying I owe 200.00 for breech of contract. NOW I ASK YOU HOW DID I BREECH THE COTRACT? FOR NOT CALLING THEM BACK UP TO BEG FOR WHAT I FATEFULLY PAYED FOR. I called them to explain to me they said I was payed in full I shouldn't have recieved it and to discard the letter. Well a year and a halve later I recieve a letter stating that I was turned over to a credit agency. I called the credit agency and they told me to call alltel, they needed something in writing. Alltel told me they don't put nothing like that in writing, but they will call them and straighten it out give them seven business days to here from them. It has been three weeks and it is still on my credit. I feel like I am a victum of misrepersentation. It has been almost 2 years and now they want to ruin my credit. I would rather pay an attorney a thousand dollars before i pay a nickel to alltel. I think this is about as low as a company can get.

I used to work for Alltel in the financial services department (long story as to why I no longer do, so I won't elaborate).

This is perfectly acceptable practice. If you have 2 accounts listed under your name and your friend is supposed to be paying the other one and does not, Alltel can and WILL shut off BOTH lines, even if yours has a zero balance. This is considered a related account.

Let's set up a hypothetical here. Account A (yours) is at 0.00. Account B (your friends) is at $150.00 and 45+ days late. Since Account A and B both are registered to your name/ssn, Account B's delinquency is considered a risk and to Alltel, Account A also has the POTENTIAL to be delinquent, therefore BOTH lines are shut off.

Having worked in that department, I would actually ACTIVELY look for related accounts and if one was seriously delinquent and the other had a zero balance, guess what? BOTH would be shut off if I couldn't get a payment on the delinquent account.

Hard Lesson

You have just had to learn a hard life lesson the hard WAY. I too have learned this lesson the same way. What you have done seems noble on the surface, but almost always leads to problems. If this friend asked you to put the phone in your name, there is a good chance he had not portrayed him self credit-worthy to other creditors, making him worry about whether alltel would provide him service, or provide the service with a very high deposit. You in theory Co-signed his debt. There is only one reason a creditor asks for a co-signer. They feel statistically, they will not get paid. It sounds like your friend proved them correct several times by not paying his bill on time. Companys have this credit approval down and can predict whether someone will pay fairly accurately.You should be extremely upset with your friend. I believe your anger, while just, is mis-directed. LESSON: NEVER, EVER, EVER, EVER CO-SIGN/GURANTEE ANY LOAN FOR ANYONE FOR ANY REASON UNLESS YOU ARE READY TO PAY IT YOUR SELF.

I am an Alltel employee in a retail environment. I am constantly asked if someone doesn't pay their bill that is in someone elses's name, will it affect them. That is common sense. Ofcourse it will.

No disrespect intended, but after reading your report, the question one should be asking is, "Why would you allow service for a friend, who is not responsible to begin with?" If they are a risk, and your good credit is on the line, why would you think to add them if it is a possibility that they wont pay their bill?????

It's not Alltel's fault....There's an old saying "With friends like that, Who need's enemies," In the end, sad but true, your friend's name isn't on the account, your name is. Which means any problems will have your name all over. Do you honestly think a big company has the resources or time to dissect every promise to pay, or lack of??????

Tell me something, are you still friends??????

Dont blame Alltel, just think twice before you are so generous to your friends.....
