I rented an RV from American Dream Vacations for the Memorial Weekend and left a $500.00 deposit against damages. I returned the RV on the Tuesday after Memorial Day and it was inspected and I was told that they would contact me with in 48hrs if any more damage was found. The next day I received a call from them informing me that damage was found on the RV. I went out to their location to inspect the alleged damage. They showed me a picture of the RV that was taken before we rented it. The picture was taken from a distance which allowed the entire side of the 31 foot RV to be visible in the picture. He then showed me a close-up picture (taken at a different angle and extremely close up) of what he claimed to me my alleged damage. The damage was so small that there was no way of telling if the damage existed before I rented the RV because they had no close-up pictures taken before I rented it. He then claimed that I scratched the side of the RV with tree branches and that two new decals would be required which cost around $400 - $600.00. I informed him that I did not drive near any trees as I rented it and drove it on all interstate highways to the beach to the designated RV pad which had no trees at all around it then back home. I also pointed out that opposite side of the RV had these same scratches. They claimed that these were done by the Owner of the RV.

They then requested that I sign a paper which resembled a repair order and was titled work required or something along those lines. I informed him that I would not sign a blank piece of paper authorizing work without knowing what the charges would be. I asked him to get estimates and fax or email me the paper and I would review it and then decide whether to sign it or not.

They never sent me that paper so I can only assume that they have decided to just keep the deposit. I then checked on the web for information on this business I discovered that they have an F rating with the local Better Business Bureau as well as complaints on other websites.

Based upon my experience with American Dream Vacations, their BBB rating, and complaints by others this appears to be business as usual for these people. This RV is also for sale and American Dream Vacations is also an RV retail seller under a different name. I am curious as to whether American Dream Vacations is the actual Owner of the RV and they are renting the unit and keeping the deposits by making up damage claims and using inadequate evidence to support their claims.

I did not damage this unit and their before and after pictures are of insufficient quality and are taken at different angles and distances and cannot prove whether the damage was preexisting before I rented the RV or occurred while the RV was in my possession.

Accidents Happen, but some people do not like paying

AUTHOR: jeffrey@americandreamvacations.net - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, December 12, 2010

We always provide appropriate evidence and never falsify it - never have, never will and I resent the alligations.  We have always been clear that photos are never the final stage in decision making, but a supplemental tool that may be used sometimes.  Many times pictures are not conclusive due to angles, lighting, etc. Who can predict where and at what angle damages are about to happen in the future?  No one on my staff!

Humans - rental agent and client - are the most reliable. The #1 most important step to any and all rentals is the walkthrough process prior to departure.  During this process all damages are written in a thorough manner side-by-side (rental agent and renter).  All damages are notated on the Check Out form and then the renter signs off when they feel like we have both written down everything that exists at that moment ... before departing.

There have been instances where a customer incurs damage to a unit and never realizes it until many mles later - heck I've done it.  RVs are large and tall pieces of equipment.  I've had people actually drive up on my lot with pieces of branches hanging from their RVs and scars all the way down the side and they swear up and down they were never even near any trees the entire time ... but yet there they are - the branches, the scars!  What else am I to surmise?

Bottom line is if the damages are not notated on the Check Out sheet but they are there upon return, then they ocurred while it was in the possession of the renter.  I ask again, what else am I to surmise?

By the way, we only have one name and we've never hidden from it.  In fact it is a matter of open and very public record: JNC RV, Inc., dba American Dream Vacations.  This is not a part of some clandestine secret society and right wing conspiracy to take over a mere damage deposit.  I am much more interested in having our customers come back and rent from us time and time and time again and tell all their friends about us and encourage them to do the same for decades to come.  That is how we make money for a lifetime instead of a few bucks in our pocket for a day.  We've been in business for a long time now and have had thousands of people through our doors who have had extremely positive experiences - some have even done damages and understand they must pay for it.  Some have come and gone several times without incident.

I cannot help a customer who hates acknowledging he did damage to one of our RVs.  He doesn't have to like it, he just has to pay for it and not ask me and my family to pay for it on his behalf.

If that is interpreted as being mean then please understand my perspective.  These RVs are owned by other people and we manage them for the owners.  If a renter does not pay for their own damages then my family gets to pay for their mistakes. I am contractually obligated to fix it for the owner regardless of whether or not the renter pays.

I promise I will never charge someone for what they did not do, but I also expect my family to not have to pay for another person's mistakes.  I have had to man up and admit I did damages to a unit when I rented it.  I cannot see why my customers cannot do the same.  Accidents happen and it sucks when it does.  I (like most of my like-minded customers) have just had to man up, pay for it and move on ... hopefully to never repeat our mistakes again.

I truly hope your next trip goes flawlessly and you have only happy memories to share with your family for a lifetime.
