This has been going on for 3 years now!
An item from U-BID, from which I had purchased and paid for before for several higher ticket items, was billed to my account erroneously. They charged for the item along with shipping costs. After my complaint, the item cost was removed but the shipping costs remained even though there was no proof of shipping in any manner (this was a TV after all)!!.
For the next almost 3 years the charges have been removed, reinstated, removed and finally stuck there. For almost 6 months now I have had non-stop collection calls that have gone from one company to another after all their attempts at collection were disavowed in the previous one.
The cost has gone from $496 for "shipping" to $2,600+ because even though I cancelled the card many months ago, they still send me a statement every month for a late charge and a finance fee that has escalated from around 9% finance charges originally to over 30%, - adding to around an extra $100/month.
If you, the consumer, adds in the cost of all the collection agencies used and now their latest - a "law" firm of sorts (an elevated collection agency), I would guess their (Amex's cost) of not handling this properly is about $6000 or so.
Is this really doing business?? Cheating you, the consumer and harrassing me, an innocent in this??

Did you authorize the company to bill your american express card? Yes. Did you dispute it? Yes. Did the dispute rule in your favor? Yes. Were you still responsible for the shipping? Yes. Did you agree to pay all reasonable collection and attorney fee's? Yes, by using the card.
So... do you owe that money? Yes

sadly,- how many years is this now?? 4 plus?? It is still on my report and therefore my score is affected and we all know how the SCORE is your life!!
we are starting to see how their arrogance (and now I would presume fear) has affected their way of doing business. They "assumed" that amex was above it all and could play God. Other mighty giants have fallen - it may be that this could be their future as well.
I have been told by some that I should just pay the darn thing because again, that magic FICO!!! I guess the principled part of me (it seems a very large part) just refuses to do that.
It is frustrating that with all these resources to communicate, it is still nigh impossible to get anything really accomplished.
I for now am satisfied that at least others can now see what was in the dark for so long
