I have never heard of either of these two places before.
Out of the blue they are telling me that I owe them $2,245.34 but if I pay by 08/28/05 I will only have to pay $1,122.67.

This is a settelment offer. No explanation of what it is for or when it was or how much the perchase was for.
This sounds like they are trying to rip me off.
How did they get my name and home address?
What to do?

Yes I agree with Natria, and agree to a point with Brad....well obviously the collection agency can give you details of the account such as the time frame, addresses, account numbers...and if you are remembering it it's not a scam..yes Brad I agree about what you said but you should verify last 4 of SSN if you're stating it's not yours....remember the company that sent to account over gave ALL the info about you (name, ph#, call back #, SSN, DOB, etc) so it's really plain dumb to play games such as saying "I'm not verifying anything (I imagine some people not verifying last 4 ssn or dob year...you really can't do anything with that anyway)"...then the collection agency just can note you are disputing but since you are refusing the fraudulent process it won't be deemed as fraud..no I don't work for collections, just a concerned citizen.

If you have never heard of the company or are positive you dont owe them anything. Then prehaps its a scam and someone is just trying to get your money or personal information. Do not ever give your social security drivers liscense or any other information over the phone. Today its so common for people to call and say they are with such and such company when in fact there not.

as an ex employee there is no contract between don and the agy the are trying to collect on a debt just give them a call give them your name thats it and they will tell you what the debt it for if not yours they will help you dispute it collectors have nothing to gain from you paying or not paying the bill they have already been paid your addy and other info was forwarded from the co that says you owe them and thats where the trouble lies as soon as your acct goes unpaid they open investegation retreving info on the ss#

you or a imposter of you provided and they sent notices then it goes into collections the 1,000 dollar decrease is called a settlement and you recive a ltr saying bal settled in full and your done if another agy tries to collect then you send them a copy of the settled in full letter they will leave you alone because collection agy protect your privacy they dont share info between companies so dont worry your safe in 90 it will be rmoved from your credit if it is reporting good luck!

don't pay anything until.....

I have worked in the finance business for 11 years and have the following advice for you:

- Do not send any money!!
- Request a copy of your "contract" from American General
- Request a copy of your credit report from all 3 major bureaus (Equifax, Experian, TransUnion)
- If the American General account shows on any of these reports, follow the instructions to dispute. The bureaus will do the leg work for you.

Good luck...
By the way your name and address, as well as, more personal information can be found from a variety of places (internet, unshreaded mail, etc.)
