On November 5th, I went to my neighborhood Arco station for a fill up as usual and became frustrated with the outide pay station not accepting my credit card for payment.  I had to go inside the store and wait in line.  When I asked for a fill up on pump #1, I was asked credit or debit, I said credit.  She said for credit, this side of the counter.

On the counter was a piece of cardboard that had a list of dollar amounts followed by fee charges.  I was told that I needed to pick a dollar amount which I guess meant that I couldn't just ask for a fill up.  I saw written on the cardboard 'Less then $25.00  Fee $ .50'  '$25.00 - $35.00  Fee $1.00' etc.  I told her that this is bs but I had no choice because I was out of gas so I did $24.50.

I have been going to the Arco station for years and the standard fee for using your card rather than cash was $ .45.  When I returned home, I looked Arco up on the internet and found that their advertisement read "GOOD-BYE $ .45 FEE - HELLO CREDIT CARDS"  It further states in the ad that Seattle area customers can pay however we want.  Cash one time, debit card the next or even use your credit if you want.

THERE ARE NO 'PARTICIPATING' Arco stations here and when I tryed calling the Arco Customer Service 1-800 #, I got the run around about their ad !   Later I found out from my roommate that he used the Arco station up near the North Gate Mall and 5th Ave N.E.  and he was charged $ .10 extra a gallon for gas using his credit card.  So he basically ended up paying a $2.50 fee !

A piece of cardboard with hand-written "FEES" to a consumer should be illegal because the consumer has NO idea if these fees are legit.  I understand that while banks are passing on higher fees to businesses and businesses are passing that cost onto the consumers - FALSE ADS like this is misleading consumers and is a total "rip-off".  This is what OCCUPY WALL STREET is all about and we as consumers of their products/services are fed up with all these fees.

PLEASE HELP !

What part do you people NOT get?  I posted Arco's ad that reads bigger than life "Good-Bye $ .45 Fee."   When you pay with your debit card there's no more $.45 fee* Pay with cash or debit card and it's the same price.   Does not say that they lowered their fee to $.35 so that's rip-off #1 and misleading consumers!

Their ad continues to read - "And if you think that's good, there's more!  You'll also have the option to pay by credit card........"   WTF does that mean?  You were always able to pay by a credit card if you wished to do so BUT the ad is not telling you that you're gonna pay a large fee for using your credit card as payment.  It's very misleading to make consumers THINK that there's no fee ALSO if you now use your credit card.  So rip-off #2 is that this Arco station is the only Arco station that I've come across that seemed to be limiting the $ amount you could purchase and increasing the fee pending your amount of purchase!  YES - the banks charge businesses a % per swipe BUT that % does not increase pending the amount of the purchase!  This Arco station seems to be charging whatever they want too for fees - SO YES - I feel that fees being charged to you NEED TO BE professionally displayed by the cooperation AND NOT written on a piece of cardboard just by anyone!  Also PLEASE keep in mind of WHO YOU are doing business with!  THINK ABOUT IT !

This is MY NEIGHBORHOOD gas station so why would you think that I should of just went somewhere else?  The whole reason for this post is to try and correct a problem and not run from it!  I use my debit/credit card for everything I purchase and rarely have cash on me.  That is my chose.  But if every business that I went to started charging me whatever they wanted for fees for using my card - then I would discard doing business that way.  Remember the reaction from people over the Bank of America fees?  SAMETHING PEOPLE!

Went to buy the last of the inexpensive gas last night before prices went up this morning. The one station that has good gas AND had it at $3.10 had the "pay at the pump" credit card slots covered OVER with tape. They would only accept payment inside at the cashier. Have a CC that rebates 5% off your monthly bill but ONLY if your "pay at the pump. I was "forced" to drive down the street and pay $3.11. I've started to see a number of stations display seperate prices for cash or credit, something that had disappeared for years. Thank Congress for the new banking laws. Those OWS people are a bunch of morons that don't have a f**king clue. Let them open a business. YOU could have just as easily gone to another station LIKE I DID and let your feet "do the walking" AS A CONSUMER. YOU chose to buy your gas there.

Where is the RipOff?

So basically you are complaining that you had to pay a extra $0.05 from what you are used to paying.  You must have really hit the roof when they increased their fee from $0.35 to $0.45.  If you really wanted to make a point why didn't you just get minimal gas to make it to the next station?

It further states in the ad that Seattle area customers can pay however we want.  Cash one time, debit card the next or even use your credit if you want.
- No where in that ad did I see where it said that Credit would be the same price as Debit/Cash.

and he was charged $ .10 extra a gallon for gas using his credit card.  So he basically ended up paying a $2.50 fee !
- Depending on how they want to word it several stations will give a discount for cash/charge more for credit, and $0.10 sounds about average.  It actually sounds like ARCO as a whole may have found that many people want to use their credit card so they are experimenting with that on a bigger scale.

A piece of cardboard with hand-written "FEES" to a consumer should be illegal because the consumer has NO idea if these fees are legit.
-
So you are saying that if they spent an extra few minutes to make it look more "professional" by typing it up on a computer and printing it out, it would automatically makes the fees legitimate?

They informed you of the fees up front. They didn't attempt to hide them from you. If you didn't want to pay them, you had the option of paying with cash or debit card. I don't see any false advertising on that picture, it doesn't claim that you will not be charged a fee for paying with credit cards. You do realize that businesses are charged for every single debit and credit card transaction they make right? They are simply passing these costs along to you.
